I liked him right away. Maybe its because I'm socially awkward too so I was kind of translating his words through my own filter. It seems pretty clear that when he said "I'm here to try out for American Idol obviously" he didn't mean it with any malice, but was simply trying to make light of the fact that he didn't have some elaborate story as some contestants do. When socially awkward people get nervous, they tend to try to break the ice with witty or sarcastic remarks, but sometimes it goes wrong like that.

To me he has either an anxiety disorder or Aspergers or both. I showed this to my son (16) and the first thing he said was “He has autism.” He recognized his own. Me as a mom instantly recognized it when he kept talking about the waiting. They are in an auditorium, filled with hundreds of people. That must have been torture for his sensory input. Then when he said he thought he was showing confidence. Awe my heart broke. You can see he was genuinely confused and apologetic. That was genuine reactions. Ironically, my 16 y/o has been acting like this and then this video came up on my suggestions. I think what a lot of people don't realize about being socially awkward is that you can often come across as having a bad attitude.
