We were lucky to have our good friend Kyra and her daughter Anabel visit us in Denmark recently. I grabbed some video at the end of their trip, after they've been here for 10 days. In this video they describe some observations from their days in Copenhagen, what fears they overcame, and what highlights they will take home with them when they return to the US.

"That's what she said" = "Det sagde hun også i går". Pretty direct translation except "i går" just adds "yesterday" to the phrase, doesn't really work without it in Danish. And it's used a ton here as well!
@madawcofarreat2348
@madawcofarreat2348 2 жыл бұрын
You can also just say "som man siger..." with an awkward look on your face, which is sort of the same thing where you're implying that something said could have those kind of undertones. But "det sagde hun også i går" is the direct equivalent to "that's what she said".

You're so right that Denmark is an excellent "starter country" for Euro travelling - it can sound daunting at first but once you realise, like you say, that everyone speaks excellent English, the country is super safe (even as a solo woman), good infrastructure, etc, it really is so easy to get around. And Danes are just so welcoming, too! That helps 🙂🇩🇰❤

where is Copenhagen? I thought it was an island close to sweden, far away from Mainland Denmark, which I have visited many times. Most Danes I know doesnt include Copenhagen as real danish city, but more like a swedish province, living on welfare and financilly supported by taxpayers on the mainland, just like Greenland.
@Qija1
@Qija1 2 жыл бұрын
@@factfulness-perleth7764 where did you get that information from. Copenhagen is located on the most populated island in Denmark, Sjælland. It has more citizens living there than the mainland that boarders Germany. One of the most densely populated region is the capital Region which also covers the north east side of the island. It is absolutely a real Danish city. Ofc it’s not the oldest city, but it has beautiful architecture and old buildings and castles. We also have multiple big castles in the capital region in general. If anyone compared Copenhagen to Sweden, it is most likely meant as a lighthearted joke by the people living on the peninsula, Jylland. It’s a back and forth joke, where people from the capital then claims that people from the peninsula are all farmers and Germans. It’s really not to be taken seriously. A lot of danish humor is based of irony, sarcasm, and/or self deprecating jokes. Also it’s pretty darn difficult living on welfare AND living in the capital of a country at the same time. We might have a good welfare system in place, but they still don’t give you that much money for spending, it’s just the necessary amount for a “normal” life. And living in a big city is expensive and is more of a luxury as many jobs or educations are located there. People living on welfare typically live in small cities in apartment complexes. Also the reason Copenhagen is so Far East is because it was central during the kalmar Union between Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland. It is still our largest city And a majority of our transportation is connected through the capital. It is super easy and quick traveling to the capital from most points in Denmark.

Your reaction is exactly like my own! I can't stand it! Urgh! 😝😝 Little anecdote.. I had a buddy that YEARS ago was on a motorcycle vacation in England with his girlfriend. Their bike broke down, he found a guy in a nearby town that put them up while he fixed the bike. Anyway, upon getting home, Jan (my buddy) sent him a bottle of Gammel Dansk. The guy sees it says "Bitter" on the bottle, and thinks it's beer (the British drink beers of the type "bitter". He pours it into a beer glass, and takes a huge swig... It flies out of his mouth, and he's like, "holy crap! If this is what they drink, it's little wonder the vikings were so feared!" 🤭😁👍 Re "that's what she said" In Danish it's "det sagde hun også igår" ]d'_saa'_h'un_os_e'gaw'[

It is a great museum, and it is always free. Mr. David was a very rich man, and he collected many different things that interested him. First and foremost Islamic art. He left his collection, his town house and most of his fortune to a foundation that runs the museum. The foundation has since expanded the collection. The museum is now one of the top ten collections of Islamic art outside of the Islamic world. Some years back they bought the neighbouring house to expand the museum. But still, few people know about this place.

A little bit related to "Summer in Denmark is my favorite day of the year"... It's not really that bad, and I'm sure you noticed that, but weather can be so different, usually May is the best month to visit in spring and August the best in summer... Usually! That's what she said = Det var det hun sagde . Directly translated I don't say that phrase in danish, I always do it in english. But I would perhaps say : "Det var også det hun sagde" instead, if I hade to do it in danish.

You guys need to try hønnusyp from Bornholm after that Gammel Dansk - there are as many versions of it as there are villages on Bornholm. Also, "Det sagde hun også i går"

Hahaha😂 I hate Gammel Dansk too, it really is a strong tasting drink😂 But you also had a large shot there, usually Danes drink this from small shot glasses😄

Yeah and you're supposed to nip it, not drink it in one go. Doesn't make it taste any better, but makes it less overwhelming.

@@annejeppesen160 In my family it went down in one go, I saw that at a paaskefrokost once, and asked if I could taste it, my dad said yes and I downed it to, I guess I was around 7 or 8 years old, the whole table looked at me with big eyes and started laughing their asses of.. 😂 Since then I haven't touched it😂🤣 I did get a little tipsy too as I recall it😅

My wife and I will be arriving in Copenhagen on the 13th of September for a two week vacation! Looking forward to seeing lots of great stuff, visiting family and friends including a side trip to Sweden. Maybe I'll even vlog a bit of it... Skoal. Edit: a question... What would be the best way to exchange currency? (before leaving, after arriving, banks, exchanges, post offices?)

Use your credit card. We dont really use cash anymore. But if you have to use cash, beware that in the "tourism" part, there will be high % fee, when you take money out.
@JanBruunAndersen

I don't what is best or cheapest, but I would just get a little bit of cash, mainly coins, upon arrival. For most expenses you will be using your credit card but ONLY if it has a chip + PIN code.
@Qija1
@Qija1 2 жыл бұрын
Having a card that has Chip + pin is important. Cash aren’t used as widely here anymore, mostly by children or old people. In supermarkets and on gas-stations we do take dollars or Euros or the like, but you will get your change back in dkk. So it’s easier to just use card

To appreciate Gammel Dansk you have to like strong liquorice and bitternes. :) Strong liquorice is a speciallity of Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands

Denmark isn't exactly confused about seasons, we don't have any, we are just affected by the season/weather of Germany, Sweden and Norway.

"What she said"... "Hvad hun sagde" Is the most commen danish phrase. If you arent joking, this will be the phrase to go to. "Det sagde hun også igår" It has a subtext of something sexy... If you are joking/ sarcastic, this is the phrase you will want to use. "Ditto" or "enig". -Those are the most common danish slang phrases. Another great video and thanks to your friends for joining in and sharing their vacation here in Denmark.

Well the thing about "Gammel Dansk" is, that as a Dane, you are supposed to drink it once in a while, but then someday you realise that you hate the stuff, and says NO! -that is the day you are finally grown up!

Yes og you translate directly. But the equivalent to the saying. For example someone says "wauw that was bigger than I thought it would be" and then you "say that's what she said". Then the saying is "det sagde hun også i går". "Det var det hun sagde" makes no sense in that context.

If "Gammel Dansk" tests ones limits, try the German spirit "Ratzeputz". It's not that it is strong in alcohol (about 60%) but it is very strong in taste. So strong that if you mix it with "Tabasco" sauce it actually becomes milder (I have tried it, yes it's true).

Well - ”That’s what she said” is basically the same in Danish: ”Det sagde hun også i går” (”That she also said yesterday”) or when extra saucy ”Det sagde hun også i går aftes” (“That she also said last night”).
