He explicitly states in the song that he love all these guys but on tracks, he's trying to murder them - make sure their fanbase never heard of them. Rap has a history of competition with others around you and the control verse was entirely about that. It was never about starting beef or any form of hatred. Just pure love of rap and the competition that comes along side it. That's why most people mentioned in the control verse liked the song - you can see mostly positive responses from all of them. Drake having a negative response to it, kind of showed everyone that he's an outcast from the start. He's not with the nature of hip hop and how competitive it is and took it personal when that was never what it was.

So when he responds like that, people moreso thought he didn't understand the culture. A lot of discourse around that time mentioned how he was an outcast. Also, pretty much everyone took the Control verse as competition and liked it. Drake singled himself out as salty about it - Kendrick, who is quite a hiphop purist clearly didn't like that. There issues go way beyond that though but that was a start point.
