Sorry, I didn't know the use of five beads soroban. My granma told that this is for division.For example i have to memorize "ni-ichi -tensakuno -go" which means 2-1 equals 0.5.Anyway private junior-high here inflicts heavy math-task for entrance-exam.Pupils here learn util 4th grade the notion of minus and until 6th grade equation.That is why teachers here drive a nail into pupils' head.Almost all Japanese mothers support this way. Present minister of education is also a hard liner to level up.

I'm really bad at Japanese. So if you're an American Just asking him what because you can't read Japanese then I can tell you what he roughly said. But it could be that even to a native speaker His Grammer is off. So if you're Japanese please excuse me for trying to explain your own language to you ^^'> The first sentence is "Are these women/girls Japanese children?" Second sentence "something something understood the fast English something something" Again, if you speak Japanese better then me then please forgive me haha.

I'm not familiar with abacus but I think that's a quintuple, so if you add 3 to 3, you move a 5 bead and put back two 1's, one 5 and one 1, that's 6.

@hananokuni25808 жыл бұрын
Internalizing arithmetic operations makes it easier to do more complicated kinds of math, such as algebra and calculus. Most people outside the universities can get away perfectly with arithmetic and basic algebra. Being able to do these in one's head is a big plus, I think.
@JohnDoe-pt7ru8 жыл бұрын
Unless you're in a very specific career like accounting, not really. And even then, it would be foolish to depend only on your mental calculations when dealing with money, especially thousands or millions of dollars. As cool and impressive as it is, I think much of the soroban stuff is more like a parlor trick than anything very substantial or useful in life. Math-based careers will not rely solely on mental calculations to do work and if I were to invest my money somewhere, I'd be damned if they didn't double and triple check the numbers with calculators.
@hryank335 жыл бұрын
John Doe I think you can use mental math in any our days to days too, such as finding out how many hows you have till X task need to be completed. Checking if the cashier, or the bank representative make a mistake. It can be helpful.

Anybody in Japan don't know Suanpan Moreover we carefully checked not to import Chinese products. I pointed out that tool was not important but the notion of zero. At first we cleared up all beads to show zero.This type of tools exist all over the world.However we use this soroban for the first step of math education.I have never heard math education in China.Anyway your comment is nice and informative.However we used 5 beads soroban but did not use 1 bead..
@Kaepsele3372 жыл бұрын
This is pretty cool, but it's also pretty funny how the problems always seem to be in terms of "dollars". I'm a bit torn on whether it makes sense to teach the soroban in schools. On the one hand, it gives a very good understanding of numbers and a visual representation, better than just writing the numbers down as symbols and I think that can help a lot of students who struggle with abstract concepts. It can also train problemsolving using visualization which is useful beyond just arithmetic. On the other hand, I think that can also be a down side if the students rely too much on it and it might cause problems when they have to deal with concepts that cannot easily be visualized. It might be better in some cases to start using more abstract representations early on in education.

It is very mechanical. In China (PRC), in order to win this kind of competition, they have to recite multiplication table (one digit times two digits). e.g. 8 x 44 = 352 (read as 8、4、4 (with or without pause in between) 3、5、2) 8 x 45 = 360 (read as 8、4、5, 3、6、0) ..... and so forth They also group those with the same answer together to make life easier. e.g. 2 x 72 = 3 x 48 = 4 x 48 = 6 x 24 = 8 x 24 = 144 That's why statistics show that the GPA score of many Chinese students decline (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) when study in US . The higher the grade, the lower their GPA, because they are not educated to "think"/ "invent" / "create".
