Geoffrey Palmer has been around for ever. His list of credits is enormous. While he has had leading roles in some great shows, he was also known for his character acting. In the US everybody wants to be a star, in the UK there are a number of character actors who are very well known - he was one of them. Rather than being “cheap hires” or second rate actors, these people become prolific because of their remarkable talent and ability, consummate work ethic and likability. When working with tight TV budgets, you need someone who can come in and perform perfectly and get on with everybody. They are the opposite of divas. In recent years I have seen a couple of UK miniseries where virtually every part was played by a well known character actor. In the absence of “stars” watching a show where everyone is of the standard their profession requires is actually quite exhilarating. Their acting is next level, since they are not bound to the character. They aren’t affected by trying to be likeable or cool enough to ensure another series. I’ve seen Palmer play roles where he was totally loveable and others where you could only despise him. I have no doubt that the other four in this sketch would have been thrilled to be working with him.

Geoffrey Palmer the older guy is renowned for his comedy in the UK too, he starred in one of my favourite sitcoms of all time called 'Butterflies' which also starred a young Nicholas Lyndhurst, and he also starred in the long running sitcom 'As Time Goes By' alongside Dame Judi Dench, you'll have seen him in Fawlty Towers too and he makes an appearance as Field Marshal Douglas Haig in 'Blackadder Goes Forth' which you just started reacting to, he's an absolute legend in the UK, love the guy!

It was funny to me to think of you immediately recognizing Geoffrey Palmer for mostly his serious acting roles (which is fair and entirely reasonable) but to me I think of him mostly for 2 extremely successful TV comedy shows in my childhood. The first was 'Butterflies', a 70's TV sitcom where he played the rather dull/boring Dentist husband of the main character, Ria, a housewife going through something of a midlife crisis. The second was "The Fall And Rise of Reginald Perrin" which ran from 1976 until 1983 and starred the British comedy legend Leonard Rossiter. Palmer played the Brother in Law of the main character, so again a sort of 'supporting role' and often the 'straight man' for the gags. Both of these shows were hugely popular, but especially 'Reggie Perrin' which is almost as iconic as 'Fawlty Towers' (another comedy show that Palmer appeared in). He's a great actor, and has worked with absolute legends of stage and screen. I would VERY much suggest you check out "The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin" as while much of the humour is satirizing the British culture and way of life, a TON of it is in particular satirizing influences that came from American corporate culture. I'm sure that you've absorbed enough cultural references from other British comedy to absolutely love it.

Yesterday I was watching KZbin about Rathlin Island, a small Island just off the tip of Northern Island itself, and apparently rats and ferrets were accidentally introduced to the Island with the result that the Puffin bird numbers are falling dramatically. They are all funny but The Offensive Translator is *really* funny. What's great is, if you read the comments, people of all nationalities get the joke and aren't offended. It's obviously from the early 2000s - you know when we had a sense of humour 😒 I can't be the 1st person to recommend this sketch, I understand if you think it's too "problematic" to do, I just think it's a shame we can't laugh anymore without people getting offended on OTHER people's behalf, when they actually *get* that it's a joke. See the fundamental joke here is that in WW2 young men aged 20-25 were flying these machines, performing incredible acts of bravery and endurance, and generally being pretty incredible. This is contrasted with the modern youth who can barely string a sentence together, are concerned with disrespect and mental health and victim culture, most of the kids in the London area talk like this now and have for time blud.

My father was one of those brave young men, he was 21 at the time and was a baker, God knows how he survived but he did. I'm sure the youth of today would also rise to the occasion if needed. Chances are they'd be better at it, after all many have played war games on their Xboxes etc.. There is a fighting spirit in us Brits, we come together when needed. @@pigknickers2975 Your grandfather sounds like my kinda guy, I done a very short stint as a cadet in the mess hall at RAF Manston, most cadets chose to work with the vehicles, not me lol, coming from a family where there was never any food in the house working in the mess hall cooking for two weeks was like heaven. Sadly I didn't end up joining the RAF, one of my lifes regrets but always felt a strong connection to them, I lived not far from Biggin Hill, so got to see the spitfires every day and use the facilities there..Done another very short stint at RAF Northolt , scaring birds off the runways lol..Massive respect to your grandfather, may he rest in peace. If it wasn't for brave men like him, my father and countless others, we wouldn't have the lives we have now..They will never be forgotten. .
