One left out is bamburgh castle on the north east coast of Northumberland which was used in the film Robin Hood Prince of thieves
@zeeoxАй бұрын
Really? I don't really recall Bamburgh being used for that film. They used Old Wardour Castle for Robin's family home (Locksley Castle) I recall (and briefly used Alnwick for another scene, too). I mean, the film locations for that film were all over the place (including France!). ...RIP Sycamore Gap tree.

Alnwick Castle, (pronounced ANNIK) also contains The Fusilier Museum of the County Regiment. I volunteer there one day per week. Northumberland has more castles than any other County, as well as Bastles, which are fortified farmhouses.

Launceston Castle in Cornwall used (and may still) to have a music festival in the grounds every year called Castle Rock. If you have the money and you’re in Edinburgh at the time of the Tattoo (and obviously book it in time), you can buy tickets for the Tattoo that include a meal in specific rooms of Edinburgh Castle before taking your seat to watch the pipes and drums of the Tattoo. Many of the castles of the UK are still used as military barracks, so also played roles during WWII (though not to the same extent as Dover). I would suggest that if you’re planning on visiting lots of castles and stately homes when you visit the UK, it’s worth looking into getting a membership of one of the heritage trusts, like English Heritage or Scottish Heritage or Cadw (the Welsh heritage trust, as in the first year it covers your entry into the the specific trust you joined but gives you a reduced rate for the others but from the start of your second year of membership, entry into all of the heritage trusts is included. So if you’re going to be visiting a lot of their properties, it massively reduces the costs involved.

Rochester castle is where the movie "Iron Clad" was set. These are only English Castles and mainly "down South". Wales has more castles than anywhere else. So do your tourist thing, then go to Wales for camping & castles. Harlech, Caernarvon and Conwy are my favourites. Others are: Skipton, Mary Queen of Scots, was imprisoned there. Scarborough, built by Vikings and Bamburgh known as "Bebbanburgh" in the Last Kingdom series & movie.
@timberwolf5211Ай бұрын
Out of all of the castles on this list, the only ones I've not been to, so far, are Highclere, Alnwick and Windsor. All the others I have. I think I'm up to 15 or more so far. Dover Castle is 45 miles away, Bodium Castle, the one with the moat,is 32miles, Leeds is only 14 miles miles away, and Rochester Castle, my favourite, is only 3 miles away. Rochester castle is the tallest keep castle in England. It was held at siege by King John in 1215 AD He undermined one of the towers to get in, and when the tower was rebuilt, it was rebuilt with a round tower, as they were harder to knock down. It was also used as the front cover of the album Legend by Irish folk group Clannad. Seems fitting as the Lefend album was the sound track to the TV series Robin Of Sherwood, who fought against King John in the stories. About 6 yrs ago, my daughter's American friend from Iowa came to the UK for six months. He'd been here a week when there was a medieval fair at Rochester Castle, and actor Adrian Paul from the series Highlander, doing his sword show, so we went. As we got out the taxi, I called Rusty's attention to see his first castle, sitting up on the hill. While he was standing still, slack jawed in awe, I casually pointed out that that castle had already been standing right there, for more than 200 yrs BEFORE his country was ever officially discovered! Lets just say, that after a day at the castle, andbthe historic Dickensian town that Rochester is, he was blown away by even the cobble stone paths! Lol

You really should go to Windsor castle one day so that you can visit Lizzie's grave in St George's Chapel. I once went to Arundel Castle for a regional tourism conference. It was closed to the public and we got a private tour which was wonderful. At the end of the day I somehow ended up alone in the Great Hall whilst waiting for my colleague. It was a special moment and I felt very lucky to be stood by myself in such an historic room. Highclere Castle (I live about 30 mins from there) was home to one of Elizabeth II's closest friends, the 7th Earl of Canarvon, known at Porchey. He was her racing manager. Another previous Earl funded the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. For anyone visiting the area also visit the nearby Sandham Chapel. It was built as a memorial to a son who died in WWI and worked on by another who survived. It's plain on the outside but inside is astonishing.

They missed out a very important bit from Highclere Castle. It is the seat of the Earl's of Carnarvon. The 5th Earl financed Howard Carter's search for the Tomb of Tutankhamun and was there when the Tomb was opened. He died in Egypt supposedly of the Mummy's Curse , but it is more likely it was from and infected Mosquitoe bite (Sepsis).

And there are so many others...Other commenters have corrected the pronunciation of Alnwick, and mentioned the beautiful Bamburgh Castle. In the displays sometimes held at these castles, there are indeed actors. But I believe - other commenters may have taken part and can tell us - that there is a whole tournament scene. Obviously there are limits, but there is some real fighting. Dressed in armour, people fight each other standing up. Not for the faint-hearted!

When you visit many of the events held in these places can be a little expensive as can the gift shops and cafés so pack a lunch. I understand they need all the money they can get to keep the building in good condition but the cost for visitors can ad up fast. So my advice is to save money on food and plan your visit around one of their fantastic events that you don't mind paying a little extra to see. Because that way you can have a fun day out and have more money to go do it again a few times before you go home. Many people un the Uk are members of the national trust which is a very old organisation that owns and funs most of these like your national parks service but its a charity and you pay an annual subscription fee to get free entry to thousands of beautiful hostoric sights off season and ticket discounts to big events.

If ever you come to the UK you will find castles all over the place. E.g. I live within a few minutes' drive from several as well as near many stately homes. You can see some castles and stately homes from railway lines and the motorways but they will not necessarily be mentioned as you pass them. He didn't cover the Scottish and Welsh castles. Have a look e.g. at Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle as well as Caernarfon* (Carnarvon**) and Conwy* (Conway**). [*= Welsh spelling, ** =English spelling, look under both spellings!] A lot of our castles did not slowly deteriorate, they were destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in the English Civil Wars. He was responsible for the wanton destruction of castles in many of the places he had control over. He was also responsible for transporting people who disagreed with him or who had been in the opposing armies to the Americas. This includes the persecution of people from Ireland too. Had he not been so destructive they too would proably still be in tact like the ones you saw on this video. There are, of course, hundreds of castles that are still as they were but also many that are ruins.
