Mecano was once of the greatest Spanish pop groups. Descanso Dominical and Aidalai are the best Mecano albums. The composers (the Cano brothers) have more experience and liberty. In the videoclip of La fuerza del Destino was the first time Penelope Cruz appeared on screen. She was later on the girlfriend of one of the musicians. Rammstein took Mujer contra mujer as inspiration for their Mann gegen Mann. Hijo de la Luna has versions in many languages. Jose Maria Cano has written an opera later on and then he left music for painting.

The lyrics of the song are quite poetic, the chosen words and the story reminds of the poetry of Federico García Lorca.
@IgorSalazar15 күн бұрын

The rhythm is like a waltz but something very popular from the family of andaluz flamenco. I'm not an expert but this is very familiar to me as a mexican because here we grow admiring the spanish "guitarra flamenca". Cano, the composer of this song said that the format was some sort of opera, that's why it sounds so cinematographic. The legend in the lyrics explains why the moon can be waning crescent to make a cradle when the baby cries.

Mecano was a "pop" band from Spain, whose members were Ana Torroja (voice) and the brothers José María and Ignacio (Nacho) Cano who, apart from playing several instruments, wrote the songs (music and lyrics). This is probably one of the most beautiful and acclaimed songs in the history of Spanish "pop" and, at the time it became such a great hit in Spain that soon, Montserrat Caballe recorded it for her CD "Eternal Caballe" in 1987/88; after her, many others (Sarah Brightman, etc). However, in my opinion, none of the covers are more perfect than the original version by the group. By the way, Caballé suggested José María Cano that he should write an entire opera to complete the story... and Cano accepted. He quitted the band for almost two years to write the opera, and when he finished it and it was premiered onstage, the critics destroyed it with no mercy. So they did with the recording they had (previously) made of this opera, with a cast that included reknown opera singers like Renée Fleming (if I don't remember wrongly), which was a total flop at the charts. I've never heard the entire opera (as a matter of fact, it's impossible to find anywhere) but to this day I'm still very intrigued about what it was like...

A mí me pareció espectacular.

If you listen to more of them you will see that there are clearly two types of songs on their discs: - The most melodic, classical and "conventional" ones (for example in their instrumental arrangements) composed by Jose María (like this "Hijo de la Luna"). - The most electronic and "experimental" ones composed by Nacho, the youngest brother.

At 3:30 you mention the meter with the 3rd beat being emphasized instead of the 1st which is "more common"... except in flamenco rhythms, where having the emphasis on the last beat is the norm. And the song being Spanish and about gypsies no less, having flamenco influences is unsurprising. It's common for flamenco music to be divided in 12 beats arranged in groups of 2 and 3 beats where each group then is stressed on the last beat. So you get typical rhythms of: one two THREE, one two THREE, one TWO, one TWO, one TWO, etc (disclaimer, I know nothing about music, but I always found this bit of information fascinating, so I thought to share it)

Absolutely love this song ❤ There are several covers. But I never knew the original either. 😅 But this is just beautiful. So glad you analysed this. ❤ The song structure is wonderfully interesting. 🤩 I like the weirdness as well. Thank you for explaining it. 🥰

It is not well known that Hans Zimmer was Mecano's second keyboard player on their 1984 tour....although this song was from 1986.

what a wonderful review!!!!!!!! i'm an obsessed MECANO Fan since the 80ties and it hurt so much, that they have never been reunited again.., Ana Torroja (the Singer) makes Solo-Music, nowadays her voice is a litte bit more mature but still very clear and wonderful. I don't give up the hope, that their will reunited again...if ABBA can do that after nearby 40 years MECANO can do it too.. (the Hope will die at last)

This is such a beautiful, haunting song! In a weird way, I guess, I find that because of all the key changes, it sort of finds a way around my defenses and gets a hold of me. Does that even make sense? ❤ Forestlla covered this song in a compelling, dramatic way, definitely worth listening to! ❤

Oh My god I remember in nightclubs in mid -late 1980s that would be the final closing slow dance every time ... and key changes you do not like, I love it, literarily makes my hair stand in overwhelming emotion, cause it hits me like the wave of my feet

Diana Navarro. " El Perdón " para empezar a conocerla . Gracias ❤

Hi! The group is spanish, so the endings of the sections of the song with castanets and the notes the melody has in these parts, reflects the traditional music from Spain, like flamenco

Glad to see you react to this song. I always loved it. The melody was so different from what was heard on the radio and TV at the time.

I liked your reaction/analysis of this amazing song! How the world works, really... I got to know Mecano and this song specifically because my favorite group did a cover of it and I really liked the original! I hope the request you received is the Forestella cover (as amazing as the original). If not, here's my suggestion.

this song resonates so much with me. I was a spanish child in the 80s. my father from gypsy(roma) family and my mother from standar spanish (but with many fair and blue eyed members) in my childhood there were few foraigners in Spain, so bein dark skinned(in winter most spaniards are quite average skin. I was really brown all year long) made you an outcast. I was bullied because of it. but at the same time I was not part of the gypsy comunity. And they were in deed very conservatives with their women(Still are). so the song lyrics are very powerful. But I think cruz de navajas is even stronger.

I have this song in a Spotify playlist that I stumbled upon being paired with Dimash songs and I have listened enraptured by the fascinating rhythms and countermelodies, along with her bewitching voice… but I had never seen them nor did I know the background and story. (I also realized that I had both this version and the cover done by Forestella - different feeling.). Intriguing and the lead singer is stunning! Wow! (Such an 80s style of video too!). As always, enjoyed your analysis and insight into the melody. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦.

The greatest analysis of the song I've ever seen. I was a child when this song came out. I understand what you mean when you say that this is not a pop song. Indeed, I've always thought that the gender for this song is "copla" a famous gender music in Spain. Most of times "copla" is confused with "flamenco" 'cause both of them are based on Phrygian scale. Examples of "copla" gender is "ojos verdes".

Ah I think I see, "género" in Spanish for "musical style" is called a "genre" in English, although it does correctly translate to "gender" in other instances like grammatical gender

We are too used to the globalized western musical back ground but in different parts of the world even western styles and genres are all the time being interpreted and defied by different traditions and sensibilities. I am a devoted fan of Mecano since childhood back in the 80s for their way to transform pop into something closer to classics. I encourage you to continue exploring stuff generally unknown by mainstream popular music. Two recommendations for you to defy your knowledge and sensibility: "Los Dinosaurios" from argentinian genious Charly García. And "Chuncho" from peruvian singer Ima Sumac (considered one of the most versatile and almost superhuman voice in history). Loved your analysis, very sensitive and precise.!!! You got a new fan!
