Iceland did win the Cod wars, mainly because it wasn't an all out war, neither nation was going guns blazing, but it was still pretty hectic, ships ramming each other and such, Iceland eventually won, due to political reasons, being a vital part of NATO, but mainly because, Iceland was in the right and had all rights to protect it's fishing zones. The british didn't really have any legal right to dispute to Iceland's decision to expand it's fishing zone

I was a child at the time, but as I remember it Iceland extended its Exclusive Economic Zone to 200 miles before it was supposed to and so was in the wrong; but the US put pressure on Britain to back down as an internal NATO conflict would mean the real winner would be the Warsaw Pact (USSR).

Iceland played the US to pressure the UK, by airing the possibility of closing the US air base in Iceland and warming relations with the Soviets.

The US occupation in WW2 had a big influence on the island.Icelandic is a hard language to learn. EB if you doubt that the Icelanders are a hardy people see the full article on Wikipedia. We are Celts, anyone calling us Scandinavians will get their head "served up their bums" We are a Gealic nation, been fought over for centuries, we were forced to learn the Scandic language, but our language surpass "Scandinavia" We have more connections with Norway, Ireland and Scotland.......

they do make us Danes look like the villains. To a degree we were, However we've never been the best country by far and we have always been a little behind the times, but we had reasons for not really wanting to let go of anything. Usually when we do let go of things, we learn about the profits we lost. for example when we lost Skåne to Sweden that lost us many thousands of (whatever currency you want to use here) yearly. so we are extremely eager to keep what we have, and lose as little as possible.

well to be fair monopolizing all trade in and out of Iceland, then using that monopoly to charge so much for moldy and maggoty grain that the entire nation was on the brink of starvation is pretty villainous, any way you look at it. Don't get me wrong, we are the best of friends to day and we do not inherent the sins of our fathers but this is a big part of our history because mass starvation leaves generational scars, we all learn about this in school but I understand why it's not apart of Danish school curriculum

Probably not. Going by the sagas, the actual reason why they didn't stay in Canada was that they got into conflict with local native Americans, Which went far enough that the settlers ended up packing up and leaving, as though the land was good, they didn't think they could ever live in it without conflict.

I’ve read a bit into Iceland and tourism there. The rotting shark is a bit of a joke among Icelanders tbh, that they make tourists eat for a laugh, I think maybe they ate it hundreds of years ago, but it’s been blown up into big proportions since tourists started flocking there. The food there is for the most part quite good…the fresh fish! Had the best tuna sandwich of my life there! 😂 A truly beautiful country though, visited back in October 2013 on a school trip that was more of a holiday tbh. Even celebrated my birthday whilst I was there!

No Dude, it's comen tradition during Þorrablót a celebration of Icelandic tradition. My Father has it in the freezer and it gets eaten everytime Brennivín is served, no matter time of year.

nah not really, I'm an icelander and it's not uncommon for people (especially of older generations but not exclusively) to eat fermented shark. Not even just on special occasions.

You noticed the Viking chant during the FIFA World Cup. It started when Iceland played in the UEFA Nations Cup. The Icelandic fans did that when they played England. Iceland beat England 2-1. The team was coached by a part time dentist.

Lucky to have been to Iceland. It is an amazing country, and I would love to go back. It was dominated by the US Navy base, in my time, and the accepted currency in Reykjavík was the USD. The only thing going against it was that, as practically everything is imported, ergo, everything was expensive.

Hello Alan. Those throat clearing sounds must be down to the rotting whale shark? The climate back when th was going on was better apparently, hence settling Greenland. Since Yorkshire fishing boats still show their Scandinavian roots, and the ancestry is pretty much the same as Iceland, so the cod war was a bit like a dispute over a family will. I keep wondering if the North Atlantic fishing grounds were never forgotten before Columbus. Why tell everyone about a lucrative asset? Soon after 1492 the English got their own Italian called Cabot to go out and discover Newfoundland, where remains of these previous seafarers' settlement were later found. I was expecting Ethan from Midwest Americans to do a review on this, but they have been quiet recently.

it's incredible how much has changed in Iceland in the past twenty years, we went from almost no tourists to many times the population every year. I'm in my late 30s now but we I used to travel to the U.S. every year from the age of 7 to 13 and got routinely accused of being a liar when I told kids I came from Iceland... even got a few "there is no such place"😂 and now everybody wants to hang out and hear about our history and culture and we all love it, if someone tries to tell you otherwise, they are just playing it cool or they are very young, before the internet explaining that "no, I didn't grow up in an igloo" got a little old. hope you make it over some day :)

Thanks Beard! They have also this thing called "Sisu". You are going to have a blast over there! It is so beautiful and it makes a Finnish man almost jealous of the silence😁😁And the diversity of the terrains and places. Most of the people are living in the Capital City Reykjavik. It is a very vibrant city with funny, polite and "drunk" people just like we here in Finland😁😁. But seriously, great place to visit and both have fun and totally relax in those "hot springs and baths". I could "warn" you, that most likely they will try to make you do something "bat shit crazy" and you will do it, cause almost everything is. But I do not wanna worry you, so I do not do it. Just relax and enjoy!!! Learn the "Viking" clapping and listen some great music from "local" bands, like "Kaleo" and others. And most of the "Last names" for Women and Men are ending -dottir or -sson, "Daughter of ..... and Son of..... Like Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, a great international movie star! Have you watched Islandic crime series, like "Trapped" and other "Nordic"( "Noir")7Scandinavian series and movies. Best regards from Finland!!!
