Fun fact about the island of Visingsö mentioned at 13:20 The king ordered a oak forest to be planted on the Island, after the loss of Swedens german land in Pommerania where most of the oaks used for shipbuilding came from, so that the Navy would have an ample supply of oak for centuries. This was in 1831. When it was time to harvest the first ones, in 1974 the Navy politly declined since no one made wooden ships anymore. They're now used for restaurations projects of historical royal and government property instead (the new oak used for the restauration of the Vasa is from here).

Swedish meatballs existed in Sweden long before Charles XII was visiting Turkey and the similar things they had there is not even round and have the same spices, very different. What that king though brought to Sweden was Dolme or as we call it Kåldolmar. You could also see in the video a skyscraper named Turning Torso in Malmö as said to be the highest in Scandinavia, the highest now is a new skyscraper in Gothenburg called Karlatornet which even is the highest in whole northern Europe.

Pronounciation of Malmö; to get an idea of how the ”ö” is pronounced you can say it kind of like how you pronounce the two first letters when you say ”Earl Grey” (the tea😊). A lot of english speaking-people pronounce ”ö” the same way as an ”o” and these are two completely different letters/sounds☺️

8:59 - he really should have mentioned that those mounds are said to be the burial sites of Odin, Thor and Freyr. In folklore. Actual historical evidence though suggests it was three different kings. The vikings used to travel from all over Scandinavia there for sacrifices. It had the biggest pagan temple. The church is built right on top where it was (obviously...).

How nice to see more of my part of the country and not just Lappland as one place. Recommend Kungsleden for hiking, easy trails and cabins, at least in the beginning with stunning views. There is also a lot of short trails around Tärnaby and Hemavan, suitable for a daytrip. Stekenjokk area from Klimpfjäll down to then county of Jämtland with waterfalls and Ankarede kyrkplats is beautiful, or Ammarnäs if you prefere a more quiet stay, all with nice trails for hiking.

Swede here Yes the big Ski resorts are against the Norwegian border in the scandinavian mountain range but there are smaller ski resorts elsewhere as well like Järvsö and Kungsberget. Which are closer to the coast but benefit from being Closer to Stockholm making day trips possible.

16th century Gustav Vasa broke Sweden free from Denmark and is known for his skiing by "vasaloppet" (skirace 90Km) & "Regalskappet Vasa" (sits in a museum). 17th century Gustav II Adolf (Lion from the north & Founder of modern warfare) fought the Catholics in the HRE (basically Germany today) 18th century Karl XII (Carolus Rex) fought Russia & Peter the great and brought meatballs from Moldova (at the time Ottoman empire). Malmö can actually be divided into 2, conjugated words: Malm-ö = ore-island & Mal-mö = moth-lady. in 2001 I actually travelled on a ferry between Sweden & Denmark below the bridge when it was under construction. Best way to travel this bridge-tunnel is by train, many workers commute to work in the other country this way.

Sweden is of course much bigger now and it was the capital of Västra Götaland (West Gothia). In the middle of the town there is a cathedral that is now roughly 870 years old. Viking culture: You find it in all the nordic countries but you could separate them a bit and get the overall idea by saying that the danes were the politicians, the empire builders. The norwegians were the bezerks, the no 1 warriors. The swedes were the traditionalists, keepers of pre-christian religion, traders with the perhaps strongest roots to the preceding empire from the bronze age (this was the richest part of europe back in Minoan days). The Icelanders were the refugees from the supressive empire builders of the danes and norwegians. The Finns were part of it but with "mixed roots", Scandinavia were populated from two directions, from the south and from the north. In mid-area Sweden the most obvious blending took place. Then, with better boats, people travelled across the Baltic sea and extended into Novgorod/today west Russia. What is true for one is true for all but if you want to see the differences, you could give them these "specialities".

In the end, it really doesn’t matter much that we don’t have a northern coast. If we need to export our northern iron ore through ship, there’s a railway to a convenient Norwegian port. Abisko and Kungsleden are up in Swedish Lapland and then Jukkasjrvi which is a village without the suburb Kiruna, which is my hometown. In Kiruna, the toughest and toughest soldiers in Sweden are trained and only the best of the best are accepted to attend the training. Then it was called the LaplandRanger regiment, currently Laplandrangergrupp. But the Lapland ranger regiment will be built up again and American soldiers will also be here and receive proper winter training, mainly the US Marine Corps. For the pictures they showed of Abisko, the Kungsleden and the surrounding mountains are the Lapland Rangers' areas as we are mountain soldiers.

I can be wrong but I don’t believe the border of Finland ever went up to the Arctic sea. It didn’t when what is now Finland was the eastern half of Sweden. In 1809, when eastern Sweden was lost to Russia, there was a piece of Norway and Russian land between Sweden and the sea. Maybe if there were changes to the borders between 1809 and 1939 that I’m not aware of. Finland wasn’t formed until 1917 when claimed independent from Russia so if Finland had a coastline in the north, it must have been taken from either her Norway or Russia after that.

Never trust a native english speaker to get it right, wqhen you try to learn something. examples: gamla stan (pronounced: gum-la-stan (like kasachstan)) "malma" does not exist, its friggin malmö (and the ö often refers to some form of island) , and yes dear americans the funny dots mean the sound is different from an o without funny dots, you cannot just ignore the dots and hope its similar enough, because it isnt - the dots exist for a reason. Same for å /Å - it is not an A-sound, it is an O-sound in this case - basically the series "stargåte" sound to swedish speakers very funny Stargote .. lol.. i still think its funny) ....want to get pronounciations right? then ignore all that this american tourist narrator tells you. ps: finnland had a piece of arctic sea coast, until the russians stole it in the winter war

1:40 You are right about old towns and cities in Europe. But new areas are just as ugly and boring as in the US, if not worse. This has largely been the case all the way back to the 1930s, or 1940s (WWII), depending on country. The "social democrats" and similar in north European countries were totally into that so called "modernist" (read socialist) top down planning. This was also common in the Sovjet and adopted by huge opportunistic concrete companies working even in the the USA. The architects were brain washed into this mentality and most politicians still know nothing but the uniform and totalitarian minded. They still love to tear down "petit burgeouis" (sic) houses and buildings whenever they can.

I wonder if you have travelled enough in the US to be able to make this comparison. People I know who have usually have a very different opinion. Their saying that its much better in Europe than in the US. And in Western Europe the general standard is also much higher, there’s more parks and green areas also in the suburbs etc. . And yes there was a point in time when there was a severe lack of housing in for an ex Sweden and there was a lot of old houses that were in really really bad shape so they did tear down too much of that to create a vast amount of new modern apparments with runing water, indoor bathrooms etc (which a lot of people had never had back then and were really happy and grateful for). Some socialdemocrats associated the old houses with severe poverty and the extremely low standard that a lot of people lived with/had lived with throughout their lives. So they had good intentions but I agree that they went to far. (At the same time I think some of those old houses were in such bad shape it wouldnt have been possible to restore them.) Today most politicians talk about the great value in keeping and restoring older buildings. If anything was totalitarian it was the societies we had in the begining of the 1900’s and before that, before socialdemocrates hade any power, when only a small part of the population were allowed to vote and most people lived under very tough conditions with very little power over their lives.

@@memoblom2112 The architecture is often better in Europe, at least in the cities (villas is another matter). But it's despite socialism, not thanks to it (as some Euro-loving americans tend to belive). All of the charming quarters existed *before* socialism took over in the 1930s...

I think its wrong to blame socialism for this. Its cheaper to build similar houses everywhere. To get new materials, new balconies, colours and so on is to expensive. Yes socialism did have implications ones, but today I think it is just straight up the market.

@@lovisalindstrom7920 So the actual truth is "wrong" to speak about, if it harms the holy socialists... Study the history! Very few people do nowadays, unfortunately, but that's what I did. If you cannot find the good books, the evidence for what I said are easily found in stadsarkiv and landsarkiv!
