My mom read the book in Poland, when she was learning English. I think it was what inspired her to find a penpal in Canada, which led to her writing to my dad, which led to her coming to Canada to marry him, and hence me and my siblings exist. We owe it all to good old Anne. My brother’s middle name is Gilbert in honour of the books. I got the whole series when I was 10 or so myself, covering Anne’s arrival as a sensitive, dramatic, emotional 11 year old, to the book featuring Anne & Gilbert’s youngest daughter, Rilla (named after Marilla). I practically wore those books out, reading and re-reading them. Probably one of the biggest influences of my childhood. I don’t think you’d regret reading the series now. I can’t imagine that even a grown man wouldn’t be captivated by Anne’s charm and spirit, and let yourself fall in love with turn-of-the-century Prince Edward Island. I’m in my 50s now, and I think one of the reasons I’ve had such a rich and interesting life so far was because I absorbed Anne’s philosophy early on, of never repeating the same mistake. There are so many new and interesting mistakes to make, why bother with one you’ve done before? Part of Anne’s spirit lives within me, and always will.

There have been a few interpretations on screen of Anne of Green Gables but I will sit firmly on the hill that Megan Follows is the very best one (1985 I believe). @joykoski7111Күн бұрын
I agree that the 1985 version is the very best. I came across a 1938 (or thereabouts) version not too long ago. Its the story and the characters that make it good, so as long as you find decent actors its going to be good. The "floating down the river" scene in the 1938 version was pretty funny...lol. No special effects and I think you could see the ropes holding the boat so they could film it. Of course you had all that dramatic music to let you know it was dangerous 😀I did watch the newer series as well but found it a little too "preachy"? The actors were good but the storylines all had to have a moral theme to them. It was a little too far off the original books for me to love it.

Anne of Green Gables was just the first book in the series. It is followed by Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, Rilla of Ingleside, and The Blythes are Quoted Anne of Green Gables. There is also a very popular stage musical of Anne of Green Gables and a sequel, Anne and Gilbert. (In high school, my son played Matthew in the musical and he was so amazing, a woman who saw him after the show complimented him, saying she had to keep reminding herself that he was just 17 instead of the much older Matthew.) For the TV series based on Anne of Green Gables (called "Road To Avonlea"), the production built a small town with all the main homes. The buildings were all functional and real. By building the real buildings and sets (in a more remote area outside the city), it added to the sense of realism, and also meant everything from the shots would remain in place [i.e. you wouldn't have to recreate the rooms and furnishings to match previous episodes since they were always left 'decorated' at the end of each production day. Scenes outside of the main townsfolk venues were usually done on a production set, or (frequently) using real locations (usually Toronto and the outskirt cities) which were set dressed to fit the period feel of the show.

I cried just watching that! Your reactions were perfect, the humour and warm heartedness are why we love Anne... with an "e". A lot happens outside those scenes. She also had an imaginary friend named Katie, who lived in window reflections. That was her only comfort before she came to live at Green Gables.

Almost every girl that I knew growing up in the American Midwest in the mid 20th century, read “Anne of Green Gables” and loved it. This was a time when children read books for pleasure. And it was a book that could be read over and over well into adulthood. Anne herself as an intelligent and lonely child has read many romanticized Victorian books, which influence her interior life and playtime with Diana. “Bosom friend” is simply an old fashioned phrase for a close best friend and confidante. “Bosom” meaning someone you could share your heart or “bosom” with.

“Anne with an E” was a great adaptation, and I say this as a man pushing 40. It truly takes you to a time and place in Canadian history, and it does a great job painting the world at the time, not just with the prejudice against Irish(specifically gingers), but it also features an Acadian boy(family) that truly reflect my own Acadian family, how black people lived and were treated, and the most heart wrenching of all; a little Mi’kmaq girl who befriends Anne only to be sent away to a residential school and forcefully kept away from her parents. She’s the only character to not have a happy ending, and u found that very fitting. While the show can be a bit campy/cheesy at times, it’s ultimately very wholesome and leaves you feeling happy after watching it. Anne’s delusional unyielding positivity is contagious, and will rub off on the audience and leave them seeing the good in everything. You should check out the trailer, the cinematography is great and truly captures the beauty of eastern Canada.

I read Anne of Green Gables as a 9-year-old-child, and since then have reread it many times throughout my life. I also convinced my younger sister, and later my daughter, to read it. (They both loved it). The whole series of 8 books is quite captivating and well-written, especially the nature descriptions. I too, like other commentators here, think the 1985 Sullivan productions series starring Megan Follows as Anne is the definitive movie version. The first movie, in particular, has the best casting, the best characterizations, the best depictions of the memorable scenes, wonderful storytelling etc. You really should watch it; it's very entertaining. The plot summary left a lot out, unfortunately, including the fact that Anne only delays her education somewhat, and then has to earn money. She attends a Teacher Training College (which is also shown in the 1985 series), and then gets a contract to teach at a remote country school, far from Green Gables. On her behalf, Gilbert heroically refuses his awarded school contract, which happened to be for the Avonlea School they'd both attended, recommending her for the position instead, and takes over Anne's contract for the remote school. Anne of Avonlea is about Anne's two years teaching in Avonlea school, with teaching problems almost as funny as all Anne's mishaps in the first book. In the third book, Anne of the Island, Anne attends and finishes University, with a BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree (unusual for women at the time) and, at the end, gets engaged to Gilbert. In the fourth book, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne teaches at a Ladies' College (really a high school by today's standards) for 3 years while Gilbert finishes medical school. In the fifth book, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne and Gilbert are married, with Gilbert starting his new practice, and they are mostly happy except for the loss of their first baby, a girl. The book ends with the birth of a healthy baby boy, though, and the next two books are about Anne's children, and their friends, some neighbours who live next door. The final book of the series, Rilla of Ingleside, is a personal favourite. It is all about Anne's youngest daughter who is, along with her mother and father, holding down the fort at home during WWI. It's a great depiction of the home front during the first world war, as Anne's three sons all go to fight in the war, and her two oldest daughters go off to be nurses. Rilla (a teenager at the start) stays home, taking care of an orphaned baby (the father, a soldier does end up surviving to reclaim his baby), while supporting her mother when her most beloved brother is killed in the trenches. So we see the war from the perspective of those at home, in a very well-told story. All in all it is such an incredible series and interwoven with Canadian history in an interesting way.

Definitely a Canadian classic! I grew up with this as did my five children who all love Anne of Green Gables. We wore out the dvds of the movies from the 80s. Definitely worth reading and watching!

LMM had a New World role model: American Louisa May Alcott earned a living as a novelist. "Little Women" was published way back in 1868 (vs. 1908).

Great books. The Meagan Follows movie version is brilliant and should be viewed by everyone, especially those with a daughter. Dads will see an ideal man and father figure in Matthew. Stories of love, loyalty, selflessness, and personal sacrifice are as needed today as ever.

Traveling salesman would go from town to town to sell products, etc. people as most of them did not travel outside their small town. Thus it was a traveling salesman who sold Anne the hair dye.

It was not required reading but it was often included on suggested books lists. The made-for-TV-movies were what I fell in love with first, as a pre-teen, and they still have a huge place in my heart as an adult! Megan Follows is fantastic, as is most of the cast, the scenery, the music...

You got the Coles notes version of the novel. For one: the green fables house was there when Montgomery wrote the book. Her house was down the hill a way from it. Secondly the interior of the house has been made to look like the book description, it is an historical place to visit. There are about 8 books in the series. It all takes place in Cavendish, PEI. I’ve been and done the complete Lucy Maude Montgomery tour, seen her grave, the post office where she sent out her manuscript. Her house was just the foundation. It’s a lovely town. The musical Anne of Green Gables is great as well.

Anne is a cultural part of Eastern Canada, in particular Prince Edward Island. Much of Anne's story depicts Maritime life even to some extent today. Anne is much loved. And yes, Islanders are some of the nicest people in the world! It wasnt required reading when i was in school in the 70's, back then, we didnt need a "required reading list", we read because we didnt have much TV or video games haha. Carrot was because her hair was orange, and the slate was her little chalk board. Im 61 yrs old, i was a kid when i first read this story and when Matthew died I cried like a baby. Im crying watching this.

I loved Anne of Green Gables as a kid. ❤ The nostalgia! You can visit the Anne of Green Gables that inspired the book on Prince Edward Island. There are always a lot of Japanese tourists because apparently it's popular in Japan, which was surprising to me!

I'm American. There are many American girls who love Anne, especially those of us who already enjoy period films. A lot of girls fell in love with the character of Gilbert Blythe from just reading the books. I started watching this version on PBS. Then I read all the books. Yes books and movies are different. But I believe the first and second movies of the Meagan Fallows version captures the spirit best. And yes, Anne is a funny girl! Thanks for looking into it. I was laughing along with you. BTW. I'm a colorblind female, so I know the pain.

I was born and raised on Prince Edward Island. We are extremely proud of Lucy Maud Montgomery and her work, Anne of Green Gables. The story is not only popular in Canada, but around the world. It has been translated into 36 languages, making it the most translated Canadian book. In the peak tourist season, Green Gables, the home and the grounds that was used in the book, receives over 4,000 visitors a day. The story is fictional, but it describes the way of life on PEI at that time pretty accurately. By the way, a slate is a little chalk board that each student would to carry with them to class. This is what they would write on.

These miniseries were my childhood (Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Green Gables the Sequel). They aired every winter around Christmas and it was the one time of year I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime to watch them. Later we had them on VHS tapes and I watched them almost weekly, along with the TV spin off series called Road to Avonlea. Anne Shirley had a lot of influence in my life growing up. I actually didn't read the books until much later in life. Still watch both miniseries at least once a year.

Yayy!! I liked your video even before I saw your reaction! I used to watch that t.v. show over and over with my grandma when I was a young teen. As a Quebecoise, I had to watch the translated version, unfortunately... but it was still a great story and I identify to Anne (with an E) so much as I grew up. Thank you for reacting to this canadian classic. **Just finished watching, seeing the three scenes and hearing the music made me cry my eyes out. And now i want to watch it again!**

It’s an older movie and I don’t really remember the story all that much. But thinking about it now, I wanna watch the entire movie because it seems like an emotional, heartwarming story 😀 I found myself getting teary at just the scenes displayed here lol let alone the whole movie! ☺️There’s just something about older films.. such a contrast to this day and age haha.

A "slate" was a small black board that each student did their work on, but it was made from a thin slice of slate rock and was very breakable. For Gilbert Blythe, seeing Anne was love at first sight.

Anne of Green Gables and it"s sequel from the 80s are simply magical and perfect - the cast are amazing - no one can BE Anne, Gilbert, Marilla and Matthew except for those actors, the rest of the cast were excellent too. Have all the books, read them several times. Classics that are beloved in Sweden too. Astrid Lindgren read them as a child and was partly inspired by Anne when she wrote about Pippi Långstrump.(Longstocking). I think Swedish was one of the first languages the book got translated in to. Can't imagine a world without Anne. She is a bosom friend and a kindred spirit. ❤ Marilla and Matthew are not mean, Mariĺla was stern, Matthew just sweet and kind. They are not her parents (mum and dad) they are simply Marilla and Matthew. The best! 💖 And there is for sure a lot of comedy in the stories about Anne! Tears and laughter... Who is Gilbert?! Oh, just the guy that no guy can ever live up to... The boy next door and prince charming rolled in to one. The 'shadow' that Anne can never get away from. Mr Right. Jonathan Crombie! 💔

Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful old fashioned story about growing up in rural Canada. The cast of actors are fantastic from Meagan Follows to Colleen Dewhurst. Miss Hamilton to Mr. Farnsworth.
@jetstream63892 күн бұрын
You should watch the CBC series and a lot of the old fashioned things like slates and expressions like "bosum friends" will make more sense. Anne did accept her scholarship and went to Normal School in Charlottetown for teacher-training. She came back to Avonlea to become a teacher for a year. She later becomes a schoolmaster at a girls school in Halifax -- Gilbert becomes seriously ill and the reunion scene on the bridge is when Gilbert is recovering. Gilbert becomes a doctor and they get married. CBC came up with a sequel(I don't know if that was from the books or not) when Gilbert becomes a medic at the front in the First World War. Anne volunteers as a nurse and goes to France to search for her husband.

The WWI episodes did not follow the books at all for it was Anne's two sons who went to war on the First WW. You find this story in 'Rilla of Ingleside ' named after Anne's daughter. She of course gets her name from Marilla.

@@blanchemoyaert3714 As I suspected. I'll confess that I didn't read all the books and suspected the CBC episode in question was created by their writers.

Tyler, Anne was a teacher at an all girls school, as mentioned in the last scene you watched. FYI, the girl who played Anne (Megan Follows) was in (if I remember) the last Heritage Minute (as a grown woman) you reacted to about Mary Ritter Hamilton, the woman who literally painted the "war scenes" that were left after the Canadians fought a battle. Always enjoy your reactions and interest in all things Canuck. Cheers from 🇨🇦.

The clips you watched are spaced out years apart. This version which was a mini-series first in 1985, then in 1987 and a final one in 2004 was the very best of all that were made, in my opinion. I can never, ever get tired of watching it, and Kevin Sullivan who produced it keeps an iron-tight grip on it's copyrights. It cannot be found anywhere on KZbin in it's complete form, so I had to purchase it as a VHS boxed set, which I still have and watch at least once a year. It is a truly beautiful and heartwarming and funny tale. He also produced two other spin-off series. One called Road to Avonlea, which was a weekly series, and Wind at my Back, which was a weekly series, all of which were wonderful, particularly since my family going back generations were from PEI, and Nova Scotia. I was born in Ontario, and I lived and cottaged in Muskoka where Lucy Maud Montgomery had a summer home in Bala, Ontario which is now a museum on the shores of the Moon River, a truly beautiful spot where she holidayed and wrote. I was privileged to get to know one of the main actors in Wind at my Back. I never tire of it. Not ever.

Anne of Green Gables is not just one book. It's a book series following Anne's growing up, her experiences just out of school as a teacher, her relationship with Gilbert, and then their marriage and family life. What you were watching is one of the best interpretations of the first few books. It was a miniseries on PBS some years ago. The story is set around the turn of/beginning of the 20th Century. Children had small blackboards or slates they would write on like a notebook. So, Anne broke her slate on Gilbert's head when they first met as kids in school and he called her carrots.

Some info on the author, Lucy Maude Montgomery. She was a school teacher married to a minister and lived in the town of Leaskdale Ontario which is 20 miles North of Uxbridge and 30 miles West of Lindsay where I live. During the summer when not involved with school she went to Avonlea PEI to stay with ,I believe her aunt, who owned a farm house with green gables. That is the house you tour if you do the Anne trip to PEI. Many of the books were written there. You'll have go a long way in Canada to find people who are not Lucy Maude fans. The updated series "Anne with an E" was equally brilliant and starred a young Irish/Canadian girl Amy Beth McNulty. Most of the cast were Canadian with some Brits(Mellissa) and Americans (Gilbert Blythe).

These books are truly worth reading (or listening to if you prefer audio version). Meghan Fallows and the rest of the cast did an amazing job staying true to the spirit of the novels. LucycMaud Montgomery also wrote another series set later in Avonlea which was also made into a TV series called Road to Avonlee. It's also worth checking out too. There was also another movie made after this main one covering the wartime period and is another great glimpse of how life and the war affected Canadians at this time in history.
