Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through KZbin videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. The Greek Royal family were a branch of the Danish Royal family. When the Greeks needed a king in the 1860s they originally wanted Queen Victoria's son Alfred, but this was too controversial for the power balance in Europe. So they got Prince William of Denmark, the younger brother of Princess Alexandra, later Edward VII's Queen. William, who was 17 at the time became King George I of Greece (Perhaps they thought George sounded more Greek!), and was Prince Philip's grandfather.

Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon later became Queen Elizabeth as the wife of King George VI. She was the mother of our late Queen Elizabeth II and affectionately called Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother during her daughter's reign. A truely remarkable person. During the second world war Hitler referred to her as the most dangerour woman in Europe.

A Mews is a narrow street behind very smart houses. They were stables and coach houses, they became garages when cars turned up. Now they are extreamly expencive houses and are lovely and interesting roads, a lot of Victorian roads and you get them in citys like Edinburgh, Glasgow and many more. I lived in a very Victorian village we had lanes behind the houses. There was stables and coach storage net to the train station, so a house would send a servent to get there coach deliverd, you could see it all.

A Mews is a stable-yard, but originally it was where Hunting birds, Falcon's etc were housed. The first car is a Rolls Royce, identified by the distinctive radiator design, & the figure of a Lady on the top. Elizabeth Bowes Lyon was the late Queen Elizabeth's mother, known to us as the Queen Mother. All European Royalty are descended from Queen Victoria. Denmark has an old Monarchy, the Greek Monarchy is much more recent, & a branch of the Danish line was chosen. That is why Philip Duke of Edinburgh was tall & blonde, not short & dark. There are 2 types of Ton weights, quite different to each other. There is the Metric Tonne of 1 thousand Kilos, that is 2204 lbs, & the Imperial British Ton of 2240 lbs. Then there is the American Ton of 2 thousand lbs. The British & American pounds are the same weight. I guess Mark is using the British Ton for these coaches.

Hi Connor. The biggest clues that define a Rolls Royce are the front grill (which is a bit like a Greek temple), and the mascot that tops the grill, a female figure called the 'Spirit of Ecstasy'. That said, royal cars occasionally have the Rolls mascot replaced with a 'personal' alternative. When you briefly asked if the Rolls Royce in the video was a Volkswagen, I think you had spotted badges mounted on the front bumpers, particularly the one with the AA symbol. The AA stands for 'Automobile Association' - formed in 1905, it is now the UKs biggest membership-based roadside breakdown recovery organisation, but also provides a range of other services to the general public (from vehicle insurance to driving lessons). Most Royal 'state' cars are custom-built limousines so don't look like the sort that 'Joe public' drive around in (which in 2024 have starting prices, depending on model type, that range between US$340,000 and US$390,000). Interestingly, the two principal 'State Limousines' aren't Rolls Royces, but 'Bentleys', given to the Queen by the company to mark her Golden Jubilee. As a side note, although the Rolls Royce 'brand' is now owned by BMW, and Bentley by Volkswagen (I think), they are still designed and manufactured in the UK.

I remember being in London a few days before the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. We were walking along the Mall when the Gold State Coach went past on a rehearsal for the procession. Even at 7 years old I was so impressed by it.

I was in The Mall at the coronation. My Mum had seen the gold state coach in the Mews and had prepared me for how big it is. Even then I actually swore when i saw It as it passed by! It's beyond description level impressive. I can't begin to describe how breathtaking it is.

All my family worked in cotton mills and I grew up in that era . Absolutely right northern women of that era were strong intelligent and hard working . Well done

I think the name 'mews' has a very long history. My very possibly faulty memory is that falcons 'mew' when they moult. ( There are other terms we nowadays use from falconry, e.g. 'haggard'. A young, or moulting, falcon?) So the Royal Mews was originally was where the monarchs kept their falconry; but centuries ago they started to use it to keep their horses. Fashionable London started to have mews attached to their houses. Now these Iittle yards have fabulously-expensive small houses by them, converted from the stables.

Yeah think of them as a row of garages at the rear of a property before the invention of the motorcar. They would have Stables and carriage at ground level and coaching staff living on the floor above. After the decline of horse and carriage ownership rows of mews found a second life as workshops for small businesses and artists studios, then in expensive neighbourhoods they were converted to fashionable (due to their bohemian association) compact homes more affordable than the larger houses they once served.

Not necessarily. The roads weren't hard paved as they are today. It's too hard on the horses' feet. They were laid in a sandy material, similar texture to country lanes/footpaths. Id be surprised if the carts are much louder than motor vehicles.

and all the manure and urine, crossing the road was a nightmare, young pauper lads swept a path across streets for wealthy pedestrians who then tipped them, there was a lot of competition. Selling the piles of manure from stables was a “perk” for the grooms in London, it went to many market gardeners, some carriages had buckets attached to collect the manure, some of it was collected by paupers who risked being trampled by the carriages, just to keep themselves out of the Workhouse ☹️

I have a commemorative coin and a small piece of wood from H.M.S. Victory. Now and again the Victory has maintenance work done and there is always old timber removed to make the structure sound. I believe only the no 3 gundeck is original of the decks and it is clear to see at least when i visited Victory about 20 years ago.

The Gold State Coach wasn't photographed much from the side here. When you see it in the real, you can't take in just how MASSIVE it is!! As it moves along, you can see the body of it swaying about. It really is like a ship!!! It's also hard to take in just how much GOLD there is on it!! It is almost entirely covered with gold. It's like a fairy tale carriage!! Hi. A younger son of King Christian IX of Denmark was asked by the Greek Government to be their monarch (being a younger Prince of Denmark it was thought unlikely that there would ever be a conflict by him inheriting the Danish throne too). Therefore the Greek royal family also reference their Danish royal titles. King George I of The Hellenes, as he became, had a seventh child, and fourth son, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark. His 5th child and only son was born His Royal Highness Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, but gave up his Greek and Danish royal titles when he became engaged to Her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth of York and he became a naturalised UK citizen. He was given the royal dukedom of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh by His Majesty King George VI the day before his marriage, but it was Elizabeth (once she was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II) who gave her husband the title of Prince. The Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon he mentioned earlier was Queen Elizabeth II’s mother.

Well, they are really pretty but you should definitely check out the coaches of the Habsburg emperors in the Wagenburg at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. These imperial coaches are even more imposing.

Lady Bowes Lyon the Queen mother..Also mother to Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. I love to imagine carriages in the olden days. Foot warmers, cloaks and fur muffs on the freezing winters, I am also fascinated by the expiditions to the Poles in horrific conditions.😮

I remember when we had regular visits from the rag and bone man who used a horse and cart - my mother always armed herself with a shovel as soon as she heard the cry "rag and bonnne!" and raced our neighbours to collect the presents left by the horse. She was very good at grabbing the spoils and we had great roses!

Greece wanted to set up a monarchy, and the second son of the King of Denmark was invited to become King (not sure of the date). Prince Philip was a descendant, and therefore a Prince of Greece and Denmark. He was born on Corfu and he and his family had to flee the country when he was still a baby as Greece decided to get rid of the monarchy. I suggest you look at a video on Prince Philip's life and hopefully it will explain it in more detail. The two cars you pointed were Rolls Royces. Apart from the design, a recognisable feature of the vehicles is the little 'statue' on the bonnet, called Phantom.
