In the 80s, there were some discussions about harder sanctions for fouls in the Bundesliga. One proposal I remember was to add the injury time of the victim to the player's suspension. (e.g. the player would be suspended for 3 games, but if he had sent someone to hospital for three weeks, he wouldn't play those three weeks + the following three matches). I kind of liked that idea, especially for career - ending fouls.

I'm very surprised that Eric Cantona's dropkick to a fan of the opposing team, and Camilo Zuniga's knee-forward jump into Neymar's back weren't on that list. Very much agreed with your opinion on Axel Witsel's foul (Nr 9 on the list), it in fact caused a bit of an outcry in Belgium and there were some calls for having him banned from competition if memory serves.

The german goalkeeper was labeled after the match a Enemy of the French, since he didnt made a apology and made same shittalk Also an "interesting" football player was the german Walter Frosch, which had at his "peak" 18/19 yellow cards, where he became the reason to introduce the system, that football players get a suspension after getting to many yellow cards. (His nicknames were "Frosch the Kicker/Hitter"(since he kicked his opponents often), "Kicker/Hitter of the League" and "The Walking bar counter" (since he was also an alcoholic)

Always felt sorry for Martin Taylor with that tackle on Eduardo, he absolutely did not mean to do that, was just beaten to the punch. You could see how devastated he was afterwards. Horrendous thing to happen

Unfortunately, Keane's tackle was so dirty that it didn't simply hurt Haaland, but he also ended up retiring.

It’s a myth the Keane tackle retired him. He was already playing with an injury to his left knee (Keane tackle was the right knee) and that was the one he had surgery on in the summer and never returned to full fitness. Haaland finished the game, played for Norway midweek and played the next league game. He’s on record saying the tackle didn’t cause him to retire during FA inquiry after Keane’s autobiography where he stated it was pre-meditated. Still absolute horror tackle and just lucky Haaland’s right leg was raised, if it was planted I’ve no doubt it would have been a career ender.

Back in the old days football was quite brutal. Italy won the WC I 1934 specifically with the tactics to take as many opponents as possible. At this time you couldn’t even replace an injured player.

It's not a foul an accident, but the worst injury I've seen was Dave Buust playing for Coventry City v Man Utd and three players all went for the ball and it finished up Dave Buust's leg was so badly broken that his bones tore through his skin out through his sock. Peter smiechel was so shocked he vomited on the pitch. Dave Buust could never play again.

Most of these are tame compared to something i witnessed at an under 14s floodlit football practice, not a tackle but a sickening incident for us boys to witness. Mark Setchal had ran to recover the ball behind the goal (in the shadows) he suddenly buckled and fell to the floor screaming in pain, there was a hole about two foot deep and a foot wide and he'd put his leg right into it and snapped his shin bone in two.

With all the bad decisions on top of the bad tackling it's no wonder they've introduced V.A.R, and about time too. Now its been used for a few years, it has in my opinion, improved the game from the POV of less fake diving, less acting hurt, less dangerous tackling and fair off side decisions 👏 yes you may have to wait a bit before you know if your team has scored a goal while it gets checked by VAR but the benefits outweigh

During the 1960s and 1990s tackling were more brutal. Players like Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, Gone In 60 Seconds, Snatch) Stuart Pearce, Nobby Stiles, Ron 'Chopper' Harris, Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter and Jack Charlton.

And to say things used to be way, way worse. I seem to remember a program on BBC where they showed the (in)famous England-Germany Cup Final, with a modern referee marking everything that is considered a foul now. After 15 minutes or so, the match should have been stopped, as there weren't enough players on the field anymore.

The game has changed out of all recognition since I started playing and watching it . Nowadays tackling is almost impossible and it leads to more playacting and off the ball stuff . Having said that some nasty incidents among these . Some were accidents , others intentionally trying to hurt players and referees need to know The difference .The commentator is hilarious , it's true we are separated by a common language , at least where football terminology is concerned .

In the days before VAR the referee cannot always see the angle shown on TV so it will be up to the authorities to retrospectively act, but that doesn’t help the team during the match.

I was at that game between Glasgow Rangers v Steau Bucharest, Graeme Souness was our player-manager at the time and was known as a tough player. I remember thinking aw f#@k no, he's getting sent off but to our delight he didn't even get a yellow card. We did wince at the tackle though and although I did feel sorry for the Romanian player afterwards I didn't at the time as they were a dirty team themselves that night. The worst I recall seeing was during a Man Utd v Coventry City match where Coventry's Dave Buust suffered an horrific double fracture on his leg, although purely accidental it was nonetheless brutal to see live on tv. Finished the poor guys career.

Try to locate some footage of Leeds United games from the late 60’s to the mid’70’s when they were managed by Don Revie (?) and Billy Bremner was the team captain . The team were notorious for the number of fouls they committed, in particular one player was so often involved with fouls that even the Leeds supporters had created a chant about him. The player was called Norman Hunter. The chant ran as his name followed by “Bites your legs, bites your legs, bites your legs.” This refain was repeated ad naussium until a player from the opposition team was assisted off the field , usually on a stretcher.

Norman Hunter was one of the less violent Leeds players and he had a lot of ball skill. His reputation for brutality was undeserved; Jack Charlton, Billy Bremner, Terry Cooper and Johnny Giles were all much worse than him. Mind, Norman was definitely no angel (after all, he played for Leeds) and to say that he was usually less culpable than his team mates is certainly damning with faint praise. 🤕😉

A lot of really bad fouls don't make it to video, I saw more than a few when going to live matches in the 80's and 90's. I remember David Speedie going over the top on Sunderland captain Gary Bennett who had just returned from a knee operation, targeting the area - 'Benno', who I have met personally and was not just a good defender but is also a really nice guy, reacted by grabbing Speedie by the throat and bundling him over an advertising hoarding! Ben Thatcher, who is shown in your video playing for Manchester City and delivering a forearm smash, had form for that - In his Wimbledon days he did similar to Nicky Summerbee and broke his jaw. Finally, one tackle that wasn't a foul but was probably the most horrendous injury I have ever seen in football was during a Manchester Utd vs Coventry match, two defenders came in on the side of Coventry player David Busst and keeper Peter Schmeichel from the front diving for the ball. Busst's leg broke in 3 places and his career was over, some of the players who saw it (Including Schmeichel) had to have counselling afterwards.

Thanks for the video, keep up the good work. I have been going to the football since the 70s, it was much worse then, players are so protected now in comparison, yet some feign injury and roll all over the floor like idiots at times. As for these tackles most were horrific (I was actually present at all the Arsenal ones), but the idiot doing the commentary was by far the worst thing, didn't have a clue. It's only the last couple of years that V. A. R. has been available so refs had to have seen it and act instantly without the benefit of tv camera angles. Unfortunately I can't say V. A. R. has made much improvement they still make terrible decisions with multiple cameras, slow motion etc that drastically alter the result, sometimes costing teams dearly. It's never going to be perfect but the quality of the refs these days is much lower than 20 odd years ago, they have no stature or authority and aren't respected by the players (although that is the fault of the players).

As had been said before elsewhere, the difference between football and rugby is that in football you spend 90 minutes trying to show how badly hurt you are, and in right you spend 80 minutes trying to show how badly hurt you aren't. (I played a full practice game with a hairline fracture in my wrist when I was 15...)
