In Pete & Bas - Golf, Pete's first verse is him going into his history and giving a timeline of events. The final few bars from his verse go like this but you should check it out. (Edit: It also has one of my favourite verses from Bas AND a really good intoduction to Norman Pain (The GOAT)) '96 Stan got nicked, found his stash In the back of the brand new motor Car chase and the whole thing crashed Collecting debts Wars with the London Met '98 case got blown I went home and I cried in bed (Trust me)

Don’t get me wrong I know these guys are legit but you gotta remember their age and the fact that in their era, hip hop wasn’t common place period, is a legitimate reason to be sceptical. It was even less prominent in the uk than the us at their time. It’s also music of black origin and things were a lot more divided back then. So when old people start rapping, it’s gonna raise questions.

This reaction is from Americans that can't fathom that there's a whole other world outside of North America. Instead of just reacting to what they're seeing, they just immediately draw conclusions that something is fake because it's new to them. Not everything is Milli Vanilli or an industry plant. Especially not in the UK rap scene which in comparison is way smaller than the US rap scene

If it was a joke… it comes to a point to where if the music slaps, the bars are on point, they got a catalog of songs and do full hour live sets to hype crowds who are there for it and know all of the lyrics… At that point it ain’t a joke. In fact, to even call what they do a joke then by default puts a whole bunch of other rappers in the same category. Like… on some “if we’re a joke then what are you?” shit. 😂 awesome!

Like…the thing is… you can’t do this in a vacuum. If these guys showed up and were suddenly like expert PGA golfers or NBA players or like perfect at playing cello or something -exhibiting instant expertise that no person can do without spending years and years and years of work, it’d be a Disney movie. That ain’t reality. Right? It just ISN’T. You can’t fake expertise and experience. There’s already some proof that at least Bas was an actor for hire a decade ago. Do some research. The damn truth is this is at least HALF smoke and mirrors, but do we care? I don’t. They’re definitely using their own voices, and my guess is they have input on lingo, ideas, aesthetic, etc.. But there’s no way they can master ANY beat or ANY style of rap so quickly. Even if they had been doing hip hop for decades they’d SOUND LIKE OTHER 80s/90s/00s RAPPERS. CMON NOW. They’re displaying incredibly up to date rhythms, flow, slang, and their ability to hop from flow to flow is just not possible without A) coaching, B) editing, C) writers of some kind. But there’s NOTHING wrong with that. Also, I hate to burst anyone’s bubble, but it you look at the entirety of hip hop that is thematically “gangster” over the last five decades, 95% of it is performative. Because to portray yourself as gangster is shorthand for success and it dovetails with street/hussle culture that’s been around since the 70s. EVEN IF these guys aren’t actually gangsters (I doubt they are, it’s entertaining but really they’re more like caricatures of Brick Top from “Snatch”, right?) then it’s pretty great art for them to be another great hip hop duo that’s performatively “gangster” and great at it. They’re literally no different than any other popular US “gangster” hip hop that’s theatrical. And this is purely entertaining. But really, there’s zero chance this isn’t two dudes REALLY enjoying their newest paid acting gig. Myths can become realities. I love them despite the fact that neither of them has killed anyone. It’s still amazing sh*t

So they claim to write it all themselves with input from their grandkids for lingo and whatnot. Pete's' granddaughter liked drill and she kept playing it in the car and at first he hated it but one day he kind of caught himself and realised it was actually good and decided to give it a try with his friend Bas, a music teacher. As for them being connected they haven't talked about it and the shit about them being connected to the Kray twins came from a news article where the author was joking and some guy read it wrong and spread that shit in youtube comments. That being said they're very clearly working class cockney Londoners, they definitely grew up in rough environment, London was not a chill place in the 60's and 70's, especially in the working class areas. It's worth noting that the UK isn't the US, class plays a bigger part than race when it comes to the hood you grow up in etc, poor white people will be living in the same blocks as poor black and arabic people. Either way as you say, just the fact that they're engaging and able to perform it is so impressive, regardless of their writing it or not.
