The chateau d’Ussé did not inspired Disney for the animation adaptation of sleeping beauty, but it inspired the author of the tale sleeping beauty, Charles Perrault, who lived in Loire Valley, and wrote the tale based on the chateaux that he knew 400 years before Disney did a movie about this tale !!…

Yeah there's a distinct lack of purely medieval castle in the original video, even though there are many in France as well. Guess they liked the Renaissance style better.

Chenonceau is a BRIDGE castle !!! over the river Cher. Some Renaissance chateaux were just modified Medieval castles with enlarged windows and fancier roofs as those castles were becoming obsolete in terms of defenses because of the new gun powder artillery... Others startes as imitation of Medieval castles with same fancier features. What sets Blois apart is that it's been modified throughout the centuries from late Middle Ages to Louis XIV.... All those eras are recognizable in the four facades of the courtyard, it's a very nice visit. It features a Salamander seal above the main entrance or above every mantlepiece, the seal of King François the 1st. Sully sur Loire is a very nice visit as well, you can clearly see the modified Medieval castle and a few later additions here and there. Chambord's area (the domain surrounded by a wall, the property if you prefer) is about the size of Paris with the castle in the middle. The castle itself is impactical to live in, the circulating spaces are way too big to heat but the staircase is magnificent, inspired to the architects by the works of Da Vinci himself. 15 kms away from Chambord, don't miss Cheverny, much smaller 17th century château but that inspired Marlinspike in Tintin (just take off the two most extreme parts and you have it). There is also a permament exhibit on Tintin in the smaller building nearby. Not far as well, don't miss Da Vinci's final resting place, Clos Lucé manor at Amboise; it's very nice. Washington DC map was drawn after Versailles, just place the Capitol in lieu of the Château... Versailles is only surpassed in the world by the Hermitage palace in St Petersbourg because... Peter the Great's visit to Versailles in 1715 marked him a lot... and he wanted to have the same but BIGGER...

The giant size of Versailles Castle which sounds surprising when you consider that the intitial project by Louis the 13th was just the building of a royal hunting lodge has quite a logical explaination : Louis the 14th changed his father's intitial plan and he built a castle which was able to host all the dukes, marquis, earls and barons of the Kingdom. In fact, after monarchy was shattered by the revolts of half the French Aristocracy against the King of France, who was none other than King Louis the 14th in his childhood, once he had come of age and won that war against the felon aristocrats (war known as "la Fronde"), Louis the 14th wanted to make sure that he could keep an eye on the lives of all the major aristocrats of the kingdom by having them stay permanently at his court at Versailles Castle, instead of them being able to plot against him from their remote castles all over France. And it worked : the king made the nobility believe that living near the King in Versaille was the best way to forward their interests through active daily royal courting, in order to gain new titles and new privileges, and all the dukes and earls left their home castles to live in Versaille castle, which had to be such a huge building to accomodate so many aristocrats and their servants... So Versailles castle was eventually designed as a little town indoors rather than the hunting lodge that it was initially intended to be, with all the most up to date luxury and entertainment that the elite could dream of as an other incentive to stay and enjoy...

In Danish our two words for castle originates in German; borg (burg) for a defensive military style castle. Slot (schloss) for what the French would call a chateaux; more a palace than a castle. Danish city names that end in -borg indicates that they were/are home to a medieval castle.

For the hunting lodge : The king went hunting with a majority of the noble, meaning this was also political and some nobles could sleep in guests rooms. It was a usefull tool to keep them in check.

But I think my favorites and the most beautiful ones for me would be Chambord and Chenonceau. They are beautiful in pictures and videos, but they are just marvellous in real life ! I actually think I have pictures on one of my device of one of those visits to Chambord with my family. Even with no skill in photography, it turns out amazing just because of the chateau and how beautiful itand it's surroundings are. So, I highly recommand visiting Chambord, Chenonceau and a lot of this chateaux if you visit France. Because they are breathtaking ! As said at 1:03, this is a choice of castles from ONLY the Loire valley, Nantes included, and 3 of Paris region. The castles of the other 10... regions can be very different. Some are as famous, like the Popes palace in Avignon, Pierrefonds, Haut Koenigsbourg, Tarascon, those of Périgord (Beynac, Castelnaud, etc) and Pyrénées (Carcassonne, Pau, Montségur), Vaux-le-Vicomte (near Paris) or the many fortifications of Vauban, etc... In the video Sully-sur-Loire (or Plessis-Bourré showed in your video about French regions) is less famous. At 4:13 Ussé castle inspired INDEED Charles Perrault, the author of Sleeping beauty tale who had a property nearby... That's why the original castle of Walt Disney was white... with blue roof tiles before 2005 and obviously inspired as well by the Loire valley castles for the front side and the Très riches heures du duc de Berry manuscript. The central dormer window, its gable design and pilasters, are those of Villandry, Chambord, Azay-le-Rideau or Amboise (side facade) castles. The small SYMETRICAL CORBELLED round turets are typically French and found in Paris (14th c. former Porte Saint-Denis or still on the low wall of Vincennes keep), in several castles like Montpoupon, Chenonceau, Trécesson, Saint-Florent-sur-Cher, Angers (castelet), Saumur (porch), Bridoré, bigger at Azay, or many neo-gothic castles of Anjou and Poitou (www.pinterest.fr/pin/prestige-property-group--181481059978932366/) or even those of Butrón in Spain, Moszna in Poland (a bit like Disney too !) or Marienburg in Germany, the first 2 having French elements probably influenced by Viollet-le-Duc books, and with the Auld alliance they probably influenced Scottish corbelled turets too, since they are called "tourelles" there which is a French word (Glamis ?, but the square ones are really Scottish at Colliston, Claypotts, etc) ! Little corbelled turets were used as well in a slightly different way at the top of some belfries in Flanders, like Lierre and Malines in Belgium or Douai and above all Rue in France (nearly identical to Disney). The precise machicolations design between the turets of Disney castle are those of Le Rivau, Laussel, Montsoreau or Chaumont larger tower, etc, while those of the 2 highest towers are from Neuschwanstein in Germany, but could as well be from Vitré square tower in France... and these high towers' battlements are from... Saumur, the old Louvre (destroyed), then Pierrefonds in France as well as one of the lower towers with a typically French double level of round rooves like at Ussé, Langeais eastern facade, Plessis-Bourré, Rambures, Pierrefonds or Vitré. The chapel's spire is like the one of Saint-Hubert in Amboise or the neo-gothic ones of Chantilly and Sainte Chapelle in Paris, its ridge decor and finials were used in 15th c. France (Saumur above all, Mehun, Louvre castles in the Très riches heures du duc de Berry manuscript : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Saumur#/media/File:Les_Tr%C3%A8s_Riches_Heures_du_duc_de_Berry_septembre.jpg) and its losange pattern roof is burgundian ! In adition to the said highest towers, Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for the other side of Disney castle, notably the gable with pyramidal lombard bands, but its rooves are metallic... instead ! I'm really amased that the Loire castle influence is ignored... on Wikipedia or not aknowledged by Disney in the references. But I don't know what is the inspiration of the stone rampart and protruding towers machicolations, perhaps Falstaff castle in UK or Italian castles. So a bit more than half of Disney castle is in fact inspired by French castles, but this has been mostly erased... by decorations added on the towers and above all the new multicolor... paint ! At 1:50 this is the portrait of king Francis I (typical sharp nose), not Gilles Berthelot. Chantilly has one of the finest old masters collection in France, some say the second mostly because of its Raphaël paintings, but it's not the second in number. Versailles, some Paris museums after the Louvre's 10.000 paintings... and some provincial fine arts museums have more paintings.

"Châteaux" VS "Castles" : non-french people will often refer to Renaissance castles using the word "château" when they will simply say "medieval castle" for, well medieval castles ;) And about those oversized "hunting lodges" you have to bear in mind that they were considerably smaller at the time : In the case of Chambord as well as Versailles, only the central piece was built at the time it was used this way, and without the "city on the roof" : François the First never saw the rest of the construction of Chambord : it was achieved after his death and as for Versailles, numerous additions were made along the following centuries, by several monarchs ;)

The round towers of certain castles indicate their medieval origin, when duchies and counties were constantly at war with each other. Round towers were more resistant to cannonballs than square ones. With the construction of the French country over the centuries these wars ceased and the castles lost their usefulness for war, they simply became ultra-luxurious residences for nobles and kings, hence the abandonment of the towers or battlements, useful in times of war.

The majority of royal castles are on the Loire because it should be known that from 1422, Paris is no longer officially the capital of France but the city of Tours which will remain until 1528 when King François 1st decides to return to Paris. It was for the dauphin, future king of France Charles VII from 1422, to escape the frequent riots of Parisians who had already seized the fortress of the Bastille on April 29, 1413 and forced him to flee Paris in 1418 while his father who was mad and his mother were held prisoners by the duke of Burgundy supported by the Parisians and allied with the King of England during the Hundred Years' War.Even having managed to reconquer Paris and drive the English out of the kingdom of France, Charles VII and his direct descendants will retain an aversion to Paris and thus build castles on the Loire to reside there.King Louis XIV, then a child, will also be forced to flee the Parisian riot in 1649 and will be traumatized by this memory from where his decision to build the Palace of Versailles where he settled permanently in 1682 , so that Paris once again lost its status as capital of France to Versailles. In October 1789, the revolutionary people of Paris march on Versailles to compel the King of France Louis XVI and his family to relocate to Paris in the Palais des Tuileries under the supervision of the Parisians who will end up storming this palace in 1792 for capture the royal family including the king and queen who will then be judged and guillotined. In 1871, a new Parisian riot the Commune forced the republican government this time to leave Paris to settle in the Palace of Versailles . The president of the republic Thiers reconquered Paris by the arms but Versailles remained capital of France until 1879 when the parliamentarians decided to return to Paris which became capital of France again until July 1940 where the government of Marshal Pétain after the German invasion of northern France decides to settle in Vichy, Paris is once again the capital of France, starting in August 1944 when it was liberated and continuing to this day. Général De Gaulle who also disliked the Parisians and their riots as well as the Elysée palace in Paris, having at one time considered installing the presidential palace in Vincennes, an old royal castle.

When they say "hunting lodge", it's because the King was taking the entire court with him and spend several months at one place for only 1 or 2 hunts. Of course, they also needed all the servants, and the servants' servants, the cooks, etc. It was so over the top that all those pointless expenditures were part of why the revolution took place.

It depends on what you find "amazing"... To me the Cathare Castels in south-west of France, also called "citadels of vertigo" are the most amazing, or in a completely different environnement Fort-La latte (near Cape Fréhel) ; someone else might think that Versailles is the most amazing or any other, famous or not... Tenth of thousands of castels sprayed in all regions ! Other topic : the Château des Ducs de Bretagne", allegedly not in Brittany... Of course, Nantes and his castle ARE in Brittany : The jacobine and parisian state has decided to take our economic capital city to weaken Brittany, as it's been the case for 5 centuries now ! They took a bunch of sleeping "départements" in the west of France, attached them to our economic locomotive, and called that insanity "Pays-de-la-Loire". But we are still demanding (and the vast majority of the population in "official" Brittany and in the Nantes' département (Loire-Atlantique) wants that too !) the return of our 5th département ! I read once an american historian whose conclusion was that Brittany had been the first piece of the french colonial empire, and definitely the most profitable one... No problem, though, with ordinary people from any region of France (even with Normans and Normandy that have been a pain in the ass for centuries, often allied with France to attack us😉).
