FYI Connor - The Samaritans is a UK charity that provides a 24 hour help line for people in distress. It is often referred to as the 'suicide help line'. It provides a much admired service and people who work for the Samaritans do so on a voluntary basis. Mrs Richards is played by Joan Sanderson an excellent actress who had many roles on stage and screen. She died in 1992 aged 79.

I read somewhere that the line "that doesn't work either" after she rang the desk bell, was actually improvised by the actress who played Mrs. Richards. It's one of my favourite lines. It's just genius.

I´m a swede and in Sweden we love brittish humor. This series was enormously popular in Swden and still is. Back in the 1970;s a swedish movie was made for TV that got very popular in the UK. Så I guess it must be possible to find it with english subtitles or maybe dubbed to english. The name of it was "Vi hade i alla fall tur med vädret" (At least we had nice weather), It´s about an average swedich family on vacation in their mobile home (trailer house). I think it would make even americans laugh. Try to find on the YT and make a reaction video about it

Lovely interview with Prunella Scales and Tim West on Radio 4 the other day. She's 91 and suffering from vascular dementia, but was still on terrific form.

The best episode IMO. Mrs Richards is brilliant.

After Mrs. Richards bumps her head in the hotel office, Basil picks up a bit of something from off the floor and asks, "Is this a piece of your brain?" John Cleese was going to cut this joke before the show aired, but Andrew Sachs convinced him to leave it in. (It gets one of the biggest laughs from the audience for this episode.) John Cleese was very good friends with Joan Sanderson. He specifically wrote the role of Mrs. Richards for her. She was very reluctant to take the role as she is the polar opposite of the character and felt bad for being so miserable. This is the exact reason why Cleese wanted her to play the part. He convinced her to take the part. Cleese was delighted with her performance and stated this is his favorite episode of the series.

John Cleese spoke very highly of Joan Sanderson (Rs Richards), he said she was a very likeable lady, totally the opposite of the character shepayed here. I think you can tell he liked her, there are little clues.

Joan Sanderson who played Mrs Richards was one of Britain's finest Shakespearean stage actresses of the 20th Century, particularly adapt at playing abrasive women.

Some of the best lines in any sitcom in this episode such as "The Samaritans were engaged" For those that don't know The Samaritans is a helpline you ring if you feel suicidal. I've given up addressing Connor, as he's obviously too busy to react to comments.

SO PLEASED you are starting to react to the later series of FT. Enjoy! I think Mrs. Richards was one of the best, if not the best, acted guest stars in the series. One of those characters you'd like to hate but at the same time, you don't hate.

Samaritans is a registered charity aimed at providing emotional support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide throughout the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, often through its telephone helpline. Its name derives from the biblical Parable of the Good Samaritan although the organisation itself is not religious.
