This is a re-edit from a previous upload. KZbin downgraded the picture quality for some reason lol. In any event, it was time for a revisit in the year 2025! The full 2 hour reaction is available here www.patreon.com/MrValentineReacts

One of the most powerful scenes in the film is when Derek asks his prison friend what he did. Derek got three years for killing two (?) people and he got six for stealing a TV. I think it's a very important moment for his character development, the realisation of the systematic inequalities of the American society
@PeacefulJoint15 сағат бұрын
They couldnt prove murder only manslaughter in court. His friend in prison wasnt charged for just theft, they charged him for assaulting an officer.

I come from Germany. I am often asked whether the swastika doesn't bother me. I say: No. It is his symbol. Whoever wants to misuse it for their own purposes will do so. what I personally learned from this film (apart from Edward Norton's brilliant performance)... Our fathers' prejudices should not become our children's mistakes.

Mr. V I always dig your insight and critiques on movies. You’re comment about that “ I’ll see you at Home” line is so spot on. Just that simple line meant so much and said so much in that moment without saying much. 😂 This is one of the those buckets list movies everyone should see. And don’t forget about Requiem for a dream. I guarantee you’ll love it.

Incredible movie. We watched this in high school. It does show the inequality that still exists today with sentencing. Murderers get out and do it again. Certain people who have many felonies get away with it while if I had two I would be in prison. But I don't have power or money to get my way out, I am an average citizen without that privilege. But I avoid that by not committing crimes like a normal adult. That dinner table scene has always stuck with me.
@markherron3897Күн бұрын
Edward Norton and the director had a dispute about the ending. Another cut has Derek go home, look in the mirror and shave his head repeating the cycle.

You’re absolutely 100% correct this could’ve been made YESTERDAY! I appreciated your thoughtful commentary. This movie was made *27* *years* *ago* and “they” are *STILL* saying the *EXACT* same things today! The same abhorrent discrimination & prejudices regarding race, ethnicity, immigrants, religion etc. It’s disgusting because how has the narrative NOT changed?! From their father lying regarding diversity, equity & inclusion, to Derrick on television & then when they’re inside the grocery store. How are we not more evolved?! It’s extremely disheartening. *Thank you for showing the clip of charlie kirk (aka the inflatable airline pilot in the movie *Airplane!)*

No it couldnt have been made yesterday, holywood is no longer capable of making great films, its just low grade trash no character development, no plot, no story, its just special effects. but it is truely relavent today as it was when it was made. But no it couldn't have been made yesterday

I'm 50, I'm white, I'm from Atlanta. I'm proud to say I've never seen or experienced racism like this. In fact, I'd say its more racist today than when I came up in the 80s, 90s. I feel for the youth of today.

In the original cut, after Danny dies, it fades to black and white again and Derek is shaving his head, alluding that he is going to back to the white supremacist gang. Obviously and rightfully so, they did not release is that way but it can be found on KZbin if you are interested.

Sad as it is, it makes a great deal of sense for that to happen. You can see after he reforms that the only thing he really cares about is his family and making things right with them. And then he loses the one family member that he has always had a deep and lifelong bond with to violence that's at least partially racially motivated. Yeah, that's a huge gut-punch.

After watching this I think u would truly love Coleman Hughes. He is one of my favorite young thinkers, writers, just brilliant!! His writing and point of view about race relations is great, pragmatic, and just real. He’s been on many shows, podcasts AND he has his own podcast and substack. I’m glad u got to watch this. It’s hard but as someone who was Derek’s age in the 90s it felt so real at the time…

****FYI, SPOILER IN COMMENT**** Love your channel man, and your thoughtful commentaries. I heard amazing things about this film for years and finally watched it a few years back. Edward Norton was absolutely chilling in this role and he did incredible (and was so perfectly jacked!) And while I generally dug this film, I found it rather schmaltzy, maybe even cringey, at how quickly Edward's character turned around and changed his outlook. I realize ya only have so much time for a character arc in a movie, but I just wasn't buying it here. It felt forced and abrupt; the manner in which he began to have his awakening. Plus, I think it's more realistic that despite maybe having made some personal changes, in the end, he very well may have held on to at least some of his hate. The complete 180 is a little hard to believe. But because it's a Hollywood movie, they had to adhere to a formula that was predictable and would be expected/desired by audiences. Along those lines, killing of Edward Furlong's character at the end was just lazy and dumb writing. It was all to make people emotional at the end of the film. It was extra drama where extra drama wasn't required. But of course they killed him off, because Hollywood LOL! Anyway, I really appreciate the things you say, man. You have a very calm energy about you and feel like an old soul. I look forward to more of your reactions.

I'm caucasian, and although the situation I'm in is in no way as extreme as this, I am watching my family become more and more right wing, and anti-immigration, etc... it worries me and I feel powerless to stop it because they listen more to their podcasts, their newspapers etc than anyone else... and as you point out, they have no actual connection to anyone other than caucasian people, so it is easy for them to dehumanise other people, because they dont even know them at all. It's all hypothetical

Hate builds upon itself and it is always a destructive force. His fathers hatreded cause the death of a son and imprison the other. Hate is always a destructive force, people feel strong and cool but it always brings you down. And even if you move on beyond hate you may find you already put too much of it out.
