Having seen how dry and dirty the good valve stem was, I would strip the lot and give I good clean up and valve seat grind. More work but at least I would be confident about the condition of that part of the engine. Good luck with your plan, looking forward to watching progress.

About 30 years ago I contacted what was then Associaed Engineering (the AE brand seen on big end shells etc.) as I was looking for a valve for my 1932 Sunbeam Model 9. They were extremely helpful and although they couldn't find an exact match sent several valves (including for a Rolls Royce engine!) FOC which could be modified to suit - which is what I did. AE are now part of the DRiV group and publish a very comprehensive looking valve catalogue which gives details of head and stem diameter and length. I had a quick search for a 40mm valve - of which there are many, but I suspect your biggest problem will be finding something 130mm or longer. A call to the helpline may take the pain out of searching the catalogue for all potentially modifiable valves. It is possible to have new heads welded onto the valve stem - it sounds a bit gimcrack, but I know it is done for classic BMW boxer valves - can't remember the name of the specialist now, but Motoworks would point you in the right direction if you wanted to research this route. For what it's worth, my approach would be to sort out the brocken valve and then get the thing running before doing anything else. Good luck.

General consensus seems to be rebuild it,I’m inclined to agree, the valve seat maybe beyond recutting in that position and with the head off you have more options,it looks a bit dry and crusty anyway and possibly other valves might be on the verge parting company, easy for me to say I’m not the one having to source rare parts, best of luck bud,at least with the net now it’s easier to find stuff if ya pocket is deep enough,👍

Another option, turn a replacement valve up, on your lathe. Although you still have the valve seat issue. From a cost, time, and tooling issue, I know you just want to hear the engine run. But you know, best practice would be a complete strip down of the engine etc, whatever you do, I look forward to it 👍

There's a good argument for running it on 11 cylinders to ascertain if there are other issues with the engine. As you say, it may have been unwittingly run on 11 cylinders without anyone noticing but removed for other reasons. Hope for the best, plan for the worst and all that..

Given its age, unknown history and condition you can’t really assume anything. It needs a full breakdown and inspection. A decoke valve grind top end rebuild a minimum. But then the bottom end really needs inspection too. Would have been nice though to see it run! Love your videos proper workshop engineering and humour - thank you.

All your choices have merits. Unless time and money are no object then a full rebuild but if it were mine I'd like to know how the engine sounds so would get it started and then decide. You may find some valve stems/ guides are very worn so you could need more valves. It would also be nice to hear if any of the ends, mains are noisy and that the oil pump and filter is doing it's job. Once you know this you can decide what to do. Whichever way, I'm sure it'll be another interesting video.

I don’t have any valves to fit it sorry. Since this motor is the inspiration for you building a car from scratch. My first thought is I’d put in a new / old valve fix the seat and see if she would run . I’d want to know I had a running engine before I done the work of building a car Then later in the build you can rebuild the motor after you have put it in and out of the frame multiple times like you have to do for a project like this . Getting a replacement valve may be a problem, but the valve seat itself may be more difficult. As the valve head has been banging around so much, the seat must be thoroughly hammered, and there doesn't appear to be a lot of material to work with. I'm sure that you'll find a way. I doubt that you would be satisfied with a motor running on 11 cylinders. Good luck and best wishes.

If it were me.....I would find a replacement valve, put it back together and try for a start. I faced the same dilemma earlier in the year with a 7 cylinder radial I bought - strip, inspect and re build or give it a whirl. Looking in the exhaust ports, the valves were in a shocking state, but having got the mags and booster coil working and cleaned out the carb, it was coaxed back in to life, clearing out 40+ years of oil and crud, and ran fine there after....

I would do a compression test first and take it from there it might also pay to remove that other head with the broke spark plug , Easier to remove it on the bench. I guess if you can get a standard exh valve you might need to get a exh insert machined to fit looks like its beaten that seat for a while. Looks like Eaton Valves still exist might be worth a call to them old stock or a lead to who had spares or part numbers.

Unless you're confident in sourcing parts I would repair as required and not worry too much if it's a bit smokey or not as powerful as a new one. It's not going into your daily driver is it? Exhaust gasket material is readily available as is sheet copper to make a head gasket if you can't clean up and anneal the original. The valve might have to be sourced from the colonies. Is there a Lafrance group or club you can reach out to? My experience of old tackle is that the old lads who have the bits hoarded are often not Internet users so word of mouth is often the way to go.

Giveb the nature and redundancy of the engine I suspect a fix of the valve is enough to get it running (or even an omission of the cylinder. If you are planning a concourse restoration then a full teardown, clean and valve replacement may be in order. Is there any risk of valve seat recession due to soft seats meant for leaded fuel?
