For our date in the UK, not only is it smallest to largest (which organisation-wise makes a lot of sense), we're also writing it the way we say it, too! It's more common for us to, for example, say "4th of July" instead of "July 4th". While the latter is quicker to say, it doesn't flow as naturally in conversation than saying it the former way. Definitely interesting

The UK (or just Scotland?) has used the MM/DD/YY date structure in the past I'm not sure when or why it changed. I've only noticed it from doing genealogy and looking at official records from 19th & early 20th century. My research has mainly been in Scotland so I'm not 100% certain this was UK wide.

Other companies have also started laying fibre everywhere (well towns anyway), with two other companies rolling it out where I live since the first company laid cables. While the top speeds are still usually only gigabit (up and down each that speed) it is probably more widely available here. I know I have many friends in the USA that struggle to get a decent connection and many of them choose houses based on what internet they can get (gamers mostly you see).

In much of the eastern side of the UK it doesn't rain that much, but we have a lot of raw, dreary weather, and - global warming is changing this - it has rarely been that hot. ( So it is rare for a UK house to have air conditioning.) Springs in particular tend to be late and cold, although autumns tend to be late and warm. This is why our beer is often only slightly cold, and our tea is hot. Both iced would be too miserable much of the time.

RE: Dates: Yes we generally say "12th January 2023" in the UK, which is the same way we write it. RE: Sports: Yes - we tend to lose at them internationally. RE: Tea: I personally don't like it but it is super-popular here. I wouldn't say we add lots to tea - some folk just drink it as-is whereas others might add some milk and/or one-to-two teaspoons of sugar. RE: NHS: Part of the benefit of a state-run medical service is that the state also restricts products and prices. A group called NICE are responsible for reviewing the price/performance of drugs and deciding if the NHS is allowed to buy them. If a drug is too expensive compared to its benefit then NICE won't sign off on it. This can lead to some controversy around treatments not being made available, but it also forces companies to think about the pricing of their products as if they charge too much, the NHS just won't buy. There are also laws on branded drugs here - if a company were to invent a new medicine tomorrow then they would only be able to sell it under their brand name for a fixed time before they had to make it available under a generic name which also brings about a better price. I think I remember the company that makes Gaviscon getting in trouble for not releasing the generic version of it in the right timespan a few years ago. We also remove drugs from the pool that have bad side-effects so while we may not have the latest, cutting-edge treatments, we don't end up with treatments that are ultimately worse than the problem they treat.

I would imagine the gaps in public bathrooms were left there for safety. So if someone was to suffer a heart attack or health issue whilst on the toilet, someone could still potentially crawl under to unlock the door and help, as opposed to potentially not being able to get to someone or notice any issue when it's fully closed off. But we do have the sign on the door to show if its being used while the door is locked or if the cubicle is free to use.

@@paulfranklin8636 Yeah tournaments, but the way thats sold is disingenuous, my point was that barely anyone has won a World Cup and not much difference with euros. I don't think we necessarily have faster internet, but from what I've heard it's cheaper. For example I just signed up for 1Gb internet with Vodafone (which uses the same OpenReach network as most other providers) for a 2 year contract, and it's £36 a month (~$46) with no sign up charge. Being a much smaller, denser country though I guess it's less costly to run the fibre cables needed to provide the majority of the population with fast internet.

The Hotel had plug sockets in the bathroom and nearthe sink ! ..we wouldn't use it and used the plug socket in the bedroom as we wa scared incase we got electrocuted 🙈. Going through passport control my daughter said mum you have your finger prints taken here ... The man said left hand mam..l looked at him .He said it again .There was just a little opening . He said it again ..l was looking at him and at his desk bit and l actualy said ..But wheres the ink pad !! Omg ..like in the old films. Its was just a scanner thing .He must have thought lve got a right one here ..l.burst out laughing . Also l have never seen Muffins so big in all my life like those in that hotel Metro. New York New Years Eve we ended up having an early night as we couldnt get near Times Sq at 5pm...all sealed off capacity only ..shoukd have got thee at sat 2pm . ..we wa freezing . Police kept saying " Go down the other Block " That was also blacked of railings they also said Go down the other block ..they had big rifle s and all in black with just eyes showing as it was cold. .so we just went back to the hotel . We fell asleep ..my daughter felt ill .. brrr what a memory !

By far the most sensible date format is the ISO (International Standards Organisation) format of yyyy-mm-dd. It inherently lists things in chronological order (2022-12-25 (december) comes before 2023-07-12 (july)). The next best is dd/mm/yyyy which the UK uses but it doesn't sort well. The US mm/dd/yyyy makes no sense whatsoever, and if it is because that is how folk say dates then I recommend they change their speech patterns.
