It may have been said already. But Scotland was uninhabitable for a long time as it was completely covered in ice - around 15,000 years ago the globe began to warm during the younger dryas period. This melted the ice and changed the geological landscape of Britain. Not long afterwards, the land bridge to Europe known as ‘Doggerland’ was overtaken by the ocean to form the North Sea. These events would all play a part in seeing the eventual success of those residing on the British isles, several millennia’s in the making. 🏴🇬🇧 I think

@squirepraggerstope359111 ай бұрын
Er... a few errors but otherwise not bad. In fact, both Scotland and England were uninhabited at the last glacial maximum, as the ice sheet covering what're now the British Isles stretched south beyond what's now the Thames valley. So what later became England's south coast was also uninhabitable given its proximity and consequent vile climate. Re the Younger Dryas, it was actually a c1,000 year period from about 12,800 to 11,800 years BP that saw significant cooling and a partial return to glacial conditions, so the warming you mention occurred BEFORE the YD, was reversed during it, then resumed afterwards.

Scotland isn't allowed to become a free independent republic by England. The English forbid it, and overrule the elected Scottish Parliament. Some fool will possibly be along shortly to say that I'm wrong, but consider these things: to be a democracy a country should be able to choose their head of state; a country should have self determination to be a member of organisations or unions such as the EU, NATO or the EEA, Scotland is denied these choices, in fact with the Brexit vote, it was the only nation of the 4 in the UK which wasn't allowed its choice, England & Wales were allowed their choice to leave, Northern Ireland chose to remain and is still in the EU, Scotland chose to remain and wasn't allowed to remain being forced out against the will of the nation, the 3rd thing is having an elected government where the Scottish Government, elected by the people of Scotland, make a decision which is voted for by each party in Scotland, isn't overturned by the parliament in England. That is dictatorship, not democracy. The UK is in the final spluttering breath of imperialism, soon to expire as Ireland reunites, Wales & Scotland becoming independent very soon afterwards. The 8.7 trillion pounds of external debt that the UK has, is all owed from London, so England will soon be making Greece look like a gold plated economy under the terms of being the successor state.

Scotland now has the lowest life expectancy in Europe, its education system is in a terrible state by comparison , it’s drug problem is out of control , this despite Westminster Public spending being roughly 15% higher for Scotland, Ireland and Wales compared to spending on the English . The desire for Scottish independence has drastically declined in recent times due to the appalling performance of the Scottish National Party . Interesting too that their desire was to become independent from the UK and then immediately seek membership of the EU , a much larger dictatorship in which it would hold very little influence . It also does not meet economic and other thresholds to join the Eu nor to adopt the Euro currency so having become independent from the UK would need to form its own currency which it currently lacks the ability to do.

Hi Conor. The Tower of London is not the oldest structure in London. There are a number of churches in London that are older and parts of the old city walls still exist dating back to 190-225 AD, built by the Romans who first settled London in about 43 AD (or Londinium as they called it).
@bartholomewswarmkrunsh3859 Жыл бұрын
“King” Arthur? He means King Alfred. The first mention of an Arthur is in the 9th Century by a Welsh monk and the accuracy of this work is questionable. He describes battles in which Arthur lead the Britons (not the "English"), but as a chieftain or commander rather than a king. He may have been from what is now known as Wales. It was only in later years when the “King” Arthur myth took hold, particularly in the 12-13th centuries, during the Tudor period and again in Victorian era. If he existed, it was probably around the 6th century - everything else about the story is fabrication. Camelot and the Knights of the round table were invented in the 12th Century to bolster the myth and in the 13th century the castle of Tintagel was built by King John’s son as the fictionalised birth place of Arthur. King Alfred is much more interesting (and factual too).

I've never heard of Loc Ness - the word is Loch. The Celtic invasion is under considerable scrutiny at the moment. Some skeletons were found at a Neolithic site in Wales, and DNA samples were taken from the remains , and compared with kids at the local Primary School. The results showed that the kids, Welsh-born, shared a lot of DNA with what could only have been their Neolithic ancestors. The tower of London was constructed as garrison, arsenal and palace, after William the Conqueror was crowned at Westminster Abbey.

Languages and accents got a shout but no mention of dialects. In England there's Geordie, Scouse, Mancunian, Brummie, and cockney among others while Scottish dialects include Weegie, Doric, and Buchan Claik to name a few

To be fair; he actually nailed the Scottish accent. Well from a Dutch perspective, but they say we sound like Sean Connery when we speak English, so...

Incidentally, many years ago when I stayed in Italy I met a fellow Scot in a crowded pub, and we both chatted for a bit. Afterwards, every single Italian I talked with was confused as to why two Scotsmen spoke to each other in Dutch as opposed to English. It was only then I realised how divergent the Scots language is to English.

@@laziojohnny79 sorry man I want to engage in good faith with you , but the whole concept of a Lazio fan from the Netherlands is beyond coincidental in light of the details of my own anecdote. The only Scots/Dutch similarity coming to mind is Kirk/kerke(sp?). I'm sure there's plenty. I'd wager that loch in Dutch resembles its Scots equivalent more so than either word does with the English 'lake'
@laziojohnny79 Жыл бұрын
@@AquarianAgeApostle There is very little similarity other then the accent when (many) Dutch people speak English, which to some is similar to the Scottish accent, apparently. The fact I'm a Laziale is pure and utter coincedence.

'loch' in Dutch would become 'meer', contrary to German where it would become 'See', and 'See' being 'zee' (sea) in Dutch and vice versa.

Yea, I did the history part for this video. I’d be happy to go over errors with you guys, plus I can give some perspective. Growing up in Scotland, the history curriculum has revolved heavily around the country which has made me view the history in a very one-sided manner, leading to my mentions of English invasions of Scotland, when there were in fact invasions both ways. I didn’t mention the English Colonies specifically because I was given the go-ahead by Mr. Beat really just to talk about the Island of Great Britain itself, and the union between the two countries at the time, so the colonialism part was sort of an afterthought. Also I’d like to apologise for the King Arthur bit. I meant to say King Alfred, but I wrote it down wrong in the script and it was an error that somehow got through. I take responsibility for that, though I’d say it’s clear from the context I gave that it meant Alfred. The script likely has a few errors since I was doing exams while writing it, and it was a fairly limited timeframe. Of course a huge thanks to Mr. Beat for having me, though I do feel that I could have done a better job. With that said, I feel some of you guys are kind of overreacting, so just wanted to give a bit of context. Thanks for having me lol

The legendary King Arthur was NOT Anglo-Saxon, but a figure from BRYTHONIC (Welsh/Cornish/Strathclyde) history/folklore/myth and supposedly the sub-Roman Briton leader who in fact, fought against the Anglo-Saxons in the mid to later 5th Century. Thereby putting a temporary stop to their gradual conquest/colonisation of the former Roman lands and E coast area that later respectively became England and SE Scotland.

The Kingdom of England came into existence in 927. It was nothing to do with King Arthur! Charles I's supporters were *not* mainly Catholic and Charles I was not a Catholic himself either: he was an anglican and is still temembered in the calendar of the Church of England as a martyr.

King Arthur was a composite made up of King Ryderrach Hael of Strathclyde and the Dalriadic King Constantine who controlled the lands of Argyll. He existed before Columba forged Scotland into a single nation. The name Arthur means Dux Belorum or war leader. The Battle of Arderydd or Airdrie, to give it its modern title, was a battle fought by the Christian Arthur with the Pictish pagans led by the Druid Mydrinn known to history by the name Merlin. Merlin became a prisoner of Rydderach Hael (Arthur) at his fortress on Dumbarton Rock, the actual birthplace of St. Patrick who had, many years before, been kidnapped as a teenager by Irish raiders who sailed up the River Clyde. Rydderach Hael was the father of St. Enoch mother of St. Mungo named Kentigern by the Welsh who had fled to exile in Wales in order to avoid the pagan King Coel who wished to have him killed . He returned to Glasgow after Coel died and met Columba there. Ancient Britain or Strathclyde was the real location for the Arthurian myths that were later plagiarised by English writers as were the tales of Robin Hood that were based on the historical William Wallace.

English people say "isle" too, it's just short for island, I'm not sure what his point was there. Ever heard of the Isle of Wight? England's most famous and largest island I think, it's a county in its own right (Although it used to be part of Hampshire, and some weirdos, including Jay Foreman apparently, dismiss the modern counties entirely and thus think it's still part of Hampshire)

Like England Scotland has a diverse array of accents 😂 most people assume we all speak the same because a large portion is from Glasgow, but head 10 minutes in any direction outside of Glasgow and you'll find a different accent every time. I live in the lowlands but my family originally are from the Highlands, and we more sing our words than have a harsh blunt tone. The accent is so varied I've had other Scots ask if I was English, nah just serenading you man 😂
