The plot is that he is the descendant of the great ninja, Jiraiya. His family moved to the US ages ago so he was born there. When the youkai escaped, the descendants of the original ninja who sealed the youkai have the mission to eliminate them. He left the US and traveled to Japan to complete his mission. Due to being born in the US, he speaks English and his teammates teach him Japanese. BTW, the actor is actually Japanese-American in real-life.
