In rugby if they score a try,they are given a conversion kick at the posts for a possible two points. Another kick for posts is after a penalty is awarded and a potential three points can be given, however in a penalty situation the team decides to kick for posts or kick for the line out if they believe their chances are high to score a try + conversion. This particular game had alot of penalties awarded and the teams mostly chose to kick for the posts to get the three points .

I am from New Zealand. They are kicking field goals after a penalty. They do this when they think the defense is tight. So they want to open up a points lead to force the opposition to be more aggressive in their attack. if your defense is strong and they keep attempting to score a try they may open up an opportunity for a counter attack.

Welcome to the great sport of rugby! As an American who now lives in Toulouse (southwest of France - kind of the big rugby territory of this country), I can tell you that it can be a bit tricky to understand the kicking aspect of the game if you compare it to American football. But keep in mind that scoring a try requires the player to touch the ball down while the team has to avoid penalties, because even a "soft" penalty leads to the team immediately losing possession or by not fully touching the ball down. You already understood this through the somewhat good example shown around your 3:00 time of this video when Damien Penaud for France not only doesn't touch the ball down, but didn't get to cross the try line. Plus, any sort of "fumbling" around of the ball is a penalty because it's considered a knock-on. You can only advance the ball by running with it, or kicking it forward. All other passes must be lateral. So very often - especially early in the match - you'll see teams going for the "easier" points with kicking (by the way - the goal posts are tighter together in rugby compared to football, so it's not as easy as it always looks). The other aspect of kicking - and one area shown a lot by both New Zealand and France throughout this match - is kicking the ball strategically to try to pin the other team back. It's kind of a possession strategy thing that has developed a lot in recent years. Teams will choose to actually give away possession and trust their defense by kicking the ball to the opposing team in a deep position in order to try to recover possession closer to the try line or scoring area, rather than try to run the ball up. It requires a strong defensive line and skillful kickers - two things both of these sides have. Last thing I want to mention - this was a terrific match for France, because beating New Zealand in the group stage is not something any team has ever done before. So while both of these teams are really great, the two best I think at the moment are South Africa and Ireland, and their group match was an incredible match... maybe the best I've ever witnessed. Check that one out next!

Did you really had to explain that?? I mean, is american football really different than rugby?
@TheRhussmann
@TheRhussmann 7 ай бұрын
@@ytevysbhtb I think the subtleties of rugby are hard to understand by someone who is only used to American football, especially with how penalties are called as well as with positioning strategy. American football is all about gaining possession and keeping it for as long as possible to score each and every time you have control of the ball. But you have strict limits on what you can do (four possessions with not enough advancement of the ball would be similar to an automatic penalty in rugby, for example). So the kicking strategies are quite different, on top of the mostly non-stop action taking place in rugby (at least in comparison to American football, where each "play" lasts an average of about 5 seconds, then a typical pause of about 45 seconds before another play starts up again).

Those aren't field goals but penalty kicks. Defensive team made a foul, whatever it was (and which you can't see by watching highlights) so attacking team, since the foul was close enough to the try zone, can choose to kick the ball in for 3 points, from the angle the foul has been made. (they can choose other options but that's not the topic here) New Zealand made a lot of fouls during that game, so they got penalized a lot. Other kicks for scoring are: -A conversion kick, right after a try as been scored (same as a field goal but from the angle the try has been scored, that's why they sometimes kick from the very wing of the field) . 2 points - A drop kick, on the fly, whenever they want during the a live play, one condition being the kicker must drop the ball in front of him once before kicking it. 3 points.

If you want to understand the rules, watch a couple of full games and pay attention to the referee. Rugby Union can seem like chaos, but it’s actually pretty strict and you will see a lot of calls being made.

These highlights kind of confuse things. They show thr penalty kicks, but not sny of the stuff that leads up to it. So just kick kick kick. But no context

This is highlight package so you seeing the kicks for goal and not what happened before. They are either kicking for goal after scoring a try which is called a conversion , or after been given a penalty by referee. They can have an option to kick for goal or run with the ball to try a score a try

When a team scores a try (5 points) the equivalent of a touchdown (6 points), a conversion (2 points) attempt is awarded to that same team, i.e, kick at goal perpendicular to the spot where the try was scored. For example: 1. if a try is scored in the corners then the conversions are quite tough because you are at an really tight angle. 2. If a try is scored close or underneath the posts, then the conversion is a straightforward one. Comparing it to NFL/football, the kick can be charged down, but the opposing players need to be in their goal line and can only charge down once the kicker moves, i.e, initiating the run/walk to the kicking tee. It is extremely rare to see a kick being successfully charged down. The penalties or attempt to kick the ball at goal is normally a result of an infraction to the opposing team and generally the team awarded with a penalty can opt for either: a. a scrum (similar to a football scrimmage but 8 players all tight together) from the spot of the foul. b. kick the ball into touch/outside of the field (where they would regain possession of the ball and throw a lineout, i.e, where players jump to regain the ball). c. tap and go (i,e, a player light taps the ball with one of feet and runs agsinst the opposition) from the spot of the foul. d. kick at goal (which we saw plenty on this game) from the spot of the foul. When to use each option depends on each teams strength, the momentum of the game, the type of game, the players you have on the field and the game plan. a) and b) are risky taking opportunities because you may lose the possession of the ball. Normally if you are playing knockout rugby or against a rival in a World Cup you take the kicks/points on offer and you build scoreboard pressure.

As has been said before, I'd watch a full match, so you can see the full context of the penalty decisions and the flow of the game. There are some full games on KZbin, and if you want to watch the World Cup live in the US, it's being broadcast live on CNBC and streamed on the Peacock app.

In rugby, you have three types of fouls: - Penalties. Sanction most of the foul plays. The team can decide to either kick-off (they will get the lineout if they get into touch) or try to score the penalty by having the balled kicked in between the goal posts. - Kick-off. For a couple of minor foul plays, in particular during mauls and scrums. Same as penalties, but you cannot try to score and the opponent will get the lineout if it goes into touch. - Forward. When someone throws the ball forward to the ground with their hands/arms. This causes a scrum with the opposite team having the ball. And four ways of scoring: - Tries are worth 5 points, +2 if you kick a conversion - Penalties kicked in between the posts are worth 3 points - Drop goals are a bit like penalties, but done during the play itself (ball has to hit the ground before being kicked up to the posts). 3 points as well. Teams always try to score tries. But in very contested games or when the defences are particularly good, often a team will take whatever points it can, and will kick the penalties to get points instead of trying to get a lineout (better to have 99% 3 points than 50% 7 points, sometimes :) In this game, the French provoked a lot of fouls from the All Blacks, and as they were behind on the scoreboard, they chose to kick a lot of those. This way they stayed close enough that when they score two tries, it allowed them to win the game. It's a bit like in football when a team tries for the kick on the 4th down. Worst than a touchdown, but in the end those 3 points can make the difference between winning and losing. And you want to score as often as possible when you're on the attack.

Also, rugby rules have plenty of little details and technicalities that make it a bit tough to understand at first. But you can understand most of what happens by understanding those principles: - Anybody in front of the ball carrier is offside (hence you cannot pass the ball forward, and you cannot enter in a maul or ruck from any other point than your own half of the field, or you cannot have one of your teammate making a screen in front of you, etc.) - The ball should stay "alive" and the game shouldn't stop (hence a team is penalized if it's responsible for the ball and cannot make it live on, a very important point to understand in mauls and rucks, also it makes it mandatory for the tackled and the tackler to release the ball as soon as they're on the ground, etc.) - Any action endangering a player is penalized (tackles rules are very strict, same with touching players in the air)

No such thing as a field goal. A kick at goal is awarded as a penalty, for 3 points. Or as a conversion, after a try is scored for 2 points. Or, as a drop goal, for 3 points.
