It's also why they're shouting, kicking windows and being aggressive. They're not actually angry, nor are they power tripping like many people seem to think. They're trained to do this precisely for the reason you highlighted. It's an effective tactic.
@rexex345
@rexex345 Ай бұрын
the tactic is called shock and awe, which is in and of itself meant to prevent a perp from being able to draw a weapon if they do have one. We don't have pistols legally but it can still be a possibility and we do have knife crime which is an even bigger threat in these tight quarters encounters so the tactic is to basically stun the person for long enough to overwhelm and detain them before they can think to pull a weapon. Even armed, our monkey brains have a habit of shutting down when confronted by that.

You should watch the clip of the British armed response teams responding to report of an armed man. He shoots at this police team on 2 different occasions. Neither time do the police return fire. Eventually the police talk him down and he surrendered. When asked why they had not returned fire they said that they thought it sounded like blanks. That's British armed police, picked for non reactive personalities, highly trained and usually with about 10 years normal unarmed police experience. That's who we give guns to in our country and how we train them. I cannot believe it when I see the nervous trigger happy inexperienced US cops you give guns to.

Sadly, some law breakers consider a police chase as a "Badge of Honour"". Something they can brag about to their criminal friends, hence the passenger live streaming it. The police cars with no visible stickers or lights is referred to as an "unmarked" cars. They are used to blend in so they are not so obvious to the those are more of a 'Career' criminal. Generally UK police don't use the PIT maneuver. The UK Police use what's called the T-PAC method which is referred to at the start of the video. T-PAC is "Tactical Pursuit And Containment". It is a method where the police use 3 cars to box in the target vehicle, (one in front, one to the side and one to the rear), and push it to the side of the road trapping the people inside the car. They then use lots of noise, shouting and smashing of windows to cause confusion while they grab and arrest people.

in the UK police chases never usually run for any more than 10-15minutes, (given the speed they travel at) but Uk police tend to follow in built up areas and wait for a moment to strike with minimal damage to property and zero damage to persons, or wait until they subjects crash themselves (with that being out of their own controll and if the pursuit is become to dangerous to members of the public the police will call off the chase or drastically reduce the distance they follow at). When they do stop a car the objective is to distract the driver (from driving the car) usually by smashing as many panels of glass (to get a humans fight or flight response tp defend themselves from shards of glass) to get the occupant/s to duck for cover give the police more time to gain access and arrest the vehicle (removing the keys from the ignition) before arresting the occupants. Also the black car you involved was a BMW aswell and that would be a firearms unit. its the typical firearms car of the UK, they have marked cars aswell but they are normally used for major events. Im more suprised that yorkshire have the funding to be able to afford having their force using BMWs as patrol cars... where i live in the UK the police use mainly underpowered Skoda's.... or tractors.... PIT maneuver is an option but our police usually favour TPAC which is boxing them in and bring it to a hault that way. A lot of our roads don't have a lot of run off space either side so high chance a PIT = wrap them round a tree or something. The extra units that showed up were probably running paralel to the chase instead of all slotting in behind too. They'll position ahead to block certain junctions too to gradually gain control of where the chase is going. Also worth mentioning in N Ireland around Belfast there are a number of roads that were redesigned specifically to slow, bottleneck and give PSNI options to deal with joyriders. Not far out of West Belfast theres a stretch of the road raised with boggy land either side specifically for police to shove cars into to get stuck and after that there's a bottleneck with walls either side and a layby at the end for police to set up spikestrips. Oh and cherry on top, PSNI are all armed AND there's a higher than zero chance instead of an SUV grinding you into a wall, it's a 5 tonne armoured Landrover that looks like it was brought back from Afganistan, painted white and blue flashy lights stuck on top. PSNI don't mess around and get the coolest toys of all UK police 😂

The car scene here in NI revolves mostly around two major things, the 'Port' (which is short for the coastal towns of Portstewart and Portrush, where Port Sundays are held) and 'Felt-Spec' (which is a term that means a car that has been modified to standards popularised in the Mid-Ulster town of Magherafelt during the 90s/early 2000s (Felt_Spec is usually accompanied with lowering a car via cutting the springs with an angle grinder, modifying the engine to produce copius amounds of black smoke, which we clal 'reek', and covering the cars in obscene stickers to really make a point) Hope you see this comment, as I feel it could be a unique experience and something a little different for the channel! They jumped on top of the vehicle there as a distraction tactic. The more noise you can make and intimidating you can be completely throws the criminals in the car. Pit maneuvers are generally seen as too dangerous in the UK (especially in cities where there are loads of people around), the police in the UK tend to use TPAC (tactical pursuit and containment), which can involve boxing in the suspect and using numbers to the police's advantage I realise that this has been said a few times so sorry about that XD

We don’t have police chases in Guernsey BUT police cars are nice BMWs. We do have those stinger strips - but think that’s just for practice. I love Channel 5 for UK police chases etc! However on few occasions we’ve had cars speeding and driving over edge of road into harbour! Actually was behind a lorry that fell into the yacht marina. Found it really exciting! 😂

When they stop the car the idea of the rush it and smash windows is to disorientate the criminals so they are confused and in cuffs before they know it. Seems extreme but they get the bad guys in cuffs pretty blooming quickly

PIT manouvers aren't as effective in the UK where most cars have manual transmissions. When you PIT an automatic, you tend to stall out the engine as the car rolls backwards and the trans gets all tangled which takes a bit fo time to sort out and get the engine re-started. With a manual, the driver tends to dip the clutch then immediately drive off again once they've come to a stop.

Oh I remember this video. It amazes me that people would even consider stealing and "joyriding" other people's vehicles. And yes in the UK we often don't have armed police because there's much less gun crime in the UK. I've seen USA police chases on KZbin and they are wildly different to those in the UK.

I'm surprised nobody has commented on the 2 pedestrians, who can be seen on the police car footage, very close to where they trapped the car between the wall and the cop cars. If the unmarked police car hadn't been quick enough to get in front of the stolen car, I've no doubt that the driver of the stolen car would have continued down that foot path, wiping out at least one of the pedestrians (one managed to get off the footpath into what was probably a private gate/entrance). Also, they smashed the windows because how else are they going to grab the three idiots in the stolen car that is hard wedged between the fence and the police cars? The doors can't be opened and the police aren't going to move their vehicles, giving them a chance to take off again.

I used to live in York - always kind of weird to see places you know so well on TV. The chase covers quite a large area of York, they kind of go round in a circle then back on themselves. Some of the roads are really narrow - the bit with the cyclist is only a little more than 2 cars wide. The traffic police unit based in York has largely switched to Volvos now.

UK police don't do PITting as a matter of course - it's far too dangerous. Though it can be done as an absolute last resort at low speed. Instead, the preferred technique is to block and/or box a car in - it's much safer and less likely to result in damage to the police cars

Yeah we have some fairly "beefy" police cars. Ever since the 80's and the birth of the "Boy racer" cops realised they needed cars that can keep up or out perform the kids on the street. Back in the 80's traffic cops used to roll around in Ford sierra cosworths and similar cars. Nowadays they roll around in Vauxhal VRX's, BMW 5 series and Skoda Octavia's, which are all pretty high powered street cars. Then when they need to get something a little bigger involved they will bring out stuff like a BMW X5

In the uk only armed units have weapons normal marked units don’t so the marked units turn them self into the weapon to stop them, our police can’t pit manoeuvre as it’s dangerous so they have to try box them in without seriously injuring anyone. But British police don’t mess around

Interesting fact - BMW no longer approve their vehicles (except motorcycles) for Police use in the UK, after an incident when an officer lost his life following a mechanical failure. Essentially, they (BMW) said that the unique way Police vehicles are used could have contributed to premature component wear. Most forces are now using high-spec Volvos, Volkswagens and Audis in roles where the BMWs were previously favoured.
