This one is open to interpretation. I've seen this movie maybe 20 times, and still there are questions unanswered. That's what made this one a classic. There's no definite conclusion or interpretation that satisfies you. This was one of those "eff with your head" movies. Yes he was menially unstable and homicidal, and just plain crazy.. but at the same time you couldn't wait for his next perfectly executed line. I still don't understand how he got away with any of it, even if it was his imagination. Bottom line, if he actually DID those things, how'd he get away with all of it? Anyway, great reaction. The great thing about Willem Dafoe's performance was that he did each one of his scenes 3 times and the Director told him to do each scene differently. The first like he didn't believe Patrick had anything to do with it, then that he knew Patrick Murdered Paul and finally that he wasn't sure if Patrick did it or not. Then she chose the best of each 3 and only she and the editor knew which one was used. She even mixed them up in the different releases of the movie afterwards with the widescreen version the full screen version and the director's cut of the film just to mess with people. lol Oh and the business cards thing is pretty much just a yuppie dick measuring contest.

If you've known a psychopath/sociopath they repeat things they've heard and read to fit in or impress but it's almost never their own thought out critiques and theories. Once you've known one pretty well you can see it in others pretty easy when you get to know them a bit.

Think it was the author's critiquing of the whole 80s yuppie culture.... the corporate greed, the status symbols of the hot wives, expensive apartments and restaurants, drugs and sex, porn and violent movies. The pop music of the time was overly produced but without any real passion. Not that I agree with that, it's the music I grew up with and loved it. But for those who grew up on sixties and seventies revolutionary artists, there was snobbery that 80s music was artificial in comparison.

Awesome reaction! One of my favorite little facts about the film was that when Bateman kills Jared Leto’s character with the axe, he genuinely didn’t expect it because it wasn’t in his copy of the script. So when he heard Bale scream and turned around to see him swinging an axe at him, Leto was genuinely shocked! Lol

Most of it did happen. Notice how names got mixed up the whole movie? Everyone has the same haircut, clothes and talks the same. The lawyer at the end for example thought Bateman was someone else and he also thought he ate with Paul in London. Basically just a critique on yuppie culture and materialism everyone is too self absorbed to notice their surroundings.

You're the only reactor I've seen have a response to that shot where you briefly see a part of Paul Allen's body and his blood pooling right after Patrick hits him with the axe. It's so subtle but so graphic.

Woah, this is the first video of you I have seen, and turns out it's your first! :) I think this is one of those movies it's helpful to check our some "what does it mean" explanations, because there are several theories, and some are quite deep. Anyway I really liked your reaction, you had a good balance between pausing/commenting and just...reacting :D One advice I give to all reactioneers(is that a word?) is to turn on subtitles, because there is so much bad audio/dialogue out there it's often super easy to miss important info. So, it happened in his head. The idea, at least as I understand it, is that it's a commentary on the culture of corporate America. The obsession over the cards, the cookie cutter identical suits, the bro talk, the cheating on each other with each others significant others. The murder, or fantasy of it, is just the mental breakdown that takes place when you do something meaningless and without any purpose. If you notice, they all have the same job but none of them ever talk about work. It's a critique of living without substance and focusing on popularity and others perceptions of us and how that life can, literally, be soul killing. It isn't called Psycho after all it's specifically American Psycho.

According to the Director most of the murders are real. The only thing that is a delusion is the sequence with the cat and the exploding police cars. The real estate lady hid the bodies because she didn't want the property values to drop.

The business cards scene is just a dick measuring contest between a group of rich, conceited, disaffected yuppies who have lost themselves and their individuality to Wall Street and some distorted version of the American dream - which the entire movie is a commentary on. The scene has two purposes - one is to show us that these guys are all trying to one-up each other, but to the viewer, all the business cards look nearly identical - and so do the men - they all wear similar suits, have similar haircuts, and have more or less the same jobs. Also - they all get mistaken for each other, which is why nobody calls Patrick by his real name when he sees them. The other purpose of the scene is to to give viewers another example of how insanely neurotic Patrick is about the tiniest detail - which is explored much more in the book - to an exhausting point honestly, but it’s supposed to be exhausting because it’s showing us what it’s like to live inside Patrick’s head.

I've always been on the side of thinking whether he actually killed anyone or not doesn't matter, it's beside the point really. Ambiguity is Patrick Bateman. And Patrick Bateman is ambiguity. He is an embodiment of the very word. This was my conclusion after a lot of thought. It was fun thinking about this movie and that is amazing cinema at it's core imo. Everyone can come to their own conclusions and they are all correct. A Schroedinger's cat of a film. Love love love it. Read the book!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I remember buying and reading the book before I saw the movie and wondering how they were even gonna pull it off. Because it’s far more graphic in the book, sexually and violently. But I really loved what Mary Harron and Guinevere Turner did with the adaptation. Because in the book it’s pretty clear he did murder all his victims. In the movie it’s made to seem ambiguous, like it could be all in his mind. The story goes director Mary Harron met with a lot of actors who all wanted to play Patrick psychologically and they all wanted to talk about his motivations. But when Christian Bale met with Mary he completely understood that Patrick was this pathetic character and thought of him more as a construct. So Mary was committed to him playing Patrick. But the producers wanted to offer Leonardo DiCaprio $20 million to play the part for any already low budget art film. Mary didn’t think that made any sense so she basically quit. Writer Guinevere Turner maintains that what had happened was author/feminist Gloria Steinem had pulled Leo aside and convinced him he shouldn’t be playing a character like Patrick Bateman in this movie because he had recently made Titanic and his fan base was thirteen year old girls and it wouldn’t be right. So he backed out, the producers came to their senses, Mary came back, they hired Christian Bale and the rest is history.

A lot of people fall into the trap of being overly literal in their analysis and focusing only on the "did he really do the murders or not?" crap, and that completely misses the point of the film. Whether he really killed all those people, imagined the murders, or it was some combination of reality and fantasy by an unreliable narrator is secondary to the point of being meaningless. The point that the film is driving at is everyone around him in this hedonistic, capitalist, Wall Street shithole is more or less just like him. They're all fail sons awash in greed, excess, fake jobs and basically doing nothing but going to useless meetings and eating at overpriced restaurants. Patrick Bateman and Paul Allen keep getting mistaken for other people because they're all the same empty vessel. And even the people who aren't psychopathic killers like Patrick are oblivious or indifferent to his crimes because they're focused on the mundane, shallow, spiritually dead pursuits that make up modern consumer culture. There is no punishment or catharsis for Bateman because the entire society in which he lives is built upon letting wealthy psychopaths like him get away with their crimes.

I’ll start by saying thank you for giving my video a look, it’s very appreciated. I think one of the things that isn’t considered with reaction videos is that they’re in the moment, and in this case, a first time watch. You’re taking the information in, while trying to talk, and being in front of the camera is an awkward feeling in itself. It’s also just about having fun to me. I’m not trying to do a deep dive analysis on understanding the many levels of a movie, or this would be a different channel. Though of course I’d love it if I understood it all the first time around. I appreciate the passion you have towards the movie as I feel the same way about others myself. It wasn't a response to you, personally. Of course, a first time reactor can't be expected to grasp everything in one sitting. I'm sure I watched the film a few times and read a decent number of interpretations online before getting a firm grasp on its themes and coming to my own conclusions. What really gets on my nerves is how some people refuse to look below the surface of a masterpiece like this film and vomit the most basic, mindless takes into the ether before moving on to the next piece of culture they probably won't try to understand in any meaningful way. Dan Olson's video "Annihilation and Decoding Metaphor" tackles the topic well: how even most "film analysis" videos on KZbin completely fail at their mission because they remain focused on the literal while refusing to engage with the metaphorical, which is key to understanding any film worth analyzing. For the most part, I enjoyed your reaction. Though, I'll admit, I started to see red when you talked over the end of Bateman's opening monologue. That was a key piece of dialogue that's important to understanding his character and you were going on about masks at Walmart. 🙃

I guess it's kind of weird that I noticed this but if you know about the topic you know about the topic lol but I guess it helps me and others see things in movies you wouldn't really catch but he credits the quote to Ed gein when in fact it was Ed Kemper who said the "head on a stick" quote and I think that they purposely made him miss that to show that he's kind of a poser & not really crazy if not it was just awful effort of research on the actual movies part I really hope it's the first one because if they really didn't mean to miss that it will rub me the wrong way Ed Kemper is way more terrifying then Ed gein Kemper was like 6 ft 9 & 300 pounds and a IQ of 145 the genius threshold is 130 the average person IQ is 85-115 over all 98% of people have a IQ below 130 and even the police described the guy as a and i quote "a natural born killer with reason"

hey girl. rly good review and analysis of the movie but you missed some things i also missed when watching the first time. Bret Easton Ellis (wrote the book this movie is based on) pretty much confirmed he (bateman) committed all these crimes (and more that are not shown in the movie - if you are adventurous read the book hehe ). The key factor why he was getting away with these crimes is shown in many scenes : all the yuppies in this movie look the same, do the same and act the same to a degree that you cant tell them apart. Its shown before the paul allen introduction/ business card scene => patrick gets mistaken for a guy named marcus who has the same job, wears the same cloths and has the same haircut (just one example of people mixing things up). Patrick uses this to his advantage multiple times in the movie. Most notably would be the lawyer scene where its 100% clear the lawyer thinks patrick is a diffrent person and also says "the flaw of your story is that bateman is such a boring spineless dork, incapeable of executing these murders"
