Victoria Wood was one of the greats. The first comedian I ever saw live (when I was way too young!) You have to give Barry and Freda a listen, probably her most famous song. She unfortunately doesn’t always get the acclaim she deserves, a la Morecambe and Wise etc. I’m sure someone has already mentioned but she passed away from cancer in 2016 at 62. Gave half her money away to charity in her will, apparently. I’d love to see more reactions from her stuff

You've discovered Our Vic. She's from my town. I love her. She died of Cancer & our town has put up a statue of her & our museum had a year long exhibition dedicated to her life & work. She is sorely missed by all. I met her once when she did a show at the theatre I worked in. I walked into her & she was really shy as am I. I said "Sorry Ms Wood" whilst looking at the floor. She said "S'Ok" whilst looking at the floor. 🤣

She started off singing comic songs, did stand up, sketch shows, wrote a sit-com, wrote plays, appeared in films both comic and straight. She was successful and accomplished at everything she did. If you want a laugh, listen to her singing 'Barry and Freda.' Probably her most famous comic offering. I saw her live twice. Wonderful lady.

It was based on a soap called Crossroads, which was renowned for it's 'budget' sets which moved when people walked in or the camera work which I believe was not always focussing on where it should be.

Oh Squirrel you have absolutely made my day. Victoria Woods is one of my favourites and she was such a talented woman who had so much more to give but was taken all too soon at the age of 62 from cancer in 2016. She was from Bury in Lancashire, which is not far from where the likes of Peter Kay and Fred Dibnah hail from. I still find it hard to think she has gone. Thank you for doing this.

She was incredible - talented funny and a great actress as well. She wrote a series once ,called Acorn ,which was a spoof on cheap tv productions, lack of continuity, and everything else that could go wrong like deliberate wobbly sets ! It's worth a look ! Yes she is sadly missed and loved by all. Her screen partner was a lady called Julie Walters who appeared in lots of her stuff but excelled in the series " Dinner Ladies " which was about a factory canteen. That series is a classic ! PS. see if you can find a you tube vid of her rendition of a song she wrote and sang while accompanying herself on the piano - it's called the Ballad of Barry and Freda ! - very clever and funny !

Victoria Wood was an absolute comic genius as well as a serious drama scriptwriter that would have you weeping tears of laughter at the characters in a drama one minute and in the next, those laughter tears would become tears of sadness She often portrayed characters who had, what you would call “social difficulties” - developed by her writing and her acting abilities you didn’t laugh AT these people or mock their difficulties, you would end up understanding them and wanting to fight for them, all the inequalities they tolerated, on their behalf I, like many people, wept when I heard of her passing, declaring it completely unfair and “wrong”. She was quote - one of our “national treasures” and loved by many if not all…RIP Victoria - yes, you WERE loved, so very very much…😥😥

The beauty about VWs comedy is that it will stick in your mind so that the next time you go into a health food shop you will notice the bad skin and the chap looking like he's waiting for a sex change. Brilliantly observed and superbly recounted. Her self-penned Dinner Ladies remains my all-time favourite sit com and her dramatic works, especially Housewife 49, will always get watched whenever I see it on the listings, despite having watched it at least 10 times. RIP Victoria - the world is a sadder place without you.

I think Victoria passed away 2016 she kept her cancer to herself very few knew she was ill, even some patients at the hospital didn't recognise her, Victoria was extremely private, and all her work has come from her life experiences and others, she worked with Dame Julie Walters, they were great friends from the 1970's and Victoria wrote a TV film about Morecambe and Wise which she played Eric Morecambe mum, another called Pat and Margaret, Victoria Wood As Seen On TV, and Dinnerladies, along with others. Victoria sold out The Royal Albert Hall twice, I think both runs were for 15 days and that's 8000 people in the audience each time

Vic' was taken from us tragically young. cancer. Genuine talent. massive influence on most of todays female comics. Catherine Tate, for example cites the characters of Victoria as direct inspirations for some of her own. Victoria was an expert of 'nice' comedy. she didn't go out of her way to shock people or upset people. just to make us all feel a bit better.

Victoria Wood was absolutely brilliant, look for 'Acorn Antiques' - a snippet here, kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4HGkIirgdCtmpo note the intended appalling direction of the camera and errors in the speech, it is a joke because a famous tv serial called 'Crossroads' had notoriously creaky sets and mistakes; it is an absolute hoot. Victoria also wrote and starred in 'dinnerladies' which was set in a factory canteen and was hilarious with her pithy humour, one of the best. A missed British comedian and actress.
