I can't help but disagree with your interpretation of the ending. American Psycho, as a book and a film is pretty heavily anti-materialism, most of BEE's work is. Bateman's entire dilemma hinges on the fact he's an emotionless husk, that everything in the world can't buy him any positive emotion. It's a condemnation of the vile, elite, and rich lifestyle at its core. Bateman can have anything he wants and it'll never make him happy, or special, or make him matter, and it's the perfect conclusion to a film that digs into the psyche of a monster who wants validation. You can say it's not good comeuppance, sure, but it's the only logical conclusion. It's a system that leaves you blissfully ignorant and maliciously carefree or hollowly compliant. The idea is never that you should feel bad for Patrick, that he deserves sympathy, it's that you should be disgusted by the system that allows people like him to rest on their laurels. It's one last absurd contrast, an uncivilized, savage maniac settling in among what we're supposed to see as sophisticated elites, frustratingly in place.

Adding to your takeaway from the ending, I think this is another part of this movie being a “satire”. He is living basically the American dream in 80’s America yet hates it so much to where he wants to kill which could be the last punchline to the joke. I never really got that American psycho was a satire to begin with. Yeah some parts aren’t supposed to be taken seriously and can be funny, but for the most part I always thought it was a serious cometary on how the elite treat people wrapped up in a slasher film. How Patrick treats and kills others are based off of either his own ego, satisfaction, or just trying to fit in and keep the role that many others try to claw their way into. In real life the elite can do the samethings the difference being that they dont directly kill anyone and that Patrick is made self aware of his crimes. I thought this message was made clear by showing the other elites and Ronald Regan on the tv (who knowingly or not let many die of aids because he and the American government wouldn’t recognize the aids crisis for years) while Patrick is realizing that he will never be convicted of his crimes, alluding that these people are similar to Patrick, causing crime and getting away with it.

Thanks! That's really nice to hear, especially considering I wasn't feeling too confident about this one. I always feel like when I have to talk negatively about something, I need to be extra careful to dot all my "i's" and cross all of my "t's", and that is doubly so when what I have to say is as overtly political as this video got. Thanks again for watching.
