Rugby Union has multiple different specialised positions that tend to favour different body shapes and sizes depending on their roles, similar to American Football. That's why you get a mixture of large and small. Unlike American Football you can't swap players on and off at any time, (there are sig restrictions on substitutions). So every player will have to tackle, every player will have to attack, every player will have to be able to pass etc. The aerobic fitness requirements are therefore way higher in rugby. Rugby league is different to union in that there are fewer positions, less variety in the game and as such a little less variety in player shapes.

There was a big arena where events were held ,it was basically an empty field when it wasn't in use, some Americans where playing touch football when a bunch of us Brits rocked with a rugby ball. They wanted to try Rugby so we explained some basic rules and started to play, they lasted 10 mins and then wanted to go back to Touch Football. Make of that what you will😉
@PatrickBrown9244 күн бұрын
You're absolutely right, different positions require different physiques and skill sets (although they're not quite as specialised as in American football - everyone can carry the ball, everyone has to defend, many players will kick). There are eight forwards (numbered 1-8) and seven backs (numbered 9-15). The forwards are generally bigger and stronger than the backs, the backs are generally quicker and better passers and kickers than the forwards. In the clip you asked that about, the ball-carrier, Emmanuel Tshituka, is wearing number 6, so he's a flanker, a forward position. The flankers are generally the quickest of the forwards - hard running ball carriers and busy tacklers. The nearest equivalent American football position would probably be a linebacker. I can't see the number of the player he flattened, but based on where he's positioned on the field he's probably a fullback. You can get away with being relatively small in that position. Think of him as being similar to a defensive back or kick returner. I'd suggest watching Rugby 101: Rugby positions explained from the Couch Rugby channel to get a better idea. Top ten countries in the World Rugby Rankings are currently 1. South Africa, 2. Ireland, 3. New Zealand, 4. France, 5. Argentina, 6. Scotland, 7. England, 8. Australia, 9. Fiji, and 10. Italy. A number of rugby players have tried to make it in the NFL via the International Player Pathway. Travis Clayton plays offensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills. Christian Wade was on the Bills' practice squad for a few years as a running back. Louis Rees-Zammit is currently a wide receiver on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. Aaron Sexton, from my home town club, Ulster, will join the IPP in January. It's really hard to make the transition, American football is such a technical sport with complicated playbooks to remember, and you need a very different kind of conditioning. Rugby is more constant running, American football is more explosive action, then recover, then explosive action again.

At the back of most tackles their job is to pull the ball and pass it quickly in order to keep movement alive (you'd have to get beastly cardio or only play a short time and get subbed). If you want an example of one of the best New Zealand halfback's check out TJ Perenara.
@jamesdignanmusic27654 күн бұрын
3:20, The forwards have body strength, the backs have speed. You'd be the right build for a scrum-half (number 9) - more muscle, and you'd be a doppelganger of former NZ player Byron Kelleher. 7:40 - the South African player (in green) lost the ball forward, so didn't score. The ball went into touch (=out of play) in the In-Goal area (=End Zone). The other team (Australia) gained possession, but no points. BTW, If you want to know how brutal rugby can be, look up the story of Buck Shelford and the "Battle of Nantes" - but be prepared to wince...

Rugby originated at Rugby school in Warwickshire, England. There is Rugby Union and Rugby league. The man who would have been the most notable player was called Robert Blair Mayne, unfortunately his career was curtailed by WW2. He then went on to lead the SAS after David Stirling was taken POW. He was recognised by South Africa as a potential significant player. Still his place in history was assured as the most decorated warrior never to be awarded the Victoria Cross. In Australia, it s behind australian rules, Rugby league, cricket, Tennis... perhaps on par with Swimming, soccer and Basketball ( not sure tough ). The different size question is a very poignant one. In rugby union, it really is a game for all, if you're a 6 foot 5 upwards giant, you'll be a 2nd row/lock candidate, stocky built, you can be a prop, 5 foot 6 -9, maybe a scrum half. And so it goes. It means you'll end up either a forward - mostly about the power (for set plays, scrums, line outs, mauls, rucks), or end up a back - mostly about the speed and passing. It will create mismatches like you see in this video. But a mismatch goes both ways as you'll often see a slightly built speed merchant waltz around a gorilla sized player as if he isn't there, in a 1 v 1.

Greetings from France. I like both US football and Rugby and altough i prefer the later, i do think US football is more brutal. Granted, no pads in Rugby, but the rules governing tackles are totaly different and far less permissives ( well... nowaday...). You must catch your oponent with your arms, and of course below the armpits. Any direct hit ( with the shoulders, the arms, to the head and so on ) will result in a yellow card if not a red one. Also, Rugby players tend to be a bit less powerfull ( well... just a bit, you don t want to suffer a tackle from those guys... ) than NFL players due to the fact they got to developp a lot of other skills than simply raw physical power ( if you compare them to a full back, a linesman or a linebacker for example ). Remember, each player may carry or pass the ball, may tackle or engage in a ruck. They also need stamina for at least 50 minutes of non stop play plus several specific habilities based on their position in the team ( like scrum for the forwards or kicking for the backs ). So quiet honnestly, i think US football is more brutal, but Rugby players are more complete athletes. And i also favour Rugby for a lot of other reasons, but that is off topic.

In New Zealand Rugby is not a sport it is a religion. That is one of the main reasons why the All Blacks and the women's Rugby teams, Black Ferns, are so dominant on the Rugby world stage. The All Blacks could potentially be even stronger if they were not so dogmatic abiut player eligibility. Any New Zealand Rugby player that leaves New Zealand, for even one season, to play professional Rugby for a club in another country, mostly for the bigger paychecks, is automatically deemed ineligible to play for the All Blacks, the tier one national team, for the rest of their lives with only rare exceptional players ever having that ban lifted once it has been applied. Rugby is a world sport but is mainly played as two different competitions at the elite level one in the Northern Hemisphere centered on Europe, and one in the Southern Hemisphere centered on New Zealand, Australia and Oceania. South Africa is an odd one that can play in the NZ, Aus competition as the seasons align or else go North to Europe but the seasons will be out of whack. Rugby is a Winter sport. Argentina is in a similar position regarding the seasons and Euopean or Oceania competitions. Argentina is probably the weakest of the major player nations in Rugby but has virtually no competion from fellow South American countries, or even North American countries. Japan has recently taken a greater interest in Rugby, and is one of few Asian nations that can field competitive national Rugby teams. Japan has made attempts to field competative teams in the Rugby Oceanua competition but the difference in North-South seasons generally have not helped what is still a minnow in Rugby. England, Wales and Ireland can usually field strong competative Rugby teams. Even the USA has fielded world standard Rugby teams but generally only in the women's competition with the Women's USA Rugby Sevens winning an Olympic medal at a recent Olympic Games. Perhaps you could feature one or more Women's International Rugby Sevens games on your channel as a sport that is fast, quick and interesting without much of the brutality of normal Rugby and played in a much more open format.
@relaidjacherifi44943 күн бұрын
There s a catch: if you allow that, all your top players will end up in Europe ( much more money... ). So in time, it will kill your provinces, which, in turn, could have severe effects for the whole Rugby ecosystem in NZ... including the All Blacks. So your point is valid, but it s a bit more complicated. You will have to be creative to fix that.

You need to understand the numbering system in Rugby. Numbers designate positions (although within a game a player can switch roles without changing numbers. 1-8 are 'Forwards' the big brutes who are involved in the scrums, rucks, mauls, lineouts, etc and do the 'heavy work'. 9 is the scrum half, traditionally the smallest player, he/she links forwards and backs. 10 is the fly half who is generally the main playmaker, often lean, quick, slick passers and kickers. 12 and 13 are strong, quick midfielders, solid in defence but looking for holes in attack. 11, 14, and 15 are the back three, 11 and 14 are wings and are the greyhounds and finishers. 15 is the full back who needs bravery, positional understanding, speed to cover, and link in with wings in counterattacks. It is said in rugby that 'Forwards win games, but backs determine the margin of difference.'

I'm from Wales and used to play rugby when I was in school but I was banned by the headmaster for being too aggressive. This was back in 1981. I'm 57 now and been living in Canada for over 20 years.

The size for position is bang on dude. Usually the larger sized players tend to be the forwards, positions 1 - 8, the smaller players, while still big, 9-15

Years ago my brother was playing school rugby when he knocked his knee cap right to the back of his knee. His girfriend was rather blind Stus friend walked up to us saying, i am going to through up. The St, Johns ambulance came to scoop him up and his knee cap got knocked back around, nasty. He was in a full stoockie plaster cast foe 6 weeks. We went to our wonderful lockal cider house, Stu had this cast leg propped up on the front wing of my boyfriends beatle. His idiot of a friend drove right into his leg, squishing his cast.

the thing that i presume you see and alot of americans see is that you think the tackling technique isnt very good compared to the NFL and you think you could tackle better. what you miss is the fact that in rugby everyone passes the ball(laterals) if they can while being tackled, unlike the NFL. so that why in rugby alot of the tackles are higher and try and wrap the players arms up, while in NFL the tackles are generally lower and more effective at getting the man down but if that was in rugby the player would just pass it to another player and keep the drive going.

You wouldn't stand a chance against those guys because they are international and elite level players. I'm sure you could play regular club rugby just fine, but you would be in pain for 3 or 4 days afterwards. It's not worth it.

Connor, of course rugby is more brutal than American football, rugby players wear very very little in the way of protection, so the tackling is so much more telling on the body, and that applies to both Rugby Union and Rugby League. American footballers would be exhausted if they played a game of rugby.

What do you mean ' laying down '? There is NO excuse for LAYING DOWN. Get back on your feet and cover your position/man. You lay down if you are unconscious.

Rugby is THE 2nd most popular team sport in the world after Soccer. Rugby is played in over 200 countries. Look at IRB world rankings for info on nations. Rugby is FAR tougher than American Football - no contest. Average US Football player spends less than 2 mins in potential contact situation in any average game. Quarter Back has most game time and might get 10 mins total. In Rugby most players will get full 80 minutes or minimum of 50 mins. No pads, or helmuts, and all players must attack and defend equally well. Many kick also. There's few stoppages in play. At elite level the players are just as big and fit. No contest on toughness/brutality. The US presenter could play in a game against pros in this video. He'd likely not die but could be seriously injured UNTIL he learned/trained correct tackle technique, how to take body shots. Small guys can tackle these monsters with good technique without injury concern

Like all sports. There are varying levels of entry. You could/would start at a lower level. Most of these games were professional and international matches. The elite. What you are asking is like. Coukd i swim at the Olympics. You start sonewhere. Train. Practice. See how far you could go.

in rugby you get forwards ( numbers 1-8 ) scrum half (9) backs ( 10-15 ) , the forwards are the heavy guys they are the main attack and defence , the scrum half is the link between the forwards and the backs , then you have the backs who have the speed and the skills ....... i see you as a back or scrum half ....

A major contributing factor to NZ's frequent dominance in world Rugby Union is simply the popularity of the sport in the country. A much larger percentage of NZers play rugby than play any other winter sport, so, despite having a smaller population, we may actually have a larger pool of players to choose international players from. As in other strong rugby countries, there is a comprehensive player development program from early age, but I think it's the sheer numbers in the player pool that can give us the edge over larger countries.

Beauty of rugby anyone can play you need nothing no boots or even a proper ball, just a bunch of people willing have some crazy fun.
@Dreyno2 күн бұрын
Same reason. Some positions require mass, some require height, some require speed etc. All require strength and endurance though. Endurance being the biggest difference with American football. You need to run far more and need to make frequent tackles, ruck interventions, carries etc.

If you came up against the late great Jonah Lomu of New Zealand, I would give you about a two minutes survival, He stood 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and weighed119 kilograms (262 lb) and moved like lightening.

Without training your neck and other support muscles... I guess you can run until the first tackle. Best would be in the wrong direction away from the ball.

Will Skelton? He's a huge Kiwi-born Aussie International of (not Maori but one of the Islands, Tongan or Samoan ancestry) who iirc moved to a French team from Saracens (an English club based in London) about 3 yrs back ....and no, not all RU players are the same size. Like other v.physical team sports, it often depends on where they play. If you're a Prop, it helps to be Neanderthalic. Scale one up a fair bit and you've got a Second Row, like big Will, above. Wing-Three-Quarters more typically fall into the athletic speed demon bracket. Got both?... maybe a Centre (Outside or Inside)?... and so on. I used to play Centre, or 'Tighthead'... but am still in possession of both lugs, so you'd never guess!😁

the forwards are normally more bulky and like the loose forwards are big they are fast as well the backs tend to be more streamlined about 100 to 120kgs in weight

Alot of reaction channels like to focus on the hits, blood, skills, pace etc but not many look at the RESPECT side of the game. A couple guys might really get into it on the field but if that same person is seen to be badly hurt In a tackle he'll stay with him, raise his hand & make sure he's good until a medic arrives, they also always share hands at the conclusion of a match, sometimes they trade jerseys and you see they same 2 guys that were fighting 20 minutes ago, laughing, shaking hands, chatting etc. There's a few RESPECT videos out there you should check out

We can start playing rugby from 4 ,and progress in skill level , size can count but skill is more important ,wingers need too be fast and mobile ,best winger Jona lomu he was massive , scrum half south African faf de klerk in rugby sizes he is tiny but will take anybody down ,Wales had an incredible winger nigel walker Olympic 110 metre hurdler , it's more about skill than size but having skill and size helps
