The "Knitter" Tshirt was literally a tshirt with the word "KNITTER" printed on it. The font used on the Tshirt was similar (although not identical) to the one typically used on car license plates, and the woman had a handbag strap stretching across the first T - this all combined to make the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system to pick the word up and "recognise" it as the car plate KN19 TER... Once the couple challenged the ticket, it was withdrawn - but it shows the potential drawbacks for automating these systems...

The Queen/King has the right to claim any unmarked Mute Swans (tagged as someone's property) in open waters in the UK though they only exercise this right in a small area around Windsor Castle.[ Side note; Pubs called 'The Swan with Two Necks' is a misspeaking of 'Swan with Two Nicks' the Vintners (wine sellers guild) had the right to claim swans and marked them with two notches or 'nicks' on their beaks, these days they just ring them]. Carling is a lager beer and it does indeed taste like piss.

My Gran had a huge ginger tom cat who was a bit like Grebo in the Terry Pratchett books. Any attempt to stroke him would result in blood & tears.🩸😭 He spent most of his time outdoors decimating the local wildlife, especially rabbits which he left on a big slate table outside the kitchen door as a thoughtful gift and once even brought back a mink he'd killed looking very pleased with himself. 🐇🐇🐇🩸🪦😸 Later when my grans health deteriorated she moved in with us and we had to pack up her belongings. Then somebody said "What about the cat?". 😾 Nobody fancied trying to catch him and there was some debate whether he'd be happier staying where he was and living off the bunnies he slaughtered, but my mother insisted my gran would want the cat so my father was volunteered for the job. The cat was located asleep on a broad slate wall in the garden, which was his favourite sunning place, so my dad grabbed a picnic blanket, sneaked up on him and then bundled him up and quickly put him into a cat basket whilst he tore himself free with much swearing, screeching, growling and hissing. He quickly settled into his new home and soon every other cat and dog lived in terror of this demonic new addition to the neighbourhood.😼😈 His new favourite game was to hide at the top of the stairs and attack me. I used to take a childen's chair made out of wicker with me and fend him off like a lion tamer!🦁🪑😱 Weirdly he soon adopted me as his favourite and would sleep on my bed. I still miss him!😀

For clarification, the news presenters consisted of mainly people, until around the mid-eighties. Nowadays, around 10% are people. The others are just mostly-deaf robots. Cash in account= someone/something willing to sell any story, however potentially dangerous / horrendously unethical, etc.

The response is because of course, the US Marines is the sub-par equivalent of HM Royal Marines, a senior unit by several hundred years. The Girl Guides can take 'em 😉

British Royal Marines are commandos, so in America they'd probably be called a special operations force. Here, commandos are just elite infantry. As a stereotype, your basic military is undertrained and over equipped, especially comparing Marines. I suspect the joke is that our girl guides are as well trained as your Marines. Or it could be that your girl guides are as well equipped as our Marines. Either way, pretty funny.

The US has "girl scouts" rather than "guides", so I suspect it's the former.

@@barriehull7076 I've heard several differt stories, like only the Swans in the Thames, or all Swans, etc. It doesn't really matter I still think the mug was a reference to that.

It is true, apparently, Americans really do not get Sarcasm. There is nothing "polite but slightly passive aggressive" about sarcasm. It is the verbal equivalent of 'ripping you a new one!
