For a Mark to be taken, 3 things have to happen: 1. The ball has to be kicked at least 15 meters, 2. The ball must be held onto for a reasonable period of time (that time is determined by the umpire), and 3. The ball must not have been touched by another player. there is no rule in the AFL saying that the player must maintain possession all the way to the ground if the three things above have been done.
@DaveWhoa

here's the official definition of a Mark from the AFL website: A Mark is taken if, in the opinion of the field Umpire, a Player catches or takes control of the football: (a) within the Playing Surface; (b) after it has been Kicked by another Player a distance of at least 15 metres; and (c) which has not touched the ground or been touched by another Player during the period from when the football was Kicked until it was caught or controlled by the Player. Interestingly none of those conditions specify control, but there is a Special Circumstances rule that does: "before the football was caught or *controlled* by the Player, it was touched by an Umpire or any other Official." It's up to the umpire to determine if the player had control. The mark is usually paid even if it bounces out of their hands after a landing, and it's extremely rare for a speccy to not be awarded a mark.

@@DaveWhoa For that last part, I'm pretty sure that Adam Hueskes would count himself in that rarity when he took a mark that even the boundary umpires called a mark that the on-field umpire called touched.

@@johnnybasement430 Athlonen and Dave are correct in the breakdown of what and when is a mark paid. One thing that not mentioned is that dropping the ball on landing, is that player protection will be considered. So marks will for most part be paid when this happens because the player is allowed to protect them selves on landing so if this means letting ball go once you have controled it or it is jarred from your grip on landing then so be it. This is not a written rule per say cuz as you explore this great game more you will find a lot of the rules are not set in stone and rely on umpire interpratation of said rule.

To answer a couple of questions: The umpire has discretion to call it a mark if they decide the player has controlled the ball in catching it for at least some time. So, player can catch, then as he/she hits the ground the ball can be dislodged and still be judged a mark. There will be times you could genuinely question if the player actually controls the ball (completes the catch) and for sure, sometimes umpires get caught up in the moment, a great example is Gary Ablett Senior's "one hander" where he is rotating in the air, but you'd be an unpopular umpire not to pay it as a mark, just based on how spectacular it is. The one taken right on the goal line was paid a mark, therefore no score is recorded, he was judged to take the mark before the ball crossed the line. Camera angles don't always tell the whole story. Think it's also worth noting, just on the camera angle thing, often these players are vertical jumping over the top of players who stand taller than 6 feet. When you see it live, the height they're climbing is insane.

You've come down the rabbit hole now, mate, and there's no turning back! Loving your enthusiasm for our unique game! To answer your first question - a player needs to be in complete control of the ball at some stage for it to be considered a mark, so it can be dropped or punched out of their hands, but as long as they had complete control of the ball for even a couple of seconds, it is considered a mark. The one at 17:35 (in my opinion) shouldn't have been considered a mark, for that reason. And that wasn't his teammate he took the mark over either. Geelong has horizontal stripes, Collingwood has vertical ones. It can be confusing when they play each other :) Your second question - at 07:46 it is not a goal because the ball had not yet crossed the goal line (the white line on the ground between the goalposts) when it was marked. It crossed the goal line AFTER it was in the hands of the defender. Most players are recruited at around 18 and most have retired by their early 30's. Considering what they put their bodies through, and the rate of injuries, these guys have surprisingly long careers. Just a note - the mark at 15:55 is a personal favourite of mine. This was voted Mark of the Year in 2019 because Liam Ryan had run from midfield so he would have already been gassing, and he outmarked a man who is easily a foot taller than him.

Anthony Howard Lockett is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club and Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). Nicknamed "Plugger", he is considered one of the greatest full forwards and players in the game's history. Tony (Plugger) Lockett has the record for the most courier goals, he was Inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and upgraded to Legend status in 2015, he is the most prolific goal kicker in VFL/AFL history, breaking Gordon Coventry's 1299 goal record in 1999 and eventually finishing with 1,360 goals in 281 games. He became the first full-forward to be awarded the Brownlow Medal (MVP) in 1987, won the Coleman Medal (Leading goal kicker for the season) four times, and kicked more than 100 goals in a season on six occasions (an AFL record he shares with Jason Dunstall of Hawthorn). 16 goals is his highest amount of goals kicked in 1 game.

Most concussions occur from player's heads hitting the ground. If a player is deemed concurred during a game, they cannot continue to play; and they are required to stand out for 12 days, and then pass a concussion test to be able to resume playing. A lot of the time, players landing hard after marking the ball tend to have the wind knocked out of them.

It's still a mark as long as you've caught it and had it under control in the air, even if falling onto the ground knocks it out of your hands. That decision to award the mark and free kick is the umpire's decision, and yes, people do argue about the more contentious ones a lot!

So the Gary Ablett mark at 17:41 is a good example of *in control*. A fast rise up, grabs the ball, and loses it as he hits the ground. As a former umpire i do NOT think he controlled it and would have called play on meaning general play would have continued. I think that players name and status influenced the decision for it to be a catch or mark.
@grahamjeffries1058
@grahamjeffries1058 Жыл бұрын
A mark is a catch. It results in a free kick where plays stops at the point of the catch. A player has 5 seconds or enough time to recover (about 30 seconds but often less to move the play on quicker. A player who is within scoring distance (usually 55 yards) has 30 seconds to either kick for goal or hand pass to another player who can kick 1 (usually he is a longer kick with a better chance of kicking the goal. A player must have considered to have control of the ball which may only be a second or 2. It may be 2 or 3 grabs to take a mark as long as an opposition player hasn’t touched the ball between those grabs.

Great video again! I've had a look through some of the comments and people are very much leading you on the right path. Like all dynamic sports though, there's many variable things that can happen, and there's rules/interpretations that try to clear up the confusion. Please don't feel you have to read or absorb all this but I figure for someone with your enthusiasm, this may scratch an itch. In addition to what others have said: -A "mark" is a catch from a kick, yes. But the term expanded to mean that, from originally refering to the spot or mark on the ground where the player completed "control" of the ball. When the mark is made and play stops, an opposition player can stand on that spot and try to block the kick. To keep track of where that spot is, the player or umpire can scuff the grass with their studs/stops/cleats so the player can visably see it and know they won't give further penalty away by getting too close to the kicker. That mark on the ground, is "the mark", if you will. You don't really see it in the big league, but junior and amateur players still make that mark or scuff all the time. And in the AFL itself you may hear reference to this imaginary spot through the umpire microphones, either by players asking where the mark is, or umpires voices saying things to the opposition player like "back a metre!". - For a player to be deemed to have "controlled" the ball (one of the conditions for a completed mark, along with the ball being caught on the full from a kick travelling at least 15 meters, untouched by other players), the judgement is based on the umpire's judgement that they controlled it sufficiently, and isn't contingent on a stated amount of time before it pops out or something. A good beginner's reference though - it's about a quarter of a second, not even that sometimes, that a player needs to hold/control it, for it to count. So it's quite quick! But it's all someone really needs to demonstrate they have it. That length of time usually fits with what "feels about right" for conditioned viewers. You know that instinctive sense of what's good and what's not when you know the game really well? Like that. That sense, I find, is also related a bit to the strength of the grip. Viewers (and probably umpires) would like to see the ball held a fraction longer, if it seems there's a smidgeon of dubiousness in the control, for the mark to be awarded as complete. - A player can complete the control of the ball over the boundary of play or through a goal/behind threshold. There's one or two of these in this vid you just watched. But, they need to have made first contact while the ball is within the field of play. So as they move with the ball during that quarter of a second or so, they may shift out of play and be deemed to have controlled it at that later point. In that instance, the "mark" is positioned back within the field of play as close to the out-of-bounds spot that is legally possible. One detail however - the ball is deemed to be within the field of play so long as the entirely of the ball has not passed the entire width of the boundary line or the goal/behind line/posts (including the padding!). In your video, at 7mins30, that mark is judged to fulfil the requirements because the goal umpire has deemed the player rolling over the top there has come into contact with the ball before all of it has crossed the goal line. It's hard to see from the camera angle provided, and largely looks like he marks it over the line. But that's just where the player ends up and I guess we just have to believe the umpire has seen it right. -A player can juggle/bobble the ball around before completing control, as long as no one else touches it inbetween juggles. But in the case above where the ball crosses a boundary or goal line, the contact between player and ball must be continuous, from the point at which all of the ball crosses all of the line, up until the control is deemed sufficient by the umpire. It can be juggled before that point, but not after. -Aaaand lastly, in regard to the game clock. If a player completes a mark before the expiration of time in any period, they can take a kick after the expiration of time. If close enough to goal, they can score from that kick. But unlike the rules with boundary and goal line, the mark must be completed before the expiration of time. With boundaries, as explained, it's just the first point of last continuous contact that needs to be made within the field, and the mark can be complete out of bounds. But for time expiration, the whole mark needs to be totally done before the period ends. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk. 😅

I'm commenting along as I'm watching. You're asking about the average career of an AFL player. Keep in mind that there is no "college" level down there, like ew have with the NCAA or university level. They go from their under-18/high school level, straight to professional. The AFL just finished their draft, which has a lot of kids who just turned 18 or will be turning 18 before the season starts. Most players will start to retire in their mid-30s. If I remember right, only 2 people have ever played the game into their 40s. Dustin Fletcher played until he turned 40, and was the 2nd oldest person to ever play, while Vic Cumberland played until he was 43, but that was back in the 1920s.

For it to be counted as a mark, its just this simple... he has to show the umpire that he had control of the football, even just for a second. If the umpire decides that he controlled the ball, then it's a mark. It doesn't matter if the ball comes out as he hits the ground, it's still a mark, but if a player juggles the ball 2-3 times in the air and falls to the ground and it comes loose, then the umpire won't pay a mark because he didn't have full control of the football. It's basically that simple, it's not like the NFL where you have to control the ball fully until the play has stopped and the ball can't move around in your arms. Even though the rules aren't as strict as the NFL with control of the ball, most players do still come done with the ball in the hands from a big mark... which is crazy considering the heights of most of them. As far as avg career for an AFL player, it really depends. If you're a fringe player, meaning you're not in the teams best 22-32 players, you could be drafted and then delisted 2-3 years later without ever playing an AFL game. If you're an established player that's in the Top 30 players at your club, then you'll most like have a 10-12 year career, with the very elite players that can go up to 15 or so years. It's basically the players that aren't good enough that have short careers in the AFL, barring a career ending injury of course.
@Simmo87
@Simmo87 Жыл бұрын
Average career length is unclear. Some sources have indicated to me the average can be up to 6 years. But I also note some elite sports academic papers (written 15-20 years ago but don't imagine it's changed tooooo much) that quote the average career as 2.9 years and/or 30 games. That will include all players, including those who get drafted and never play. You can count on one hand the players who have topped 400 games and/or 20 years, but it's happened. A career that spans 8-10 years and 100-200 games is considered to be a fairly good return. And 200-300 games and/or 11-15 years would be considered very good.

@Simon M. Yeah, I heard about the 2.9 years ave career many years ago too. I think now it's more like 3.5 due to more professional drafting and smaller list sizes in more recent times. Cheers!

Alright some answers for the questions. A mark is awarded when the umpire deems that that the player marking the ball has sufficiently controlled the ball ie a catch. Unlike NFL and Cricket catches in AFL catches can be awarded as a mark as soon as control of the ball has been established, so if you take control even for a moment a mark can be paid even if you lose control of the ball after taking control of the ball. If you mark the ball and control it before crossing either the boundary or the goal line it remains a mark however if you juggle a marking attempt across a line it is deemed not a mark be you are juggling the ball and haven’t taken full control before the ball crossed the line. On that for the ball needs to fully cross the goal or boundary line for it to be called goal/behind/out of bounds.

On average, an AFL player's career can be around 10 years; depending upon the number and types of injuries. The record holder for the most games played was Michael Tuck from Hawthorn F C, 426 games from 1972 to 1991; but Brent Harvey from North Melbourne F C broke that in 2016 by playing 432 games, from 1996 to 2016. Dustin Fletcher from Essendon F C played 400 games from 1993 to 2015; his career lasted 22 years and 58 days, an all time league record. There are currently only 5 players to have reached the 400 game club.

The umpire has a lot to say about what is and isn't a mark. It's called a "mark" because the place where the player first grabs the ball is what counts. The umpire "marks" the spot and then directs the opposition to stand on the mark while the person with the ball goes back to take the kick. These days the umpire says "stand" and the opposition player cannot move from the mark until the umpire calls "play on". For those that appear to be dropped, the umpire determines the player controlled the ball for long enough and can still award the mark. Of course, the umps don't always get it right, but once it's deemed a mark, It goes down in history as just that. Mostly they are ones where the ball is released when they hit the ground but they make for interesting banter for years to come. The one where he marks it in between the goals is paid because he got it before it crossed the line and controlled it to the ground, even though he went through the goals in doing so. Had he dropped it, it would have been a behind (considered touched) or, if he had first touched it after it crossed the line it would have been a goal. That's why they react saying "It IS a mrk!", because they are waiting to see what the umpire says ... it's either a score, or a mark. Yes, they have 30 seconds, but only if it's inside the 50 metre arc ... otherwise, around the rest of the ground it's 10 seconds. There is a quiz on YT to pick a team but it's really lame. You are better off just picking one based on their colours, their name or drawing one out of a hat. Once you're on the bandwagon, you will ride the highs and lows like the rest of us (as you well know from being a Jets fan). Gary Ablett was known as "God" back in his day. Many say he's the GOAT. Then, they say that about his son, Gary Ablett Jr too. Retired a couple of years ago. Jeremy Howe is the player who has a lot of marks. He has played for Melbourne and Collingwood. He does this on a regular basis.

Concussions are a problem, the modern game is protecting the head alot more than the old days. Thing is a helmet doesn't really help as the cause is the brain shaking around in the skull, a helmet will protect the skull and give a bit of shock absorption but a proper anti concussion helmet would have to be huge.
@johnnybasement430
@johnnybasement430 Жыл бұрын
I always felt that wearing no helmet at all is better than having one. My Reason is that the players are more aware that their head is exposed and will lay down a proper tackle. Im still new to Footy but I dont see many leading with their head as in the NFL which supports my theory! Old NFL films of guys wearing basically nothing on their head avoid head shots as well! Thanks for taking the time Goanna!! #BasementMentality

To add to that, very very few concussions occur when the guys are taking a specky, more often from accidental head clashes or high bumps that hit the head(where the guys usually reported and misses a few games because of, hitting the head of someone has become a major focus in the last 5-10 years)

Never use the term 'catch' again for a mark...... You get 30 seconds to use your free kick INSIDE the 50m arc, 15 seconds OUTSIDE the 50 before "play-on" is called by the ump, (then you can tackled again.........

Concussion is a problem , and the bloke who took the second last mark has had problems in retirement with the effects of concussion. We have a lot of concussion protocols now where a player cant play next week if they have been concussed and they have to pass tests . The rules have also changed a lot to protect the head and there are severe penalties for deliberate hits to the head . Some players wear a soft helmet , hard helmets have proven to not help much as players tend to go in harder and use the helmet as a weapon while the brain still gets sloshed around in there . We also play on natural grass which is softer than your Astro Turf so when a player hits the ground its not so bad . Its hard to say what the average players career is because you have a lot of young players get drafted and many dont make it for long . But the established players that are in the team every week can play from 18 Yo to mid 30's. There are a few Tom Brady's though like Michael Tuck and Dustan Fletcher who seem to go on for ever . Fletchers son is now a kicker in your gridiron . Super skinny at the moment can really kick it long way like his father.

I'm a NFL fan from Melbourne Australia the team that enjoy watching is The Green Bay Packers and I still don't understand why they got rid of Adams? Who has Rogers got to throw too? The 50 meter arc means nothing it's just a marker on the ground to show you how far the goals are. A mark is when you take control of the ball if it gets hit out of your hands it's still a mark or comes out when you hit the ground it's still a mark

Average AFL top level career length would be more dictated by their prowess and ability than health and injury. So lets say over 10 years easy. Nick Riewoldt a legend of Saint Kilda 16 years. Johnathon Brown of Brisbane 14 years. Both of those had medical issues, head knocks, knees etc but they were best of the best and would be an indicator. Dermott Brereton a legend of an earlier and far rougher era 13 years. Was king hit at the opening bounce of the 1989 Grand Final, had ribs busted, puked his guts out and refused to come off. KZbin it........

The thing about injuries is that the person putting in the hit to another has to be careful he does hurt himself in the process. In the NFL having padding tends to allow another player to go in for a hit thinking he is not going to get hurt. The helmets and padding tends to make people more of a daredevil in colliding. In a mark the player must control the ball. If he marks it but then loses it hitting the ground he still had control of the ball.

Most of these are Insane but your right 43. Stephen Silvagni Shouldn't have been paid or the Ablett mark they never have control of the ball. You have to gain full control of the ball as soon your deemed to have done this the mark is completed. So even if the ball is knocked loose buy impacting the ground on landing or contact from other players it's paid as a mark like 37 Brent Montgomery. I'm sure there was an unreal mark by Jimmy Bartell running back into a pack on this list it's better than the Brown and Riewoldt efforts

With the marking on the goal line, it is not classed as a goal if it is marked before the line and is classified as "touched" and only worth 1 point. Same if an opposition/defending player touches the ball before it crosses the line to save a goal, that is classed as a "rushed" behind and only worth 1 point.
@off1k
@off1k Жыл бұрын
Just to add or make it more precise. It's not only before the line but if the ball is ON the line, even if it's a fraction on the line it will be deemed touched/rushed or mark. For it to be a goal or out of bounds, the ball has to be completely over the line.
@stevepitt1414
@stevepitt1414 Жыл бұрын
The initial touch has to be before the entirety of the ball has gone over the line. The marking player also has to have complete control of the ball for it to count. If he juggled the ball or didn't have control of the ball then it would have been a behind

I just knew this would come up , I knew you would ask about dropping it when they hit the ground (or just prior) . So , it's up to the Umpire , Johnny as to whether the player has Marked the ball , the Umpire has to deem that the player "controlled the ball to the ground" so , if it pops out on the way down or when he hits the ground people argue till the cows come home whether this or that should have been paid a mark ............ UMPIRES mate , 'nuff said? It's not the same as the NFL with regards to "completion" The only question is "Did he control it "TO THE GROUND" ? Also , if he wants his free kick , he only gets 30 seconds if he is INSIDE the 50 . Outside the 50 the umpire will only give him 10 seconds .

You'll notice that 99.9% of all marks are clear catches. But technically the player has to be adjudged by an umpire to have caught and 'controlled' the ball. Once that has occurred the umpire 'awards' / 'pays' the mark. What happens after that (another player rakes it out of the catcher's hands, it pops out after hitting the deck from 10 feet up etc.) is irrelevant. It can be a judgement call by the umpire, who only has a couple of seconds to decide, and can be a source of controversy when a mark is or isn't awarded. The more difficult the attempt, the little more leeway from the umpire (a couple of marks in this compilation are a bit iffy, IMO). But this rewards players for taking the risk, which is good for the game as these spectacular marks really are considered the most exciting play in Aussie Rules. 👍

Watch marks by Jeremy Howe, the best high marker of all time and still playing. Average career, hard to judge as most will last 8 to 10 years but some last over 18 years, and don’t forget that an AFL player runs 8 to 10 miles a game. Also watch the defensive player alway try to punch the ball away, some do but they are quite happy to also punch the man.

To be judged a mark (catch) you must be deemed to have been in control of the ball. A totally subjective term governed by the umpire(referee) in control of play at that point in time. Former umpire of over 400 games here again.....

Pretty accurate with the mark description. For the sake of game speed though, u only get perhaps 10 sec to continue or kick the ball. It is 30 sec if the umpire deems u are within scoring distance. So if u mark it down the backline, u dont have long to kick it and certainly not 30 secs. Game would be slower and more boring if it was always 30 sec Most players can score from around the 50m line, so u will get 30 sec from 50 or closer. Some stronger kickers can score from 60m and ump will give those players 30 sec too. Generally further out than 60, u will never get 30 sec. Maybe 10 sec to move the ball on. Ump warns them to play on, then its on again and u can tackle them. If siren has gone, u will always get as long as u want to kick it no matter where u mark it. Obv if u are 60m or more away from goal, players wint bother having a serious shot. They nay try and bomb one in

The only NFL player in all the years i've watched that comes close is my lions man Calvin Johnson Megatron was badass for my Detroit he jumped over all the defenders mostly double teamed his whole career .The umpire alone decides if the player has held the mark for long enough before either it hits the ground or gets knocked out of his hands ...Pick your team wisely Johnny because once you choose you can't go back your loyalty is who you are ,choose by colours ,jumper design ,or just if you like the name ...see you in the basement soon #12 Namath
