Tampons don't have an extra tax, that is just the normal 19% sales tax on all goods except for some certain stuff like books which are taxed 7% only. So the idea to sell tampons "disguised" as a book is a move to raise attention that such basic needs should not be taxed.

@@korneliusfrik9545 well, he discusses a picture which is captioned that a German circus uses holograms of elephants etc. to provide the illusion but make it a cruelty free experience. And in the next sentence he begins discuss animals in zoos as if it that were the suggestion or the topic of the photo. Even German zoos do not have hologram animals but the real thing, and despite the fact that Germans are pretty good at making their zoos as animal-friendly as possible, it is still arguable in how far that experience is cruel free - in particular - to animals that have, in nature, huge territories to cover or live in very different climate zones….

12:22 I rode the Schwebebahn (literally floating train) yesterday. The reason it was built is simply the whole city lies in a fairly tight valley so there isn't that much flat space to build rails on the ground. We have regular trains as well but the Schwebebahn is more convenient as it has a higher stop density, is cheaper compared to regular trains and has much more frequent departures. It also is unaffected by traffic or the frequent troubles of the Deutsche Bahn (German railway company, known to be delayed often). Usually every 5 minutes you can get a train that services stops from Vohwinkel to Oberbramen (8 miles long).

22:28 "Schreiner" (cabinet maker/joiner) here. No, You don't have to build a beer tab. Most jobs require a 3 year training, where you learn the fundamentals for the job. It always ends with exams and in the case of craftsmen, they'll have the additional "Gesellenstück", where they're supposed to show their skills. When I had to do this, I had 1 month to design a piece of furniture (blueprints etc.). I could do anything, as long as certain requiremnts where included, like a drawer and a traditional joining technique for example. Then the design went through approval (and grading) and if there weren't any changes required, I had 2 weeks to build the piece. Most "Berufsschulen" (job schools?) would do an exhibition for those pieces every year.

Just to be clear: Not all craftsmen have to produce a journeyman's piece in Germany. Only those whose trade also produces things that are within the scope of proportionality. Plumbers, (automotive/industrial) mechatronics engineers, roofers, bricklayers, etc., for example, do not have to produce one.

Most days the trainees work in a shop or as part of a team at the customers site (whatever is the norm for that trade) under the supervision of a qualified tradesman and some days at the Berufsschule where teachers teach them theory of their trade, necessary science stuff and basic business stuff

Assuming you are talking about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights referenced in the video (as the "human rights charta" referenced by you could point to many different things, but the name itself does not exist for any treaty et al.) you are very wrong. a) "[...] has never been signed/ratified by the US. Never." No, of course not. Just as it has not been signed by any other country. Because it is not a treaty that has to be signed and ratified to become international law. Instead it was a resolution (217 to be precise) adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948. Guess who voted for it: The US. Guess who was one of the driving forces behind it: Eleanor Roosevelt, as in the First Lady of the USA at the time... b) "Technically speaking people in the US do not have basic human rights." Might I suggest you start by reading the US Declaration of Independence? You really could stop after "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.", but if this still isn't enough for you, continue with the constitution and mainly the first 10 amendments (ie the Bill of Rights - it's kind of in the name, don't you think?). And then you have the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and so on. PS. No, I'm not American, I'm German. I just don't like blatantly false statements.

Actually they still haven't ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children. Every other member of the United Nations has done so.

Definitely! It seems they used pistachio ice cream for it. 😅 Usually it's vanilla ice cream spaghetti over a good amount of whipped cream, topped with strawberry sauce and possibly a few chopped strawberries (varies seasonally).

4:35 It's not about whether they are low cut or not, it's the fact that they have legs. Female gymnasts were required to wear legless costumes in the past, similar to bathing suits. Many still do, but it's no longer a requirement at the Olympics.

everything that is considered an essential product, like water, bread or toilet paper is taxed with 7%, anything that is considered a luxury product, like caviar, wine and lipstick (cosmetics) is taxed with 19% since i'm a guy, i didn't know that tampons were taxed with 19% but that is, in my opinion, incredibly stupid. those should be seen as an essential item like toilet paper...

Thank you. Some commenters were trying to compare tampons to razors, but that's not really the same. Toilet paper and nappies are really the closest comparison to period products. While I also think other hygiene products should have the 7% tax rate, period products are simply even more essential than razors or shower gel. And women use razors, too, so if they are taxed at 19% both men and women pay more.

But unfortunately it is incorrect. Toiletpaper is taxed with 19 % Bread (correct) with 7 % Water is special cause normally it is taxed with 7 % but when it is carbonized water (the most boddled water you can buy in a supermarket) is taxed with 19 % (like applejuice or softdrinks). Luxery-produkts often have other taxes on top - like "Tabaksteuer" fot tobacco, "Schaumweinsteuer" for sparkling wine or "KFZ-Steuer" for cars. Our Taxsystem isn't logical like: "You need it daily or to stay healthy so it's lowered taxation" It is formed since the monarchy (e.g. "Schaumweinsteuer") by lobbiism and history and needs to be reformed. Edit: medicine is taxed with 19 % (pure luxury, isn't it?) Sry for my english - I'm German

Feminine hygiene enables participation in basic activities such as regular school attendance and the like, and this is a global issue. That is why barrier-free access to it is fundamental to gender equality.

5:40 Yes, we have to create that emergency lane BEFORE police or ambulance etc. are coming. Usually when traffic jam is clogging up. BUT some BMW and Audi drivers think, they are better, and use the emergency lane.

@@Juiccyfruit1sadly though, in Germany the penalty is, in my opinion to lenient. You get a 240€ fine, 2 points, and a license suspension for 1 month. At least the fine should be much higher; it should be at least 800€, if you ask me, but even that would be far less than other countries fine a driver.

The parking spots for women are usually better-lit, with security cameras, near an exit/entrance to the building, and often wider - not because women can't park but because taking kids or a baby out of a car can be difficult in a narrow parking space.

@@Bleed1987 Parking spaces are very often private property, so the owner has house rules. It doesn't matter if there's no law for female parking spaces, if the owner designated these parking spaces that way you aren't allowed to park there as a man and the owner has the right to fine you.

19:32 - That aquarium is past tense. It was inside a hotel lobby. That thing imploded a few years ago. Luckily in the wee morning hours. iirc on the human side of things no one hurt. On the fish side of things, though. 22:42 - A 'Gesellenstück' is a proof of craftsmanship piece. At the end of your 3 year trainee program, exists for every trade, you have to do a project that shows everything you've learned. It's the practical exam. The carpenter needs to come up with an idea, a design and then build it. So here the carpenter wanted a tap. He could have done a desk, cupboard - whatever really.

When I was a child, there was a Bible in the drawer of the bedside table in almost every hotel room. My mother would always collect them and take them to reception - that was her friendly form of protest. To be honest, I haven't looked in the drawers of the bedside tables when I stayed in hotels for ages, but I don't think it's that common these days. On a school trip, a classmate of mine swapped the Bible for the Kama Sutra for fun. The hotel then complained to our school, which made the whole school talk about it and my classmate was celebrated as a hero and a rebel against the establishment. Good old times…!

the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed by the UN in 1948. It is really short but comprehensive. The U.S. signed it as well, and nevertheless, does not adhere to it (such as in keeping the death penalty or torture and degrading treatment or punishment (Guantanamo), equality before the law (when the Supreme Court just pardoned Trump for his crimes), arbitrary arrest, detention or exile (as also proposed by the incoming administration, etc. etc. etc.), which the declaration ALL mentions as going against human rights….

It only establishes over and over again that people are useless because they are utterly unwilling to live up to the high standards they set for themselves… BTW, the document is at the core of the work of many human rights groups such as Amnesty International, who have been able to use the argumentation of the declaration and the many nations‘ signing of the document as the foundational argumentation to pressure governments to live up to the standards or getting hundreds of thousands of f.e. political prisoners such as journalists out of their incarceration. Ask them how useless they think it is…

@@Attirbful When a rule is not followed, because it sets high standards that people don't want to and can not fullfill, then this rule is pretty much useless. I agree, that the human rights are used to put moral pressure on countrys or institutions in some instances. But the number of cases where this moral pressure was helpful and justified, is outweighed by the misusage of the human rights declaration in my opinion. For example Article 14, "the right of Asylum" or Article 25, "the right of a certain standard of living" are immoral, harmful and open the doors for misusage.

I visited TU Munich für a 3 day course and used those slides a lot. There are slide mats at the top you should use which help protect your trousers. You swing yourself into a black hole. The first moment feels nearly like falling straight down before it transitions into a more normal sliding. Great fun! And if you talk into the slide you can speak with a person at the other end without shouting.

well, german woman here, these parking spots are always right at the entrance/exit of the parking garage and have good lighting at night, so you (hopefully, its still not 100% save obv.) can leave fast and save without pooping your pants while walking to your vehicle. Men can park there, but then they are assholes. same with parent-child spots for people withput children. you can park there. but the people will look at you and probably even talk to you.

Kinda true, but also there can be weirdos that go inside to take pictures or whatever and if they're dressed as a woman, people won't question them and it might go undetected. If a man walks into the women's restroom people will say something in a lot of cases.

@user-me8hy8ew4o in Germany we don't have these stupid slits in our cabin doors like in the US. If you want to take pictures you have to lay on the floor, stick your hand beneath the door or climb onto the toilet to take pictures from above. Believe me when I say, you would notice that.

The outdoor store with the pool is Globetrotter in Munich. I've been on that pool before and they also have a -30°C cold chamber on the 3rd floor to test winter jackets. The cold chamber comes complete outfitted with benches and a table made from ice blocks while the pool sometimes has a fountain running.

22:35 No you don't have to build a beer tab to become a carpenter. You have to create something with the material, the job is working with. So a metal worker has to weld something. A baker, my cousin is one, has to bake something. He made a statue of an owl from long-lasting dough. That thing was not eatable. It became a kind of plaster. However, the job education here lasts 3 years of practical work and schooling. And craftman jobs have those as final test of your skills.

Not only handcrafted things - as a nurse, you have to be watched while taking care of a person with special requests like changing a bandage or if the person has a special desease p.e. tetraplegic.. as a kindergardener you have to do a project (also watched by teachers) for the kids and write an essay about it, reflecting pedagogic strategies, what was good, what went wrong,..

The Shopping cart cleaner was installed during the pandemic, yes. BUT the Idea came from the owner of this perticular supermarket way earlier, because customers complained about the handle bars. and sometimes remainings of spilled drinks and stuff. During the pandemic the Owner of the Market asked local goverments and market visitors for donation/funding and built that cleaning station from scrap with the help of experienced tech companies all around germany. To my knowledge you can still use it today. The Gesellenstück (journeyman piece) is an object which has to be built entirely by the apprentice (Lehrling) at the and of his training. The object will be then inspected by the training personnel from the company and a jury of teachers and inspectors send by the local Chamber of Crafts. The Gesellenstück is like the final exam for all crafters.

But even then we have certain conventions like: Don´t leave your trash or worse glass shards, kids will play here in the morning. Don´t be to loud, playgrounds are often located in residential areas and if people are pissed about the noise they will call the cops. Don´t laugh to hard if you discover your drunk aunt stuck in the slide because even if the alcohol suggested it she isn´t a teen anymore. And so on, you get the general drift...

The Kunsthofpassage is NOT a building, the Kunsthofpassage is a passage/a court between several houses and most of them have different decorative and arcitectural features, including this house, and on the ground floors are several artisanal boutiques and fair trade shops. It's one my favourite places in Dresden. Also, you do NOT walk on the brigde in Kromlau, it's purely decorational.

A kindergarten in Germany is not a school. It is just the more common, colloquial term for "Kindertagesstätte" (shortened Kita) where you'll find children from the ages one to approx. six attending. A daycare institution. School starts from six years onwards. I also gather from your reaction that you might have never been to a circus. Totally different from a zoo. Not even comparable.

Kindergarten is not another word for Kindertagesstätte. These are two completely different care models. A Kindergarten is only a care facility for children between the ages of 3 and 7, in daytime. Kindertagesstätten are care facilities with extended care options, such as a crèche (0 - 3y), a Kinderhort (after-school care for elementary school students) or night care (8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.), in addition to the Kindergarten.

I worked in a couple of hotels in Germany and they had Gideon bibles in there specifically. Not even my boss could tell who put them there and if they were orders or if they were put there unsolicited. I also remember a guy from the Gideons handing out pocket bibles in front of my school when it ended. That’s also why the name „Gideon“ rings a bell

9:11 these pods are called „Ulmer Nester“ from the city Ulm. They got upgraded a little for safety and from my knowledge, they put them out every winter. And I think other cities now have also iterations from the pods.

I live near Ulm and never have seen 'em. Perhaps I just need to visit Ulm in Winter. Anyways, it's a really good idea for homeless people. It solves their problem sleeping in the open when it's freezing out there. But it's no long term solution for homeless people in general, which needs to be addressed too.

Emergency lane forming is a law all over Europe, it is not specific to Germany . And yes, you must of course form that lane before an accident occurs. I.e. as soon as traffic starts slowing down significantly you have to drive all to the left (leftmost lane), or all to the right (middle lane, if existent; and rightmost lane). When your car comes to a halt, it is too late to move out of the way of emergency vehicles.

Spaghetti Eis/ spaghetti ice cream is actually so freaking good. It is made from two bowls of ice cream take it for a machine, but do it like spaghetti and then they put it on a plate and under the spaghetti ice cream it’s whipped cream and some toppings on it. ZOO is totally different than Circus. Zoo provides natural envirorment (as close as possible) and the animals are maintained by professional zoologists that help to conserve the endangered animals that could face extinction if left in their original place. Przewalski's horse was saved by zoos and was reintroduced to it's natural habitat of mongolia years later. Circus is stressful, unnatural, loud envirorment. Animals are forced to perform unnatural feats and often maintained by people with limited animal care education with strong profit motive...

Also, a circus cage where animals are housed between shows is very different from an enclosure that mimics the natural habitat of an animal. To be fair, you can argue about the size of the zoo enclosures, but as you said, a zoo does much more than showcase animals for visitors, which is ultimately a good thing.

This was a "Krankentransport" (sick person transport) and not an "Rettungswageneinsatz" (emergency ambulance) - the latter would amount to ~350€-970€. But you still only pay 10€ on that :)

Still an order of magnitude cheaper than the US. But German ambulances are usually operated by non-profit organization such as the Red Cross or the Knights Hospitaller (Order of St. John / Order of Malta) so that might figure into the price as well.

I literally just came home from a four day vacation at the Tropical Islands resort. It was my third time being there and it just continues to be absolutely awesome! You simply can't imagine how incredibly huge this dome is until you've been inside it yourself. I shot a photo of the access tower for the multiple adult's waterslides next to the dome wall. I don't know how tall that tower is exactly, but to get to the topmost level, you have to climb a staircase with exactly 99 steps. So it's pretty tall. And still, you can barely even make out that the dome wall behind it in the photo is actually curved, it describes a semicircle right there because it's at the eastern end of the dome. It's just unbelievably large.

The 'castle' at 18.28 is one of the old city gates in Frankfurt, the Eschenheimer Turm, built in 1410. It's where you'd have entered the city coming from the north. There used to be a moat, these days, however, there's a bar at ground level. A 'Geselle' (translated 'fellow') is someone who finished an aprenticeship in crafting, like woodworking or carpentry. You need a Meister (master, someone who 'masterd' the trade, yes there are certifications for both) to teach you, and when you near the end of your aprenticeship you have to deliver a 'Gesellenstück' to prove what you've learned.

22:45 Meisterstück refers to a project piece where you have to plan, budget and build an actual build to get your Meister title. (Beside writen and verbal test of course). It is to show that you have the actual skills to make something not just the theory. Also many work based Master titles have "Meisterstücke" including smithing, carpentry and gold smithing. The thing that you are building is up to you based on some guidlines and you get to keep it (even when you fail) so people choose often cool things for themselve to make. Like the beertap sink.

so, it's not illegal/ no violation of German traffic laws to park there as a man - just rude. This is in contrast to pushing spots for handicapped persons, which is an official traffic rule, so that it's illegal to wrongly use a marked parking spot for handicapped people. But also, as the previous commenter said, parking there as a man can be violating the Terms of Use of the parking facility

I´ve been to Tropical Island twice when I was younger, and it was AMAZING There are Hotels in there, one is like a Camping Space with tents on sand, you buy things by holding a chip up to a scanner and before you leave you actually pay so you dont have to take money with you everywhre, there´s restaurants, several different kinds of pools, an outdoor space, and the place I spent most time in, the outdoor slide. Once you enter you slide for a bit, end up in a pool, from whre you can choose two different ways to go, and once more you pause in a pool and go again- you end up in the same pool no matter what, but it was so much fun as a child. Thre are also slides indoors, and theres a hot air balloon where you can buy a tour. You are literally tied to a guy and he walks around while you sit up there. Theres also some light show stuff at night, and I think there is even a fitness area, as well as a sauna and I remember smth about animals Now, all of this is from like, 7 years ago or so, so things might have changed or be a bit wrong in detail, but the general stuff is definitly right.. It was amazing going there, especially since I got to take a friend with me both times. Honestly, even if things turned bad with one of them and I dont have contact to the other, either, I´m so happy to have remembered this today, and one day before Christmas no less!

The snowy bridge looks like the Geierlay Hängeseilbrücke in the Mosel region. It is pretty long and quite high above a steep valley. Pretty stable but you still get some motion in it while walking across.

Yes, Ryan, holograms are real, it's not actually that complex. Just like jetpacks and flying cars, it just turns out that, unlike in sci-fi, holograms aren't all that useful.

The pong crosswalk is not real. The very funny video presenting the thing was a student project for special effect work. The aquarium doesn't exist anymore. It catastrophically collapsed some years ago.

3th Flor !!! (let me be a smartass) in Germany first floor is always after climbing up some stairs - In an elevator, the ground floor is always indicated with zero and the 1 stands for the first floor above the ground floor

That McBoat is regularly used, I worked on the other side of the canal years ago. On sunny days there have been several smaller boats a day. And of course that McDonalds has a regular drivethrough on the road side of the building.

Some of them are not true any more. As others mentioned, the aquarium bursted 2022. Tampons are taxed with 7% since 2020. And the different coloured lights in Berlin can't be true any more, because selling old types of lightbulbs is illegal in the EU since 2009.

Last point isn't true. Street lights are not light bulbs. The Sodium gas lights are as efficient as LED. And for my eyes they are better because their yellow light somehow doesnt dazzle me through my glasses. I hate the new bright LED that substitute broken gas lights - I can see less around them.

the lights is about street lights/lamps. those only get replaced when they dont work anymore. my hometown still got a lot very orange lights, most probably still working since GDR times or shortly after.

Why cannot Englishspeakers tell the difference between ie and ei , its Wiesbaden not Weißbaden , it is Krieg not Kreig and it is Ei and not Ie. In understand the pronounciation part but not the spelling part. Its like 2/3s that in a word ie and ei are in the wrong order with you.

Because brain is not really reading words as much as pulling the meanings and sounds from your memory when it sees "somewhat simillar" clusters of signs. You can mix letters in words but if you keep firs and last letter correct than your brain will "unscramble" the middle. Unless you pay attention to the reading this process is fully automatic. That is why you struggle to read unfamiliar words even in your own language sometimes and typos are common when text is not proofreaded. English has way more words with "ei" than "ie" so the brains of ENG speakers are just doing what they are used to do.

Because they are English speakers and not German speakers 🙄 Why can't Germans pronounce "th". Or spell double letters when they shouldn't. Same thing.
