So proud of our Eagles on that day! What an absolute classic!... They are a team worth putting on your list of teams to consider following. They were the first team from outside of Victoria to join the newly formed National League when it became the AFL. They have been a consistently strong club with one of the best win/loss records and highest consistent finals appearances in the league since their inception... all while consistently enduring one of the largest disadvantages in the national league, in having to travel further than any team in the AFL & 4 to 5 times further than any Victorian based team, over the space of a season... and incredible feat to remain as successful as they have over such a long period with with the immense travel load that they need to manage, flying from the opposite side of our very large country every second week. Keep up the solid education on our great game mate. Glad you love it as much as we do! Go West Coast!

You cannot be serious mate. You're 92 and 94 'flags' were off the back of the AFL gifting you the WA state side. It is common knowledge your '06' drug tainted and had the AFL any balls they would have stripped you of that title and is it any wonder most blokes from that side are dissolusioned with that abomination of a club. Far out how often does a premiership captain get out of Dodge five minutes after being handed the cup. But wait, I'm not finished. Along with being the highest recipient of free kicks in the competition (with many if those at critical times if games) as per the AFL charter to protect their love child Budgies. Then we have '18' when yet again the umpires chose to ignore the Maynard block in the dying minutes that resulted in a WC goal that sealed the game. Lastly the WC knew exactly what the travel implications would be when they got their licence so that poor Eagles with their travel commitments is a load of the proverbial. Freo travel just as much as you, however, have never heard one gripe from them. Lastly, I actually feel sorry for WC supporters as they have been brainwashed by a sycophantic WA media (channel 7, The West, The Sunday Times, PerthNow and 94.5 all of whom are major sponsors of the club), have become entitled to a ridiculous degree and only see the game through a very small lense.

Thanks for the shout out brother! It's a pleasure. You're more than getting it mate. You're pretty much there! This was a great game. It was a great example of how quickly momentum shifts in our game. 5 or 6 goal leads can get chewed up quickly. Collingwood are hated like the Yankees are. We all hate them, but their big rivals are Carlton, Essendon and Richmond. They've won 15 x Premierships - 3rd best (Carlton and Essendon have 16), but they've also lost 27 and drawn 2 (the next most losses is 14 by Essendon). Here's the deifintion of a mark from the Laws of Australian Football. That's right - Laws, not rules. Lol A Mark is taken if, in the opinion of the field Umpire, a Player catches or takes control of the football: (a) within the Playing Surface; (b) after it has been Kicked by another Player a distance of at least 15 metres; (c) and which has not touched the ground or been touched by another Player during the period from when the football was Kicked until it was caught or controlled by the Player. It's a mouthful. A Ruckman and Forward are 2 different positions, but almost all teams wil have a hybrid Ruckman/Forward. In this instance, Cox would start the game forward, and Brodie Grundy would play in the ruck (basically a tall midfielder). If Grundy were to leave the ground for a rest, Cox would go into the ruck. They'd also swap at times during the game for short intervals. They'll do this at times to keep Grundy on the ground, where he can get some rest whilst also maintaining that tall target. Timeouts - we don't have them in footy. The only breaks are between quarters. 6 minutes at quarter time and 3 quarter time, and 20 minutes at half time. The goal posts - if the ball hits either of the large goal posts, it's a behind and worth 1. If the ball hits the lower behind post from a kick that doesn't hit the ground, the ball is out of bounds on the full and the opposition gets a free kick from where it left the field. If the kick bounces, or is fumbled into the post, it's out of bounds and the umpire will throw the ball in to restart play. Keep up the great work champ!

LAWS?! Wow sounds pretty serious!! LMAO! Great breakdown of what a MARK truly is!! There is alot to it for sure!! I figured there weren't any timeouts as I never saw any during the 2022 or 2018 GFs! However, Im an avid NY Rangers fan and although they DO have timeouts in the NHL, you rarely see them called so thanks for clearing that up brother! Ok, so if the ball actually hits the goal posts its worth at least something! While in the NFL(as you know) the only thing that happens when the ball hits the goalposts is ZERO points and a rain of boos from the disgruntled crowd!! Lmao! The Ruckman/Forward positions were definitely confusing to me but after your explanation, I understand it better. I also feel the more I watch game replays and follow along with the game commentary, the game itself will become even clearer. Thanks as always for your support Clinton! #BasementMentality

@@johnnybasement430 Hey Johnny. No matter what happens the Jets winning that Super Bowl is the reason why there are "AFL" teams in the NFL. As you know I am a Ravens fan. I am also an AFC fan, even though the Pro Bowl sux. In Australian Football we used to have a thing called "State of Origin". They still have this in Rugby League. State of Origin was like an all-star game but with state pride on the line. The game of ice-hockey has rep games, Olympics and world championships. Soccer just had its World Cup, Rugby League and Rugby Union have theirs. Footy had State of Origin but it is not played anymore. The closest thing to it is the odd Victoria vs All Stars game. Please ask me if you would like to learn more about State of Origin football.

The Collingwood coach not winning and still being able to smile. This man has had a great football career. I cried and his son cried, but he was able to take it like a man. Always love watching your reactions John. I don’t think anyone has really told you about the laws of tackling yet. For a tackle to be legal you must get them between the shoulders and knees (no taking off heads, no tripping). These are different infringement types: Holding the Ball - If a player has had an opportunity to pass the ball off and don’t in time and in turn get tackled, the umpire (referee) will deem it Holding the Ball and a free kick will be awarded to the tackler. High tackle - If the tackler catches a player over the shoulder with a tackle, it will be deemed an illegal High tackle and the ball carrier will recieve a free kick Tripping/legging - If the tackler reaches in to try and trip the opponent, a free will be awarded to the ball carrier Push in the Back - If the tackler has been found to have driven the ball carrier into the ground from behind, into the back, the umpire will award push in the back to the ball carrier Sling tackle - If the tackler ‘slings the player’ to the ground, it will be deemed highly illegal and a free will be awarded to the ball carrier. This is to try and minimise serious head injuries. Incorrect disposal - If the ball carrier throws or drops the ball in the tackle (you must kick or handball) this will be deemed as incorrect disposal and the tackler will get the ball. Hope this clarifies the free kicks!

Yep , team loyalty , especially through the tough times , we understand that . My team (Lions) haven't had "ultimate" success in 20 years (well 18) but for some others it's waaay longer than that. The "Ladder" is the team standings throughout the year , Yes . At the end of the season proper , the top eight teams will play off in "The Finals" until there are only two . They play the ultimate game "The Grand Final" The "big dance" the "Granny". The Magpies (Collingwood) have many many haters , they are probably simutaneously the most hated and most loved team . You don't necessarily have to take a "clean" catch to be awarded the "Mark" It can't be touched by another player in flight or off the boot , it can however be touched by other players in the "Marking Competition" and it can be "juggled" . As long as it has travelled 15 metres through the air untouched and on the full and is then caught (FROM A KICK ), the catching player is awarded the "Mark" and has the OPTION of a free. Many times , more than one player at a time tries to Mark the same ball , sometimes you see two players mark the same ball at exactly the same time , the rule there is "Man in Front" The "Ruckman" is the guy who brings the ball to ground (or directs it his running players , the midfielders) at the "Bounces" (i.e. the restarts) or the boundary throw-ins (when the ball goes out of play) That's why it's advantageous to have a tall guy . A "Ruckman" is not the same as a Forward . A Forward has the job of kicking goals or directing the ball to a goal-kicker (assisting) Having said that , a tall guy down forward can be a good thing too so sometimes they'll put the Ruckman down in the forward line , Mason Cox did this a lot. But in general play they do two different things. Also , in this game , there are no rules about which player does what , so any player at any time can go anywhere he wants or where the coach may direct him to go. So sometimes we get "taggers" who are players whose sole job in a game is to try to "shut down" a star player from the other team. It's like double teaming a player for the whole game. No "time outs" none at all , there are the quarter time /half time / 3 qtr. time breaks , That's it. The Coach will send instruction through dedicated "runners" on the field but you CANNOT stop the clock . The guy wearing pink at 13:40 is a "Runner" sending instructions from the coach. If the ball hits the post (the big post) it counts as a "Behind" (one point) if the ball hit's the smaller outer post it counts as "out of bounds" (out of bounds on the full , an opposition player kicks it in , out of bound from a bouncing ball and the "Boundary Umpire" throws it in) A "Speccy" is whatever turns you on Brother , if it gave you a thrill you can call it a speccy (I personally like the term "screamer" but whatevs)
@johnnybasement430
@johnnybasement430 Жыл бұрын
Once again, you have educated me in a ton of well detailed explanations!! Your breakdowns of the differences btwn the Ruckman and a forward was extremely helpful cause I for sure was confused there! Also, the "Marking Competition" and what exactly the actual Mark can do once he catches the ball has me understanding that better as well!! Question: As you stated, When 2 players Mark the ball at the same time your "Man in front" is the one determined to have possession. Is this due to the player being in front towards the goal hes trying to score on? Lastly, I may now have to consider "Screamer" instead of "Speccy'! LMAO!!! Thanks as always for taking the time Mikey!! #BasementMentality
@mikeythehat6693
@mikeythehat6693 Жыл бұрын
@@johnnybasement430 Yeah "Man in Front" would be the player whose forward of the other player with regards to the direction of goal that his team is kicking towards (that's hard to explain in writing, growing up with it you just know, but having to spell it out is weird ) but I think you and I are saying the same thing. Also look , marking is a simple thing really , it's just a catch from a kick ...... that's it in a nutshell , there just happen to be all these technical rules around it because it can be heavily rewarded within the game but it's just a catch (from a kick (hahaha) that's travelled at least 15 metres untouched and on the full) . I like "screamer" because when players take high flying Marks , you can hear the girls in the crowd screaming . Whenever I hear that now it just confirms that it is the right term.

WEST COAST EAGLES. In case you're interested the 2005 - 2006 Grand Finals were bookends . West Coast vs Sydney both games separated by less than a goal . These 2 teams played about 7 times in a 2 year period where every game went down to the wire. If you hit the goal post it's 1 point if you hit the point post it's out of bounds.

Johnny, it’s only a mark when it travels at least 15 m after it’s been “kicked” by a player, NOT from a handball. The umpire blows his whistle for every mark or specky (even a specky is still called a mark as well) when a player takes a mark he can either play on, (if he does play on the umpire will call, “play on.) or he can stop on the spot and take an unimpeded kick. (Call it a free kick if you like, but it’s not officially called a free kick, it’s just automatic that he can stop on the spot to take his kick.) A goal is when the ball has not been touched by any part of the body by players of either team from the time it leaves the boot until it crosses the goal line. If anyone does touch it, it becomes one point. Ditto if it hits either of the goalposts. A ruckman like Mason Cox is a player that takes centre bounce hit outs, and boundary throw ins. Ruckmen will sometimes alternate by playing in the forward line. However Ruckmen and forwards are two different designated positions. WHY WHY have you not done what I told you to do? You can search online for books containing “ALL” the laws and rules of the game. If you read through one of those you will know EVERY RULE THERE IS. Cheers mate. (Thanks for the shout out.)

The bit with the soccer across the line (I don't think this was mentioned in the explanation), is that a goal has to come off the attacking sides boot. It it's come off the opponent, or if it's brushed a part of the body from any player on either side then it's a point. So it was clear that it crossed the line, the question was whether it had come off the West Coast players foot before the line, or whether it had been touched.

The first 20 minutes of the second quarter was best part the game imo (barring the last 5 mins of the game) such an arm wrestle, back and forth great defensive tackling. Many times very low scoring passages of play is far more enjoyable than constant scoring in games, unless the offensive skill is on point. Sometimes games are high scoring because the defense of both teams is subpar.

@@johnnybasement430 Games in the 80's and 90's were high scoring, 1989 Grand Final was 138 vs 144 for example. It was a brutal GF, there's a great documentary on youtube called "1989 AFL Grand Final Documentary" it's 48minutes long and I highly recommend watching it, lots of back story. Then either watch the full game or maybe react to the extended highlights. In 1990 the AFL became the AFL (previously known as the VFL) and then became a fully professional sport after having their first CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) which guaranteed all players are paid to play, many more players left their jobs and teams started full time training. Before 1990 Australian Football was pretty much amatuer or semi-professional at best. Players were becoming stronger and fitter, then came round 21 of Season 2000 which basically changed the game forever especially from 2001 season. Because the fitness levels were increasing, a team used a defensive flooding tactic to win against probably the most dominant team in a single season. There's a youtube channel called "Footy A2Z" and they have a little more detailed info on tactics and rules regarding Australian Football. A video called "Super Flood: The Night the AFL Changed Forever" will explain round 21 season 2000 in detail and they covered it fairly well, only 9minute video. Then I recommend 2 more videos relating to that most dominant team (Essendon Bombers (pronounced S-en-dn)) in 2000, no I'm not a Bombers supporter. "Essendon 2000 - Hard Hits (Part 1/2)" 8:15 long "Essendon 2000 - Hard Hits (Part 2/2)" 14:22 long These videos show the hardness, tenacity and pack mentality of the players, in particular a few key players that show up regular in the videos. They used intimidation tactics to a tee which is allowed in the game although it's softened down some these days. Enjoy :))

As a Geelong Cats fan who was live in attendance at the 2022 Grand Final I can say I’m a fan of it. At 7:10 yes the ball crossed the line but the question was did it hit the boot, just going over the line isn’t enough for it to be a goal, for it to be a goal it has to be kicked. if it is touched (not from the knee down) or not kicked it becomes a behind if it goes over the line. If a defender spoils (punches) the ball over the line it is a behind. It’s like a last ditch effort to stop a goal it’s a very common defensive act. West Coast and Collingwood didn’t really have a rivalry until after this match, there is a minor one now but they are on the opposite sides of the country to one another and they have a bigger rivalry with the club down the road the Carlton Blues. Yes everyone hates Collingwood, either you support them or you hate them no in between. With the free kick after a mark/catch (or any time one is awarded) the closest a player can go is where the free kick was given, they will stand there with there arms in the air yelling stuff to throw them off, they are pretty much in a 10x10 protected box they get to kick or play on in. Players who aren’t taking shots on goals get 8 seconds before they are warned with a whistle then forced to play on and then they can be charged at and if they are taking a shot at goals they get 30 seconds. A mark is awarded when the ball has gone over 15 meters off of a kick and hasn’t been touched or obstructed by anyone else until you cleanly control the footy (ball). I’m going to try and explain the positions as easy as possible Defenders: They play directly on Forwards to stop them from scoring by out marking them, spoiling (punching) the ball and, tackling Midfielders: Mids go everywhere on the field, they are hard running high stamina players who need to be able to play defensively and be able to switch to an offensively mindset in a dime whenever there is a turn over. Midfielders are thought to be the best players in the game. Ruckman: Rucks normally play two positions because they can’t just follow the ball all day. When a player gets tackled and can’t get rid of it and they didn’t have time to a basketball style jump ball happens and the Ruckman are the players who do the jump ball, they are almost always the tallest players on the field. Forwards: This ones pretty obvious, make space, mark and score, obviously they need to know basic defence if a they turn it over in there forward half. Mason Cox is more of a forward, he doesn’t ruck much because he gets out muscled by other ruckman during the ball up (jump ball) 13:30 There is no time outs, the runner who delivers messages from the coach got in the way of play, runners a people specifically for running messages. they changed the rules with runners recently and they are only allowed to run a message after a goal and the ball is on its way back to the centre so they don’t get in the way of play. The AFL made a rule that between a goal and the next ball up they will give 30 seconds for people to come off and on the bench, get back to position, and the runners run a messages. minor heads up you are mispronouncing premiership, I can’t really say how to pronounce it in a comment but just a heads up. 15:50 if it hits the two big goal post it’s a behind, if it hits the outer lower post on the full without it being obstructed it is a free kick against the person who kicked it, if it is obstructed or handballed in the the post a boundary umpire with throw the ball in for the two ruckman (again like a jump ball) 18:00 yes that’s a specky, which stands for spectacular mark. 20:00 yes you nailed the scoring! hell yeah!

Ite called a mark because the place someone catches it marks the point where the opposition cant encroach on, while the free kick is taken . The defending player stands on the mark (usually with his hands in the air) and the player with the free kick, has to kick over the mark, unless they play on

Next season for the first time, there will be 4 field umpires, (currently there are 3). Unlike NFL, there are NO challenges, no yellow flags and no evictions for striking or targeting. Any severe indiscretions are dealt with a couple of days later by the AFL tribunal, where penalties of suspension are dished out. Why you should join the Magpie Army: Huge passionate following. Draw the biggest crowds on most occasions. We love being hated. A rich storied 127 year history. It's never boring being a Collingwood supporter, triumphs are sometimes followed by traumatic failure, but nonetheless, we stick. Not like others, who desert when things get tough and jump back on when the going is good. There is only one TEAM, John, and that's Collingwood.

When a player marks the ball, i.e. catches the ball, can either go back unimpeded and take his kick or if he can choose to play on quickly. If he plays on he must be backward of the point where he took the mark. If he doesn't play on from where he took the mark, the umpire will get him to stop and take the mark from the spot where he first took the mark.

Yes, Collingwood is the team everyone hates and the biggest rivalry is probably Collingwood/Carlton although there are plenty of others. Carlton have been down for a couple of decades but it doesn't stop the rivalry. They had a much improved year in 2022 though. No, you can't mark the ball from a handball, only from a kick. If the ball hits the taller posts, it's a point. If it hits the outer posts, it's considered out of bounds and would be thrown in by the boundary umpire. In the past, players would run straight towards the goal when aiming from the boundary. Some still do, but the "around the corner" or "snap" approach is now very popular after Stevie Johnston did it with Geelong a few years ago. Yep, that is a speccy in my book! 👌 You definitely have the scoring sorted! In 2005, Swans were trying to end the longest drought at the time, which was 72 years. That game was also very close and well worth a look. Westcoast and Sydney played in back to back grand finals in 2005 and 2006 and both games were nail biters.

13:21 There's no time outs in Aussie Rules. This is an incident where one of Collingwood's runners, which are members of a team's support staff who are allowed to run messages out to players on the field so long as they don't interrupt play, got in the way of a player on his own team which resulted in a turnover. Whoops.

The 2010 grand final is a MUST WATCH and will teach you a lot about our game. The 2010 grand final was so controversial it sparked multiple rule changes, however it is far more entertaining when you know the context behind the match. the 2010 grand final was played between St Kilda and Collingwood, two teams who have very different histories. St Kilda are by far the unluckiest team in the competition, and from the inception of the AFL in 1897, they have only ever made 7 grand finals and only won 1 premiership, winning in 1966 against Collingwood (only by one behind). Collingwood have made the most grand finals of any other team, making 43 grand finals and winning 15 premierships since 1897. St Kilda really deserved the premiership considering how good their team was but Collingwood were the favourites. I don't want to spoil too much but an incredible comeback followed by the most dramatic end to a grand final ever. You will see how much St Kilda fans are tormented by how unlucky they are. Seriously the greatest game of AFL ever played, you have to watch it!!

@@johnnybasement430A ruckman is not the same as a forward. Full forwards and Center half forwards are usually tall and strong. Ruckman are tall and strong. Ruckman are technically part of the midfield group. Many teams have a 2nd Ruckman that usually also can play as a forward. Hi Johnny. My real name is Tyrone. The night before the 2010 Grand Final I delivered a pizza to a man named Tyrone. [I had actually heard of this dude, because there was this girl who told my mother that she was seeing a guy named Tyrone in my neighborhood, but it was not me but another Tyrone.] (It is not a very common name here in Australia). I introduced myself to him and asked him about the Grand Final. He told me that he was a St. Kilda supporter and I told him that I was a Collingwood supporter. We wished each other luck, which was weird but not. It was kind of like when the Harbaugh brothers wished each other luck before the Ravens played the 49ers, except I just met this guy. But we are name brothers. So I wished him and his team luck, his team needed luck, they had not won a premiership since 1966. I only wished him luck out of politeness, but it was apt. You will see why after you see the game. The 2010 AFL Grand Final. By the way I am a brown guy, and the St. Kilda Tyrone is a white dude. I know this is not important, but it helps to visualize me delivering this guy a pizza in 2010.

Ruckman is the person who taps the ball at stoppages - typically a tall person who can jump. Forward refers more to people who play near goal and kick goals. Most teams play with 2 ruckmen, with them sometimes being 'rested' up forward (these days the concept of resting is a bit of a furphy - but traditionally players wouldn't really cover as much of the ground as they do now - so if you were in a forward position you'd basically hang around the attacking end of the ground). There is no concept of time out in AFL. The coaches used to be allowed to send "runners" onto the field with a message (the pink shirts), but that's now been severely reduced (or even cut out altogether). A mark has to come from a kick - receiving a handpass/handball isn't a mark. If the ball hits the post it's a behind (it's a rule that a lot of people think should be changed) Loving to hear your excitement on the Specky!

If the ball hits any of the behind posts, the smaller post, it is deemed out of bounce and gets thrown in by the boundary umpire.

2021 Premership, Melbourne Demons, had not won the cup for 57 years. Finished regular season on top of the ladder, favourites to win the premiership. Get a very good start in the first quarter, then the Bulldogs take control for forty minutes to take a handy lead. Looking like winners. Then, as if they flicked a switch, the Demons just take control. Goals coming every 3 minutes, sometimes seconds between goals. They didn’t stop, no matter lead, until the final siren. kzbin.info/www/bejne/noLYfWaZi5Zllck

For a catch to be a "mark", it must: 1. Be kicked 2. Travel 15m or more over the ground 3. Not touched by any other player A catch is in the opinion of the umpire. The guide is roughly the same as cricket. The umpire has to believe the catching player has a moment where they are deemed in control of the ball. The rules around free kicks and the protected zone are way too complex to explain here. The wiki article is your best bet: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_kick_(Australian_rules_football)
@phunkmonkeycookiegarage7773
@phunkmonkeycookiegarage7773 Жыл бұрын
Just to add a little to help you. As mentioned above, a "Mark" (catch) is awarded to a player if, in the opinion of the umpire, the player has at some point during the attempt gained significant control of the ball. If after that, the player then loses control and spills the ball, then the mark (catch) will stand because the umpire has already assessed enough control has been displayed. What constitutes control? Well, umpires will usually, and I say, usually, reward effort. For example: If a player is standing in a paddock on their own, with no one within a few metres of them and they fumble the mark and spill the ball, then an umpire won't or at least shouldn't award that as a mark, no matter how much control the player had at some point during the effort. Now, when we are talking about a contested marking situation (having at least one opponent in the contest) with you, the umpire starts looking for just how much effort and control of an attempted mark is there. The more contested, (the more players in the pack) the harder it is and the more lenient an umpire may be in awarding a mark. The umpire also has to be conscious of a player's safety as well. So in a huge pack mark (speccy) situation, a player may well need to drop the ball to ensure a safe landing for themselves, which the umpire will understand. In regards to the term "Speccy", you will also hear terms such as "Hanger" and "Screamer" also being used as the same descriptions for a completely awesome mark. Speccy - Spectacular Hanger - Player Hang Time Screamer - Crowd screams with excitement
