Pick an album, pick a track and enjoy. Defamation of Strickland Banks should really be listened to as a whole since it's more of a concept album that tells a story. Charmaine, live once ft Kano, no more eatin' and ill manors, would be a few standouts for me. Honestly just an incredible and influential artist.

When I lived in the UK in the late 1980s, I was struck by the DIVERSITY of music that made it into the Top 10 charts from week to week. Here in the US, our hits follow trends (Hip Hop is popular, EDM is popular, Rock is the thing, etc) & that is evidenced in our music charts where one style of music dominates for months on end. Not so in the UK. In the late 80s it was not at all unusual to see Madonna at #1 one week, a parody song performed by the puppets from "Spitting Image" the next week, followed by a hair metal band like Europe, then Aretha Franklin, Mel & Kim, Los Lobos, Rick Astley then MARRS! (I looked up THE actual UK charts from '86 & '87 to compile the preceding lisf, BTW) On any given day, this was the sort of variety of styles you could expect to hear on a Top 40 radio station's playlist! I would not be at all surprised to learn that it's still the same nowadays. You would NEVER hear anywhere CLOSE to this kind of diversity on American Top 40 radio! NEVER! I think it's this kind of diversity among popular music In the UK that produces genre-bending artists like Ren, & the lack of it in the US that makes someone like Ren's ability to shine across so many different genres utterly mind-blowing to us Yanks. The UK has long had a far more vibrant music culture than the US, where record labels & radio stations find a formula & just beat it into the ground, producing cookie-cutter wannabees (no offense, Don 😘) that are nowhere NEAR as talented as the artists that first started the trend. It's how we end up with folks like Vanilla Ice & Nickelback. 🤮

@sodem2810 its exactly like that. There is probably more diversity in music now more so than ever. The charts arent really a thing for singles anymore, its albums. Go there and you get everything. Since the Internet and downloads with algarythams linking one style to another ive heard so much more music. Just so you know I was around in the 70s onwards. Im 51 now

Yes the wigs are a thing! Lawyers that represent clients in court in front of a judge are called barristers and they wear wigs and formal robes. Also, in most cases cameras are barred from the courtroom and sketch artists make sketches of the people in the courtroom to provide media outlets a visual representation of what went on in the courtroom. They’re actually not allowed to sketch in the court so have to do it afterwards from notes they take whilst in attendance.

His entire album 'defamation of strickland banks' tells the story of him sleeping with a woman, her claiming she didn't consent then him going to prison and his struggles whilst there. It's an incredible album and one of my favourites of all time. Ren mentioned in his Justin Hawkins interview that he worked with one of the musicians when he was signed to Sony. The album was a complete switch up for Plan B who was previously known for rap. His song charmaine got me in to him when i was about 16, I'm now 32 😂 I was also a bit intrigued as to what plan b song Ren could have been referencing on Hi Ren and found a thread on Reddit suggesting it could have been 'Everyday' which battles with his daily mental struggles. His album Ill Manors is 🔥 too. My favourite off that is Mr Drug Dealer. Here I am sounding like a crazy fan girl but most of his songs tell a story and are pretty relatable for most brits growing up on a council estate in the 00s. Hope you dig a bit deeper in to him. Love your channel ❤

I'm a massive fan of Plan B, and straight away could see the influence that Plan B had on Ren. A lot of the lyrics for Plan B's 'Who Needs Action When You Got Words and 'ill Manors' might get flagged on YT, not sure, but those two albums are absolute bangerz. The story telling is Ren level, or Ren is Plan B level, they are both next level anyway😂❤ Shout out to my fellow members here, and to #BP and #Don. Love n hugs to y'all🇦🇺

Ren's Tale of Jenny, Screetch and Violet is a three piece thing. Plan B's Defamation of Strickland Banks is similar (but there are a lot more parts to it)- several different songs all in a series, telling a story, It's great! Can highly recommend watching the whole series in order. Yes, the judges and barristers still do wear those wigs in the UK in some of the courts (not the family court). @@merileebleything-md2ju he didn't make it but I read he made it what it is, the gritty feel you get from the scenes were his input helping rewrite the script and make changes while filming, made it more realistic when looking into youth on council estates, when the producers and directors seen his inputs and changes he was making they weren't bitter they praised him for it, it made the film what it is. But that inspired him to write, ill manors, he wrote, directed, and wrote the music for it, then released an album alongside the film that was a huge success, he's a man of many hidden talents, just wish he'd make a comeback

Hey man, nice reaction. I've been re-listening to his album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" since the Ren song too. The album's a whole story too, which is why you see "Strickland Banks" - his character, on the defendant's board in the video. If you fance some more British rap, I'd recommend Scroobius Pip. Another from the 2010s who has some really clever rhymes. "Let em Come" is probably his best known song.

So glad you got around to Plan B. My obsession with Plan B back in the day, now compares to how I'm obsessed with Ren. His first LP "Who needs actions when you've got words' is full rap. Second LP Defamation of Strickland banks Is a concept album which is mainly singing but with rap elements & his 3rd ill manors is a soundtrack to his film with the same name. -- he also has a mixtape called paint it blacker. A lot of his stuff is DARK but I'd definitely love to see more Plan B reactions on the channel ✌️

I'm a barrister (wig wearer) in the UK courts. Yes, they are still worn in high courts purely from tradition. Until the 17th century, lawyers were expected to appear in court with clean, short hair and beards. Wigs made their first appearance in a courtroom purely and simply because that's what was being worn outside it

He is a rapper and he produced a whole movie called ‘Ill Manors’, which through music and rap tells the story of 6. people linked through family and drugs and dirge locked into the unflinching daily grind of survival on the streets of London. It’s a must watch as it shows street life here in the UK, telling the stories through words and music. I watched it so many times. Plan B is the shit, he’s a London Boy. Oh btw, Judges and Barristers (uk High (crown) court Lawyers both wear wigs and gowns . When you see a trial here it’s full on theatre. If you're interested in the UK based genre-bending rabbit hole, Jamie T is worth checking out. Ren seems to be a fan too. Or Goldie Lookin Chain (GLC) for some entirely tongue-in-cheek Welsh hiphop (Ren is a fan again).

You've got to listen to Ill Mannors. It's a song that addresses a lot about UK life that americans are often unaware of and it shows the diversity of his music. Love Plan B.

Hey Mr. Pegasus! You're always super energetic and funny! The wigs do exist still in the UK, but the wooden teeth comment made me burst out laughing. I just heard this song for the first time today, and I wasn't sure what to expect but he was amazing in a unique way. Peace!

So happy your discovering Plan B #BP, you won't regret it and you will get a surprise too, he can also rap, sing, and play guitar lol PS I grew up in the UK, moved to Australia when I was 30, I'm 53 now. I love listening to UK artists, I get a little homesick sometimes.

This album is a heartbreaking... ILL Manors is a as epic and a harsh reality listen. There is a film too that shows a mirror on parts of the UK and it's underbelly.

Looks like Ren has opened the door for lesser known UK artists. One of my favourites is Poalo Nutini from Scotland. I would love to see your reaction to Iron Sky performed live at Abbey Road Studios.

I mean Plan B is not lesser known, he is way, way more famous than Ren in the UK, played mainstage at all the big festivals. Not sure he does much music these days just acting i think

The Hi Ren reference is the fact when Plan b came out on his debut album he rapped over a guitar. Check out Sick 2 Def, No more eating and Couldn’t get along today. The Strickland album was a brilliant album and so was Ill manor’s. I still love his mix tape album Paint it black, so many great songs on that album.

You definitely have to check out his older rap tracks. Suzanne, Paint It Blacker, Charmaine, Dead and Buried, Couldn't Get Along, I Don't Hate You, Mama (loves a Crackhead), No More Eatin', Sick 2 Def. All of these are kinda essential and some are super dark.

YES! Judges, barristers, and lawyers in the UK ALL wear white wigs as a symbol of power and respect for the law & to bring a sense of formality and solemnity to the courtroom. Like the robes the lawyers wear, the wigs are worn as a symbol of anonymity. The wigs are part of a uniform that creates a visual separation between the law and those being brought up before it. Wigs are so much a part of British criminal courts that if a barrister doesn't wear one, it's seen as an insult to the court.
