The cannons are "Muzzle Loaded" , They are on wheels so when fired they will roll back, Allow you access to the muzzle for reloading, Also notice they are at the bottom of a slight ramp. When fired the recoil will drive the the cannon "Uphill" raising the height of the barrel, this will make for easier/faster reloading, and easier/faster repositioning back into it's firing position as you will then be pushing "Downhill",

It’s a fortress not a castle that is why it is called Fort George, I visited a number of years ago. It is still an army base. There is a separate area for ammunition etc on the other side of the fortress. Dan Snow’s father Peter was also a tv presenter. I walked through the Sally port when I visited. I had a photo taken in one of the pepper pots.

Sally port where soldiers would rush out, is probably the origin of sally forth, to rush at the enemy.

Merry Xmas Connor. (Good Celtic name) I have worked at Ft George many times, as a Soldier and as a Warrant Officer. I lived in the 'very expensive boarding school' buildings. The accommodation was good and was well looked after. It was always strange to be going about your normal daily tasks and coming across groups of tourists, every now and then. It has an excellent museum, showing the living quarters as they used to be and the magnificent armoury. (Spelled correctly 😊) Well worth a visit, if you ever get there. Dan Snow, is a renowned staunch Unionist and relishes any opportunity to wave the Union Jack. He is not at all liked, by those Scots, looking for Independence. Just look at his face as he describes any defeat of the Jacobites.

yo man, seeing as you liked the Clarkson VC documentaries, although not done by HistoryTV I would recommend even just for your own viewing pleasure in your spare time. (the 3 parts are uploaded by different channels on KZbin if you want to check them out for your own viewing) its in 3 40 minute parts, empire, the great war and the modern age, the first one really covers the early adoption and evolution of the cross a bit more but the stories in each are where its at which I feel you will enjoy.

Dan, this is Dan Snow - he is one of the best know historians in the UK, and makes many programmes on British history. He is the son of a very famous newsreader on the BBC, now retired. You are doing very well Connor in your learning about British history.... don't forget if you need any explanation on anything, there are thousands of people here who will explain anything you want.

Cannons have wheels to deal with the recoil. When a cannon is fired, the cannon ball gains forward momentum and the cannon gains backward momentum. Before the cannon is fired the total momentum is zero. This is because neither object is moving. The total momentum of the cannon and the cannon ball after being fired is also zero, with the cannon and cannon ball moving in opposite directions. If the cannon did not have wheels, it would be blown off whatever it is resting on.

Dan Snow has done some interesting historical stuff over the years. One interesting video you might like is Dan Snow video called an introduction to the Royal Hospital Chelsea about the iconic British Chelsea pensioners. It has a few very interesting historical things in the video

You are often too harsh on yourself Connor, and inclined to criticise yourself! Your mind likes to analyse, and this is good. You do very well in understanding these programmes.

Cannons have wheels on them so they can be wheeled back so they can be reloaded.

No, it is more to deal with the recoil from the cannon. When a cannon is fired, the cannon ball gains forward momentum and the cannon gains backward momentum. Before the cannon is fired, the total momentum is zero. This is because neither object is moving. The total momentum of the cannon and the cannon ball after being fired is also zero, with the cannon and cannon ball moving in opposite directions. So if the cannon did not have wheels, it would be blasted backwards from whatever it was resting on.

Fort George will close and be decommissioned as a British Military Base in 2032 and will be handed over the Scottish Government, Police Scotland and Historic Environment Scotland if and when Scotland were to gain independence Fort George was to be renamed Gearastan Deòrsa and also one optional location for the new Scottish Defence Force HQ.

So much incredible graffiti at my cathedral going as far back as the 1600s. Makes you wonder how much free time they had to chisel away at the church wall lol. Even tombs of kings have old graffiti on them. Some political, some are just "john was here 1603" lmao

From a Scottish perspective that fort is the epitome of English oppression. A massive reminder to the local people you’re not free. I watched the original documentary with Dan gushing over the achievement this fort was, with no regard to the people it oppressed. Unruly north he quotes. Maybe the north didn’t want to be ruled by their king.

Its history a bygone era, that's what happened in those far off days. History never ends its go's on and on. like time. There will become a time when this is accepted as history. Like in several thousands of year when this island will be given another name by the different populations that will take over this Island and call it their home, this is just a snapshot in time. time that will stretch into the unforseen future. thats if human kind still exists. As we similarly look back into the ancient bible stories now. fascinating thought.
