My teeth are not a good advert for British Dentistry as I've had only a very few good experiences (as a 12yo old, til that kind dentist - Mr Roberts - moved on to Private Practice and left the NHS Dental Surgery where I was then "_forced_" to go...!!) Later experiences _continued my abject fear of dentists / dentistry practices_ and eventually, after not attending _any_ for _literally_ decades... (And, following an 'ex'bf making me have a lot of my teeth extracted...) the ones I had left fell out one by one ...though I have one left, (for reasons best known to itself!!) 😟sorry folks to let the side down an' all that!! 🤔😐🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I think the criticism of British food being not great during the war is actually insulting to our grandparents who were struggling to provide food for their families while supplies were severely rationed - it's why we were encouraged to grow our own produce turning back (and probably front) gardens into allotments to make the rations go further 🥔🍅🌿

Traditional British (cask) beer is typically designed to be at its best when served at “cellar temperature” - around 12-13 degrees Celsius (about 55 degrees Fahrenheit). I prefer my beer from a wooden cask at the correct temperature to get the best flavours.

I think some Americans do find the food in the UK tastes "bland" because they are used to the high amounts of sugar, salt and artificial supplements that are added to food in the US. They are less used to natural flavours. I am sure you will notice it when you return to the US and go back to eating the food there, after having eaten UK produced food, how much sweeter and salty the food there is.

As a Brit. I say this is a very fair assessment. Filling a glass with ice is a good way of making you pay for less product. A very smart trick in America. I may be mistaken about this but I believe that the warm beer , bland food and absence ice were impressions carried by the huge numbers of US servicemen stationed there in UK during and after both WW1 and WW2 when it was no doubt a correct deduction . It could also account for the view that it always rains and possibly the unfriendly people as to be honest the Americans were often resented for joining so late in both wars . This on top of the fact that the British had endured years of rationing of food , clothes , fuel and other commodities and then they see Americans with unlimited supplies of the above as well as cigarettes , sweets ( candy ) especially chocolate and fresh fruit such as oranges and bananas which had not been seen in Britain for years.

@@tonys1636my mother's sister, my Auntie Myra, met and fell in love with a black GI who was stationed here during the war - my mum says he was a lovely man and often came for Sunday tea, bringing treats like chocolate and sweets with him. He was eventually sent to France, wrote regularly, survived the war and was shipped back to the States - Unfortunately, he wasn't allowed to marry my Auntie, by the military authorities, and was never allowed to come back to visit. My auntie was apparently heartbroken, and wanted to emigrate to the States to be with him, but it was against the law for them to marry in the USA because of race laws. It did eventually peter out, and she married my uncle - but I remember being so shocked about it when my mum told me the story.

It should be stored in the low teens, so a basement is good as that may be cool enough but not cold. If you don't have a basement then you will have to cool the room, certainly in summer or the beer will have a lot of secondary fermentation and oxidize quickly when tapped.

Traditional ales/beers in a pub = cellar temperature, which is usually cooler than room temperature. However, most people drink lagers which are usually chilled. Weather: I often see Americans from, for example, Arizona, saying how it rains much more than in the USA. The reality is that New York and Seattle get more rain than London. Food: we have at least the variety of food that the USA has, I think more.. The American concept of the UK having bad food goes back to US troops returning from the rationing during WW2. That's generations ago!

Thing is most of these misconceptions are based on 2nd world war realities, although the food was disgusting till the 70s at least but then we had realistic food due to the Common Market, then the EU later introduced the banning of all adatives that are bad for and still have in the US, example McDonald's fries... in the EU including the UK 2 ingredients in the US over 14 ingredients, so granted it tastes bland when Americans taste it as Americans are used to their food not tasting Natural as Euopeans taste fresh food you can actually taste, and US visitors after a few months eventually like our food..and yes I've been to the US and only went to Burger King who cook real meat and not McDonald's as nearly all their Meat products are reclaimed meat (basically scaping meat off the bones), oh and I had a philly cheese and steak sub from Subway, all of which I liked but they wouldn't be able to sell it in the UK now..lololol

It is not my experience that "most people drink lagers". If you qualified people with the adjective "young" you might be closer to the truth. At my three local village pubs the lowest on tap seller is lager. Yes, I have the luxury of a choice between three pubs all selling real ales. We tend to differentiate between beer and lager, the latter not even being considered to be beer.

That "Do you know the Royal Family" thing gave me some real fun when I was in the USA. Every time that I was asked if I knew The Queen my reply was always "Oh yes, she pops around to my house for Afternoon Tea on the first Thursday of every month. 4 o' clock sharp!" And they BELIEVED ME!!!!! 🤣 The food thing dates back to World War II when a lot of foreign military came over here. We were under extremely strict food rationing at the time and they just assumed that what we were eating then was our usual diet. Far from it. The food revolution here really got going in the 1960s and I would contend that we now have one of the best cuisines in the world. And definitely one of, if not THE, most diverse. 🙂 Thanks for the uploads. Keep 'em coming!!!

The rain is the price we pay for not being frozen from November to late March. The UK (and Ireland) are in the same latitude as Canada, Scandinavia and northern Russia. However the warm water from the Gulf stream prevents it from getting very cold in Winter. On the flip side, the warmer water tends to bring rainy weather more often than not. Well said Jess. Another great video with observations that are so true and well put. Just a couple of comments; I’m English, don’t drink tea, never have, and am now used to that ‘what a weirdo’ look when folk discover that. London, again spot on, it’s only part of England but most visitors never go out of it then say they’ve been to England. No you haven’t. Tied in with that is our reputation for unfriendliness which in London, I live in south London, is probably true but break through the reserve, yes it does exist, especially on the Tube, and you have firm friends for life. Did you notice when you came to London that there are two walking speeds here, one is the normal country-visitor speed and the other ‘London speed’, twice as fast even if you’re in no particular hurry which might also explain the unfriendly tag. As for the Tube, it can be a scary place at first so; learn your north, south, east, west directions, as the Tube doors open very quickly look up to the top of the wall for platform directions left or right for the exit you require then go to the wall, wait ten seconds for the crush to depart, get your bearings, quietly move off without being bashed around and muttered at. Many thanks to you and your family for living off base, embracing your community and enlightening the rest of us to a part of the country we may not know too much about. Great driving in your other videos too by the way although being in south London I do envy you your open roads.

I suppose a lot of these notions come from a long time back, and the two million American servicemen who passed through or were stationed in the UK during WW2 where food was rationed and even alcohol was in limited supply. After this, it took a while to recover and rebuild, with food rationing continuing for many years - meat still on ration until 1954, for example.

US food is full of . . . well I won't be rude but I have never warmed to any of it. Something worth mentioning IMHO is that the UK is 20 BILLION times LESS racist than the US ~ I don't thing diversity works here and never will no matter what the woke lot try to say or do to lessen the divide - and it is THE DIVIDE and DIVISION that (again IMHO) abounds in the US in just about every area that is very different to the welcomimng, decent, civilised and well-mannered people of the UK. There are some exceptions to every blanket statement of course, but I have travelled extensively and will still say that the UK is the most welcoming and wonderfully green and historic land in the entire world. As an Australian I would never drink beer that was warm...uggghhh.... because I'm used to Australian, Asian and European beer that is almost always Lager and must be served cold. I spent a few weeks in Britain and I had no problem whatsoever with real ale. It was cool, had minimal aeration and it tasted magnificent. I always wondered why Brits seemed to order pints because I thought it would be flat by the time you got to the bottom of the glass. It just doesn't matter. Cheers!

When I lived in New York, a work colleague who'd never visited the UK informed me that it rains in London literally every day, which is actually nonsense. I did have to explain to him that statistically NY gets TWICE London's rainfall each year! You're right about the perception that many Americans have about British people having bad teeth. I don't know where that idea comes from at all, but it's completely ridiculous.

Hey, Jess! I drink more coffee than I do tea, but I like both!! I prefer my ale at a little below room temperature, but prefer my lager/pilsner chilled. Some of these flase impressions originate, as others have suggested, from US servicemen returning from WW1/WW2. YOu're right in suggesting that our food is generally good. To be fair, I've not had a bad meal in the US when I've visited, apart from the 'bacon' that needed tungsten-carbide coated teeth to eat it or a hacksaw to cut it (you and Chris covered that in a previous video)! Having lived in the London area, I much prefer to live outside. I'm now 300+ miles north-east here on Tyneside. Yes some of there impressions are false, but it's how your compatriots perceive what they've been told. It's good of you to do your bit to dispel some of the myths surrounding this beautiful country.

Hi, Re Tea, I agree we don't all drink tea, but most Brits know how to make tea, and most will have tea at home, for visitors, even if they don't drink it themselves. Most will offer tea to visitors, this will normally imply coffee or cold drinks. Coffee is often/normally instant. Re Beer, traditional English beer is ale or cider, these were traditionally served at cellar temperature, so cool but not cold, both can be heated, 'tho this is now rare. The standard beer in much of Europe and the US is Lager, which is traditionally served cold. Most pubs serve all these and generally serve at the correct temperature for the brew. Re Food, is bland in England, well maybe some truth, we have far less sugar in food specially in bread, we also use less salt and less MSG (a food additive) generally considered addictive. We also don't tend to have Mexican Food. Our Asian foods are not bland, mainly Indian and Chinese, but many others. We also tend to restrict the use of artificial colouring and flavourings.

Where warm beer is concerned, it depends if it is cask ale or basic bitter! Cask ales are sold at a standard average temperature and not as cold as the lager cellars which are far colder. Btw, what region do you live in then as I live in Nottingham and we are roughly around 2 hours away from London. As for being friendly, the further North you get, the more friendly the welcome you receive in general. The further South, the less personable people tend to be and more solo minded and that is from my own direct experience after living in London for about 3 years when I was younger!

Hi Jess, Hope you are well? Well done on getting most of it right and setting the record straight. However, The weather always throws up a Hornets nest of theories lol, but to be honest, we, like America, have seasons that can change dramatically, with either the La Nina or El Nino effecting both countries and the rest of the world. Most of our weather patterns come from the Atlantic and Jet Stream sends us a huge difference in our weather patterns, if the Jet Stream is higher than the Uk then we will have scorching hot weather, if it sits below the UK we can be assured it will be colder, with occasional strong storms. Seeing as we get a large amount of our weather which has started off in the U.S. we can pretty much guarantee, if you guys over there have had some Hurricanes, or Blizzards, there is a good chance we will have some kind of knock on effect from it all, which i guess shifts the blame lolololol. But in all fairness we do get other weather factors too, what we call, The Beast From The East, usually from Eastern Europe (Russia Etc) is pretty much going to be very cold and Snow usually follows close behind. We do get some even better warm weather also come up from Southern Europe and The Sahara, which can also bring extreme heat to us. As for the Rain, well it is not always as bad as it has been lately for sure, this year has been exceptional, but on average we get around 120- 150 days rain a year, but not all parts of the uk receive that, so it is an unfair statistic, as we, down here in the South West, do get our fair share of rain, but, we also do get more than average of wonderful sunshine. Where i live to, we have our own weather pattern that doesn`t always follow Weather forecasts. It is just a great place to be really. The ice you mentioned, most do not have Ice in any beers, Ales in general should be drunk non chilled with a few exceptions. Lagers or Lite Beers would generally be Chilled anyways, and if you put ice in a beer you are throwing money away to the seller as you get less drink you already paid for and it Waters it down losing most of the original tastes. Keep up the good Work Jess, hope Chris and the Family are doing great too? Ciao . . . . Chris.

The beer we drink in UK pubs is almost always kept in and pumped up from unheated cellars so is cool but not so cold that it is tasteless. Taste is considered important here in the UK and we have loads of tasty beers. Many years ago refrigerated beers were tried out in our pubs but they were not a success. People would complain that the beer was so cold that it was rendered tasteless. I haven't come across refrigerated UK beers in decades. All mixers, sodas (and some bottled continental European beers) are kept in refrigerators behind the bar so ice is generally unnecessary. In many pubs and bars there are small ice buckets and tongs on the counter so that you can help yourself to ice if you want it.

There are so many different beers and styles of beer. Some were made to drink cold but most just "cool", and having them too cold destroys the flavour and you are left with frothy cold amber water (that makes you tipsy)

I have only just found you on Utube and have enjoyed your videos and opinions of many places we have visited, we have been regular visitors to the USA since 1988 when my wife and I met a couple in a pub in Banbury (same age as us with kids the same age as ours) they had just been posted to Lakenheath with the US Air Force and remain friends to this day. We invited them to stay with us in Yorkshire so we could show them some of the North of England, when they went home we were invited to visit them in Austin Tx. So we have seen both sides of this coin. Since then we have done many road trips and been welcomed every where we go but I have to say I prefer to the wide open spaces to any of the Cities. May this year we hit the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone ...fantastic. The USA is so varied from state to state and facinating but misconceptions exist, I was visiting the Stockyards In Fort Worth and for some reason had to go down late at night to the reception going back to my room in a small Lift (ok elevator) I was joined by a couple who were interested by my Yorkshire accent He asked me if I knew the Queen....... I replied no do you know Garth brooks to which he took great umbridge and I thought a fight was going to break out before we got to our floor.........That said you dont need to look far to find trouble here................. Thanks for your entertaining videos

With beer, it depends on the beer. Some beers like Lagers are best served chilled (fridge temperature), ales are best served at closer to room temperature but that’s still quite cool as it’s the pre-central heating room temperature, cellar temperature is probably closer to the truth. Not as warm as we keep rooms now but still warmer than the fridge.

Smelling the rain is an interesting one - I imagine that's petrichor. You only get that smell in the UK when it rains after a long dry spell, but it doesn't come in a wave ahead of the rain. I'd never considered in more arid climates the petrichor smell would travel ahead of the rain - I imagine that it needs quite heavy rain to fall on quite dry ground, like a thunderstorm would probably cause it

Traditional Ale is cask or barrel conditioned, hand pumped or gravity fed live beer and should be at room temperature or a little lower at cellar temperature. But when bottled or canned it s usually not live anymore and some prefer that version to be chilled, but not very cold as the flavour is lost.

The Prince had a quick word with everybody who was getting a medal and was charming. So I am now an Officer of the Order of the British Empire and entitled to put OBE after my name. Let's clear up this beer thing.... I believe it comes from the Real Ales that were served in small village pubs during the Second World War. East Anglia was turned into a massive aircraft carrier and thousands of Yanks flooded into an area that had very little modern infrastructure like mains electric, some villages weren't connected to the Grid until the early 1960s, so there was no refrigerated goods, only a cool cellar if you were lucky. This obviously isn't the case today, although it does depend on the type of thing you like to drink. Real Ale is generally cooled but not ice cold, Bitter tends to be less chilled than Lager, but none of it is served warm or at room temperature. There's apparently a difference in the way water is served in UK and USA, Americans always have iced water, but the UK is happy for it to just be chilled. I think climate is a lot to do with this, UK averages about 16°C so we don't need to cool drinks as much because it's not as hot - the whole of the main part of the USA is further south the most of the UK, so it's going to be hotter generally which is why the UK isn't so hot on having things as cold.
