I've often been asked "What do you think of last nights' match" by people who falsely assumed that I watched it & have an opinion of it. I don't even know which sport they're talking about, let alone who played who & when. They ask me what I was doing yesterday evening. When I say that I was watching sitcoms, they look at me as though I'm from an alien species that's just landed from another planet.

The joke you might be missing is that Europe is obsessed with football. There's always some "important" match going on. Then it manages to infiltrate the news, and when the news shows are over, you get the sports shows, which are actually about a single sport. You guessed it, football. And as a dual citizen of Britain and Portugal, I can tell you, Britain is not even close to being the worst at this, in Portugal, Spain, Italy, sometimes it feels like there's nothing else, football is on all the time, it dominates every conversation. Which team do you support is frequently one of the first things you get asked when you meet someone.
@davidz3879

I've been asked which team I support, many times, since early childhood. They haven't considered the possibility that I don't. They're baffled - and sometimes hostile as well - when I say I don't.

Spot on. Also, unlike in America, where you have your independent NFL/NBA/MLS organisation with their respective seasons always with the same teams, in Europe we have federated sport leagues in every country with endless divisions, and the. different European leagues, cups, league cups and then National teams competing against each other. In addition to the actual sport there is a whole business side of things too you need to follow in order to understand why teams are performing the way they are or how they will perform in the future as well as constant changes in format, prize money, sponsorships, signings... total insanity!
@OblivionGate
@OblivionGate 2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree, England is just as obsessed with football as Spain, Italy or Portugal. England has the longest running football show in the world with Match of the Day, the English Premier League is broadcast to more people than any league in the world. England has the most fans attending games other than Germany of any league in the world. England has the most history of football of any country in the world. England has the oldest teams of any county in the world. England has the oldest league in the world, England has the oldest Cup competition of any country in the world. England played the very first international match. England invented and wrote the rules of football. Everyone in England supports a team to some degree. England fans are notorious for being the loudest and most passionate on the road. England breathes football. Its not a coincidence that England has the best league in the world, its because of the atmosphere at games all across the country every week. England always has football on TV, the FA Cup was on both BBC and ITV this year. Most football is on a subscription service nowadays so it's not on terrestrial TV, so making a statement like you did is hard to judge without the figures. England is just as obsessed with football as any other country, shit we even have songs in the charts about football! 3 Lions, Vindaloo etc. England loves football. And when you say Britain you mean you're a dual citizen of the UK and Portugal, you can't be a dual citizen of Britain, as Britain is just England, Wales and Scotland which doesn't exist as a dual nationality status. Don't just make up stuff which you obviously have... People will find you out.

@@OblivionGate Not claiming there are less fans in England, also because population wise, there's a lot more of it than say Portugal. Also not denying that stadium attendance is much higher, as in Portugal, Spain, or Italy, financial conditions cause people to often watch the matches on the TV. What I'm saying is that in England there's a lot more going on, while in those countries football dominates society almost completely. If you think England is the only one that has football songs reaching the top, you're very much mistaken, at least in Portugal there's been a handful of them, and if you ask people, most will still be able to sing for example the one that was made for Mexico 86. Regarding the citizenship, do you have a passport? Just read what's written there. It says "British Passport" not "UK Passport", nor "English Passport". You call yourself whatever you want, your passport will call you British.

@@OblivionGate Ok mate... we get it, you are English. But I can tell you... it's not the same. As someone who has lived in Spain, I can 100% assure you it's another level over there... you cant ubderstand (I cant talk about Italy/Portugal because I've never lived there). In the UK there is good coverage of the sport, but in Spain it's more than just the sport, it's politics, gossip, drama... just to give you an idea a "clasico" comes with at least 2-3 weeks of pre-game controversy/chat/windup/news/gossip and another 2/3 weeks post-game. Endless talk shows, gossip shows... hundreds of hours of content around one match... also, just for you to understand the scale of things the biggest newspaper in the country (MARCA) is exclusively dedicated to football.

@coot1925

This is so true. Sports news has about 20 minutes dedicated to football and about 3 minutes to cover all other sports. Before a match starts you have these people, usually ex footballers and commentators spending 30 minutes trying to predict what's going to happen in a game that's about as predictable as knowing whether you're going to fart or shit yourself when you have a bad case of diarrhoea. I'll watch England play if they get to the semifinals of the world cup, but that's purely for patriotic reasons. But apart from that I can't stand the game or it's overenthusiastic fans.

Yes, and often not in the sports section of the news. Halfway through the regular part of the news, the presenter says that the England manager says/plans something, without first saying that they're talking about football or even sport. They'll start a news item which sounds like they're talking about a battle when they're actually talking about a football match. That stuff isn't real news & shouldn't be on it. There should be separate programmes for sport during which they give all those details.

The thing is, a league is a slow grind. No playoffs, no final. The matches are all scheduled at the start of the season and every team will play all their games, usually twice against all the other teams, home and away. So apart from teams at the top meeting or teams at the bottom meeting, it can be quite hard to care about most games that don’t involve your own team. The channels covering it try to hype up every game as a big deal when they are often of limited interest.

It can seem like this on TV in Britain ( and most of Europe and South America frankly). Broadcasting organizations such as Sky were built by buying the rights to broadcast some leagues and competitions bringing a lot of money to the clubs. The worldwide viewing figures are simply astounding. As for the sport in the English FA there are over 5000 "Professional" Footballers ( some part-time and a separate Association for Women Players) . There are at least 10x more amateur and non registered players, this for the organized 11-a-side game. " Any given Saturday" * in the "Season" practically every park and village will have a pitch being played on. And yet, somehow, other sports and leisure activities take place as well but football does tend to dominate TV especially when international competitions take place. On of the delights of "amateur" Club sports is the "tour". Playing your sport in a different area, preferably abroad (most often France and Ireland). These will generally take place over an extended Weekend, with much socialising. *Sunday and Weekday evening matches take place as well

Football used to be like any other sport a long, long time ago. A noble, spirited outing of cheering and spinning clackers. Now hype is whipped up to a frenzy and rivalries are exemplified to war-like levels for the most trivial of matches. Wonder not at how psychotic, violent hooliganism came to be. Mitchell punctures the pomposity of it all in this sketch with that outsider look (he's not a fan, I presume) - football really shouldn't be apocalyptic.

Except that British football hooliganism was at it's peak, well before all this started and has largely disappeared with the onset of wall to wall coverage.. I'm not saying that the onset of hyped-up, blanket coverage caused the decline in hooliganism, I'm merely pointing out that they coincided and thus your implication, that this sort of coverage was amajor cause of hooliganism, is obviously complete bollocks! ;) :)
