A place being reputedly haunted, does not make it 'evil'. I'd argue that the Tower of London was the most evil place in Britain, because of all of the torture and executions that went on there. Glencoe, 25 Cromwell Street, 10 Rillington Place, 195 Melrose Avenue might also be considered evil because of the numerous murders that happened there.

I grew up in Whitby and visiting the Abby and the graveyard around it was like the norm for me, it wasn't until I was older that I learned all the history about it. To visit the Abby like on grounds you have to pay to go in but me and my mates would always just hop the back fences once it was closed and just chill on the ruins all night, pretty crazy thinking back on it. I would definitely recommend the visit!

Corfe Castle is worth a look, as is most of the county of Dorset. You can take the Heritage steam railway from Swanage to the Castle. During the Civil Wars from 1642 to 1651, there were three distinct wars during this period, most of the 13 Colonies 'generally' sided with Parliament against the Monarchy, although Virginia and Maryland favoured the King and New Amsterdam, later NewYork, was still Dutch.

I will say however in Highgate cemetery there is a building facing opposite which used to be a hospital for children back in 1922 and now has been converted into a nursery but has been over 200 deaths recorded in that hospital during 1922-1938 and most of those children are buried in Highgate cemetery, however there was a “child with a missing head” and till this day nobody knows how. But the ghost of the child has been seen wondering the now-school by little children in the nursery. Edit: the morgue was detached from the hospital but now is in the children’s playing era outdoors and there has been faint mumbling heard and banging.

Technically We've had several civil wars but when people say "the civil war" they mean the English Civil War (1642-1652) between Royalists (Caveliers) and Parlimentarions (Roundheads) which ended up as us becoming a Republic for 11 years, after which we decided we didn't like the Cromwells and restored the Monachy.

As far as I know it was not a case of 'We' did not like the cromwells. Oliver was popular up to a point as were his Republican ideas as most of Parliament were at the time of The Republic, Republicans. But he died and it was his younger imbecilic son who was not acceptable as the Chirf Protector. 'We' of course did not vote or have a say in the 'Restoration', When Charles the 2nd was asked to return as The King. One question I have had for many years is who on earth was it that invted him back. Seeing as how most of Parliament was supposedly Republican then why or who invited him to King. It was the start of a whole new set of troubles as he was inwardly Catholic and no Catholic was allowed to be the King. Remembering that the Monarch was also the Head of The Church of England. Charles the 2nd then went on a killing spree killing those who had beheaded his father. I believe Charles II also appointed The hanging Judge Jefferies who went about sentencing the Republicans or supportors of Cromwell to death. So who was the 'we' you stated who didn't like the cromwells.

If you go to Birmingham you should visit Aston Hall (but don't stray in to Aston itself, you'll regret it! Lol) - steeped in history, especially civil war stuff. There's an attic room where a young servant boy was locked in for stealing bread from the kitchen, and rather than wait for the master to come home and punish him, he hung himself - the room is really creepy, and even though I'm a big sceptic I was creeped out and didn't want to spend much time in there! I've had a few experiences with 'ghosts' (including regular ones in my own flat), but I do believe there's a scientific explanation for them rather than a 'spiritual' one, and there's no reason to fear them. Even so, the Aston one sent shivers through me!

She was wrong about the Vampire in the Glasgow Necropolis, the vampire is in the "Southern" Necropolis which is a completely different graveyard a few miles away. Some local children became convinced there was a vampire killing local children and they all went hunting for the vampire in the Southern Necropolis at night in 1954. It is known as "The Gorbals Vampire". The main Necropolis is around the Centre of Glasgow, the Southern Necropolis is south of the river about 2.5 miles away. You'll probably be interested to know that Thomas Lipton, founder of the Lipton Tea company is buried in the Southern Necropolis.

I've stayed the night with friends, at Briavels Castle. It's not possible to stay "in" the oubliette, which is a stone-walled circular well about 25 ft deep, but it is possible to stay in a room over the top of it, which is what we did. It is also possible to remove a cover and see down into the pit with a plastic skeleton chained to the bottom of it. The only way in or out is through the cover.

It holds Lancaster crown court where petty criminals were branded on the left hand with the letter 'M' (until the late 1700s) also Lancaster crown court has the dubious dististinction of being the single court room to have passed the most death sentences in England and the castle it is the site of the most public executions outside of London. The court is still in use and the 'drop room' (where people were executed when they stopped being public) is still there and is now the jury deliberation room.

My hubby & I went on a road trip in Ireland. Haunted castle to haunted castle. Some had been made into hotels or B&Bs, some weren't for staying overnight - just a tour, and one was owned by a family who had one guest room. We brought the wine, they made the dinner, and we talked the night away about the haunted places nearby. They even took us on a candlelight tour at midnight to hunt for ghosts. The hardest part was driving on the left side of the road, on the right side of the car, on VERY narrow lanes lined with rock walls. My recommendation is to search out the places you want to see, check which might allow you to stay the night (or two), and make a map showing how far you plan to travel in a day. We Americans are used to an 8hr road trip, but in Ireland or England, a couple of hours will get you to another interesting location. Don't rush it. New sub!

Hi from Scotland. I have seen two unbeknown things in my life and experienced several more. One is the ghost of Tantallon castle in Scotland which is on YT. I`m not far from there and saw it in 1991 ish while visiting with friends, exactly as it showed in YT vid, retreating once seen. The other was a white human shaped mist moving quickly from left to right past a glass door in my mums house. She had seen this many times and I didn't know what to think as she was in her 70`s and had told me about it before, and also that it would stop and apparently observe her through the door from the hallway. Funnily enough that was the last time she saw it and the first time it had passed from left to right down the hallway and past the door. I was relieved to have witnessed this with her, as I thought she might have been losing her marbles. Regards from Scotland!

There’s plenty of haunted houses all over the world in every country and island. I love a pub at Lake Cargelligo NSW Australia. The whole place is very haunting. Don’t know whether I will stay there again. Might stay at the motel down the road. Beautiful place to visit. Very tranquil and peaceful, wide open roads and spaces a plenty 👍

Number 9, the Glasgow Necropolis. I had to laugh when you paused & said it looked so scary... That's where I used to kick about in my teens. We'd go up there to have a booze at night. And I have no idea if they're still there, but back in the late 90's early 2000's they actually introduced about 6 deer to the graveyard... Even tho it's less than a mile from the city centre.

In British ghost folklore, white attire signifies that they are from the spirit world, distinct from the living. It was also common funeral attire for children and unmarried women, so there was a strong cultural association with dead women in white, which is reinforced by British literature, art, and theatre often depicting female ghosts in white dresses. White dresses were also very popular amongst young Victorian women. Plus there is the usual associations with purity and innocence.

The “screaming woods” is a funny one cause Fox’s make awful screaming sounds when they mate, Iv heard them it literally sounds like someone being murdered. I will say though, I had an awful supernatural experience at Chillingham castle that convinced me that place was evil, and I will never be going back. Also The Drummer boy story isn’t exactly right, during the attack on the castle the invading forces were trying to find a way into the castle and found a small cave system they believed was a way in, but it was far to small for a full grown man so they sent a little boy in to follow the cave and gave him a drum so he could play it and they could follow by sound. They followed the little boys march, only for the drums to suddenly stop dead into silence, and the boy was never seen again. But they attacking army left a headstone for the boy, and legend says if u stand there silently u can here the little boy play his March underground.

"Ya'll had a Civil War?"... No, we've had several. Aside from "The English Civil War" which was mentioned, the next most well know is "The War of the Roses". There was also: The Revolt of the Earls, The Great Revolt, The Anarchy, The First Barons' War, The Second Barons' War, The Peasants' Revolt, The Pilgrimage of Grace, The Prayer Book Rebellion, Kett's Rebellion, and The Glorious Revolution.

Problem with Whitby Abbey being haunted by a girl who died falling from the "Abbey's High Tower" - Whitby Abbey doesn't have and never has had a tower, high or otherwise! (Perhaps she had one shipped in especially by 'SuicidesRus'!)

It had a central tower that collapsed in 1830. Henry VIII had a lot of stuff removed from Whitby Abbey that was valuable, like the lead from the roof and glass from the windows. Eventually the roof and central tower collapsed.

The stately home of Motley Hall is said to be haunted by many ghosts. Among others is a Elizabethan, (first Elizabeth), jester. There's The White Lady who moans a lot, The ghost of Sir George Uproar who once owned the house, and an ancestor of his, Sir Francis. Not forgetting that the ghost of a young stable boy also haunts the place. There were many sightings over a period of years.

gloss ter shire. lots of floors look like that. our cival wars (we had 2) one was the Plantagenet's fighting themselves, eventually won in by the Lancasterian, Henry 7, he then married the most senior female yorkist. this was also known as the cousins war, as it was the descendants of a previous king. the other civil war was mid 1600's, round heads (parliamentarians) and cavaliers (royalists). the round heads won, beheaded Charles 1st and went on to the short lived commonwealth experiment. after Oliver Cromwell died, chaos broke out and Charles son Charles 2nd was crowned, though he was kink of Scotland most of the time of the commonwealth. those stripes are common place at historical sites. Whitby, is where Bram stoker had Count Dracula move too (it's a very long way from London) and is famous as the producer of scampi, which is a type of breaded lobster ball. loads of old hanging sites left

Yes, the pronunciations are terrible. To add to what other commenters have said, I think the first castle is St Briavels - which may be pronounced 'brivlz'; Glencoe is in Argyll, pronounced 'ah-guile'; Norfolk is pronounced norf-erk. The Massacre of Glencoe happened when the Chief of the Macdonalds was slow in surrendering to William III and II. The massacrers, mostly from Clan Campbell, had, according to traditional Highland hospitality, been put up by the Macdonalds, so it was felt to be particularly treacherous. The two Clans still hate each other. The local mountains are still spectacular and dangerous, with seemingly several climbers getting killed each year. Chillingham Castle is also famous for its cattle, which are an unusual and primitive breed and live semi-wild. A horrible thing happened in Corfe Castle about 1209. King John had fallen out with a favourite, William de Braose, so he starved to death that man's wife and son. (One of them ate the other...) King Edward the Martyr was indeed murdered at Corfe by partisans of his step-mother in 978, leading to the succession of his teenage half-brother King Ethelred the Unready (Ill-advised), one of the most incompetent Kings in our history. We'd just started crowning our Kings; I believe the then Archbishop of Canterbury, St. Dunstan, who'd devised the ceremony, when he crowned Ethelred, made rather a stern prayer telling him to rule well. Towards the end of King Charles's Coronation in 2023, King Charles mounted the Throne - he had earlier been on St Edward's Chair - that same prayer was read out to Charles by the present Archbishop. Did you see that Karl Marx's grave was in Highgate Cemetery?

About the Buried Alive story, let me say something concerning it. It wasn't uncommon for Epilepsy Sufferers to be mistaken for having died suddenly in those days. What was mistaken for a corpse was in fact an unconscious person. As an epileptic myself, i'm certainly glad I wasn't born back then, otherwise I would be dead before my time in more ways than 1. So you see, it would not always be death by malicious intent.
