Plenty of people in the UK don't like football. There's also lots of fairly casual fans who might also feel represented by "I'm not that into it"... people who might watch the final of a major tournament, or be vaguely interested when a match has a surprising result (like, very high scoring, or a top club gets beaten by a minnow) but will rarely if ever go out of their way to get football content. I love football. I also love Mitchell and Webb 😊

I used to work in a pub where this same guy used to come in wearing the opposite shirt to the local lot and was the first to jump into any punch up, funny part was he'd never seen a match in his life but his old man had been a lifelong supporter of the local team and his son never missed an opportunity to bash his team and it's fans cos the old git died before he got the chance to deck him properly... I swear on my life that went on for years until someone convinced him to forgive his father, at which point he was given all his dads old footy shirts going back to 1938 and he sold them for a fortune... but he swore the money had no part in his forgiveness (personally I think it had a whole heck of a lot to do with it... not to mention all the pints helped rosy his memory somewhat ;) )

A lot of people in the UK and the US are often shocked to learn that over the last 10 years, the total number of soccer team season ticket holders, i.e. across the whole of the UK has never risen *above 300,000 each year.* In contrast, in the 10 years between 1960 and 1969, the total number of season ticket holders across the whole of the UK never fell *below 9,000,000 each year.* The main reason for this massive downturn in numbers is the perceived greed by the clubs and their directors, and the often extortionate cost of season tickets in general. Soccer used to be a working-class sport for working-class men who were paid working-class wages. Not any more! For the 2019/2020 season, Arsenal were the worst offenders, charging their fans £2,013 ($2,738). And don't forget, that only gets you entry to home games, none of the away games. The 2nd worst offenders for bleeding their fans dry were Spurs at £1,895 ($2,578). Then Chelsea at £1,250 ($1,700), Man United at £950 ($1,292), Man City £900 ($1,225) and Liverpool charging £869 ($1,182). Meanwhile, Covid or no Covid through the 2021/22 season, Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to earn a *basic salary* from Manchester United of £996,000 ($1,354,000) *per week,* plus endorsements and sponsorship deals worth an *additional* £790,000 ($1,075,000) *per week.* That's £92,872,000 ($126,305,920) *per year!!!*

Probably a lot more people watch soccer on TV now than in the 60's though, I mean a Sky Sports(or whatever Premier League games are on) probably costs quite a bit. Also in 1958, the MAXIMUM weekly wage for a footballer was £20, which got scrapped in 1961.

British people who enjoy football only during important events like the World Cup or cup finals. They may or may not have a favourite team. 3. British who are casual football fans. They are fans of a team, and occasionally glance at the league tables, but they don’t watch every game. 4. British people who are full-blown “football is my religion”-type football fans.

Actually, although it’s not entirely true there’s a bit of a class division in England regarding football and rugby. The stereotype is that people who follow football are mostly from the working class and that rugby supporters are from the middle and upper-middle classes who all play it at their schools. Of course, many rugby supporters are working class people as well and many middle class and upper middle class love their football but generally you’d find that the make up of a rugby crowd is very different to that of a football crowd.

Rugby Union is more of a middle class school game than football, but Rugby League is a northern working class game.

@@philipr1567 That's absolutely right. mea culpa for not mentioning that distinction! We played Union at my school and being a soft Southern Jessy I didn't even think about League which was very remiss of me. Apologies!

@@ian757 As a "southern softie" myself, I didn't discover Rugby League until it started being covered on TV. My school offered a choice of "soccer" or "rugger" - I decided to try rugby (union) until I discovered I was even worse at it than football.

A big difference between football and rugby supporters is Rugby supporters are allowed to mix together at games, some football games require the fans to be separated.

@@deadcatthinks6725 That’s right. The nearest you come to any kind of aggro might be at Northampton but when that’s more banter really. Neath was pretty intimidating to play whilst at University. Their players were definitely out to be physical and the crowd was baying! 😎

Tribalism is a thing. Feeling that you're part of something that you're not personally involved in, but feel some kind of affiliation due to a sense of belonging, whether it be geographical or whatever other attachment felt. It's true that not everyone is, 'into', football. I've got a passing interest in it, but am not as mad about it as some are. The international tournaments generate a bit more interest than usual, but other than that, I'm fairly passive. My local team not being the best there is, might have something to do with it, though..

There are men who don't like football. They are often cricket fans, rugby fans, music fans (some people fall into more than one category), or those strange people you see at bus stops, muttering to themselves. I used to go to matches almost every week, but now, I'm more likely to be at a bus stop muttering to myself.

I've got nothing against the game of football, but I can't stand the people that think it's even slightly important. I'll enjoy a game with some mates, but then they'll ruin it by going on about formations or fucking transfer windows or some other banal shite. The "we" crowd is very real and ridiculous.

I don't like Association Football. I never have. Even as a kid I never kicked a round ball around with other boys. I couldn't see the point of it then, and I don't now. I strongly resent the amount of media attention given to it because it is so very boring.

I'm a Brit and I hate soccer for that very reason: the idiotic tribalism of the fans. It ranges from the stupid but harmless 'I'm a 'proud' Liverpool supporter' (as if it was some kind of achievement), to mindless pitched battles between rival fans, causing actual bodily harm and even loss of life.

According to Statistica (from a survey of 6k people in 2020) 61% of adult females and 38% of adult men never watch premier league matches. This could mean that a proportion of those simply exclusively watch other leagues, but that has to be a small number. I think it's fair to say the vast majority of those are simply adults who just have no interest in football. 6% and 19% for regular viewing of matches respectively. So that's about half of UK adults who are interested in any way, and around 1 in 8 who watch the premier league regularly. So no, far from 'everyone' in the UK are even remotely interested in Football. There are of course always going to be a fair number of people (such as myself) who cheer on England when they play in a tournament, but I suspect, like me, they also wouldn't answer yes to the question _Are you a football fan?_ Because no conversation could really follow from that answer!

You're fine calling it Soccer. It's an English word from the 19th century, routinely used in the UK until at least the 1980s, when for some reason it fell out of fashion. It comes from Oxford "er" slang, where words were truncated and "er" added to the end - like "rugger" for Rugby football, "brekker" for breakfast and "fiver" and "tenner" for five pound and ten pound banknotes.
