Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through KZbin videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Les vins du Valais ! I once went on a wine tasting route in the Valais. Super! The thing with Swiss wine is that they cannot produce enough to export much. Most of the production is therefore for local consumption.

At 14:30 Rick mentions the Habsburg Empire from Austria. Originally, the Habsburgs came from today's Switzerland, more precisely from the canton of Aargau. Their ancestral castle, the Habsburg, can be visited.

The Matterhorn has the highest death toll of any mountain. Other mountains are harder to climb, but because so many more climbers attempt it thinking its easy, they end up realising it is a lot more difficult and die. Also the north face of the Eiger is considered to be top 3 hardest climbs in the world. It's killed so many professional climbers they call it the Murder Wall.

Hello from Switzerland, 9:03 yes, these are stone slabs (mostly granite) to prevent rats and mice from gaining access, because supplies (dried meat and cheese) were usually stored in these rooms. Spoiled or not, ultimately there are so many corners and spots with us that there is still more than enough for everyone to discover and be overwhelmed. 20:10 I don't think you can go outside at all, it's just a vantage point. However, I don't think it's wise to just walk around on a glacier, because the crevasses are often covered by snow/ice and falling into a crevasse can quickly be fatal. If you want to hike over a glacier, you are well advised to take a local mountain guide with you (who also specifies the necessary equipment). There are not only the paths that were created by the farmers with their cows, but also those that were created by trade, such as the Gotthard Pass. And roads, yes, there are almost everywhere (some initiated by the army to get access to the hill forts etc.), however some are rather narrow, confusing and with tight curves, a challenge for someone who doesn't is used to. Sure, some paths, roads and mountain passages are closed in winter, not only because of the snow on the road but also because of the danger of avalanches. Yes, you get sunburned faster in the mountains, and then there is the reflection of the snow, which makes it even more intense (like on the water). Oh, you think we don't make wine in Switzerland? Far from it, especially the west (French-speaking Switzerland) and the south, Valais and Ticino are well known (in Switzerland) for their wine. The reason why "nobody" knows about it is because we almost all drink it ourselves (don't tell anyone else, we want to keep a few secrets for ourselves). However, the Bernese Oberland in particular is probably too rough for vines, especially in winter.

Lavaux is a region in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, in the district of Lavaux-Oron. Lavaux consists of 830 hectares of terraced vineyards that stretch for about 30 km along the south-facing northern shores of Lake Geneva. It is listed as UNESCO World Heritage site.

actually when u stopped at 19:00, this scenery was the inspiration for the shire in tolkiens lord of the rings. he visited lauterbrunnen many times to disconnect from the world and write his awesome books i live in the swiss flats but just visited this area, exactly a year ago to show this beauty to some friends from germany. it was just an amazing experience for all of us.

Those houses on stilts with the stones in between are storage barns! :) The mice and rats can’t climb upside down, so the harvest would be safe from them with that extra border

Switzerland is amazing. I've walked up to the Hornlihutte on the Matterhorn, hiked down the Aletsch Glacier from the Jungfraujoch, and was defeated by snow on the Schilthorn.

There are a lot of wineyards in Switzerland. But not at high altitude. Climate in Switzerland in really diverse, due to altitude. it is said that when you go up 1000 meters in altitude, the climate changes as if you were going 1000 kilometers north. so in Switzerland we go from a Mediterranean climate to an Arctic climate in a few dozen kilometers.

Man, you have got my nostalgia going! I traveled through Switzerland on a high school French trip and I 100% agree about the breathtaking beauty of the landscape. I've always wanted to get back there and hike some of those trails. As for the sunburn risk.... that's a big yes. I spent a summer in college studying in the French Alps (equally gorgeous) and, naive Ohio girl that I was, thought nothing of sitting outside on an overcast day one afternoon in May. I full on got sun poisoning and had tshirt tan lines from that one day for nearly two years! Wear sunscreen.

Excellent film - Rick Steves is the best at making these journeys and taking us along. This is such a beautiful country - thank you for showing this, Connor. PS grapes are grown in some parts of Switzerland, the French speaking area to the west (and maybe elsewhere). I am sure they probably make wine.

28:21 Agsin, you guessed correctly. It's often to cold for grapes, there is Swiss wine, but it's for the most part grow in the valleys. some though grow them suprisingly high, but with much smaller harvest (due to the short summer), thus making it mostly for regional consumption. Also grapes need specific soil types to really be usable for wine production (sandy yet nutrient rich) which is rarely the case in the alps.

22:40 These paths the senns (herder) used, are sometimes still used today for that reason (twice a year, once up, once down). But most today are hiking paths. The more accessible ones are made into roads, but most are hiking paths.

22:00 you can just go outside and walk wherever you want. but I recommend you to have some serious mountaineering equipment and experiance. otherwise you can die very fast. the glaciers have huge holes you don't see when walking on them. and you also can get exausted very fast because of the hight. but you can do mountaineering in the alps wherever you like for free. if you can't do it and die: well it's your live! :P ;)

What a coincidence you should react to this! I've just got back (a week ago) from a holiday in Switzerland. I spent a couple days each in Basel, Bern, Lucerne and Zurich. I did lots of hiking!...and eating cheese...haha 😂

I'm Swiss and and enjoy traveling but to be honest, I have yet to find a place that is more beautiful than Switzerland. Other countries are beautiful too of course and I love experiencing different cultures, different foods, different nature. But was it ever more beautiful? Not really.

Southern Switzerland has quite extensive vinyards, mostly in Valais and Ticino, but also in the cantons along the southern Jura mountains. However, with the comparatively small area and France being a direct neighbor, swiss wines just don't have the production volume or renown to compete on the global market. Still, there's a lot of good wine to be had in Switzerland.

We have kind a lot of wine in Switzerland, but i guess we are too small to be recognized out of Switzerland. And unfortunately even a lot of Swiss people say that they don^t like Swiss wine. May it is also too expensive as the salaries a high and the ground expensive.

Annapurna has the heigest death rate it is around 33% (63 is the last number i found). However with about 500 deaths and counting more found ther end on the Matterhorn. So it is e question of amount vs. percentage

Think it was K2 that had like a 25% death rate for many years, although I believe it has improved over recent years due to better equiment/knowledge ect

I live in Switzerland and can explain you something: 5:50 The Matterhorn is dangerous. 8 to 10 people dies every year. But, in fact, that up to 3000 climbs on this mountain, the chance to die is 0.3%, its the 5th most dangerous mountain in the world. 9:05 These are discs of stone. So mice or other small animals can't reach wathever you store in this buildings. 9:30 Here you hear and see the worst ever swiss folk musicians. They are there for making money with tourists only. 28:02 Switzerland has a great Tradition of wine, but not in the mountains, it's to cold and to high altitude for grapes. In the lower valleys like in the canton Wallis or Ticino grapes are growing well. 33:20 The Schilthorn, aka Piz Gloria from the movie "James Bond 007 - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service". As the cable car and the building on the summit was finished, it was a location of this movie, bevore it was opened for public.

27:25 Well, It worked a little bit different back then. there are many, richer places in switzerland with a less nice view. Back in the day, the poorest people had to live where it was hard to survive. fx: the poor familys got their land near the lakes because the land was getting flodded bei the lake many times in the year. the rich people had their land far away from the lakes. the irony is: today the land near the lake is worth a fortune. so the poor people became very rich. ;)

No. The alps were created by tectonic movements. He is right. During jurassic times, Switzerland was covered by a tropical sea. I found once myself the skeleton of a Nautilus on 1600 meters above sea level.
