One thing that was not mentioned about the coffee in Australia is that all of those shops are independently owned, and all of the coffee is different. They use different suppliers, different beans, and so there is a lot of variation. Starbucks failed in Australia because it's just not very good, it's expensive and who wouldn't rather buy from a local business rather than a multi-national chain.

The tap water here in Australia has to go through what is considered on of the toughest drinking water regulatory systems, with over 250 guidelines to ensure it is safe to drink. Mind you, the taste of the tap water does change from place to place but that is from all different kinds of factors. It doesn't matter that much anyway for me, I am just happy that our water is clean and safe.

Fluoridated and chemed to the Maxx , I don't shower in it let alone drink it 😂, I have rain water and good filtration even then I don't fully trust what comes down in the rains. You think your tap water is good.....but from someone who washes in Rain water I can tell you the smell and feel of the town water is shocking you just can't tell as you are used to it so don't know any different, for me I feel it on the skin I smell it in the shower or bath when I am not on my property

Adelaide water was notoriously bad - not unsafe but cloudy and sometimes had a weird smell. Ships wouldn’t take on water in Adelaide if they could help it. But now it’s good. Why pay a fortune for bottled water and create more waste plastic.

It goes through ancient underground pipes leaching heavy metal into it, spring water bottles at source filtered through rock and so on ... With actual minerals in it.... Also the way it flows and bends at right angles all the time...corrupts the molecular structure of the water.... And so much more.... Considering we are made of water..... It is essential to have the best , then again I don't shop at wollies or Coles ..only organic.. call me a snob and I am... But I have a background in natural medicine for 25 years and the research of what I have seen .. people wonder why there is such a cancer epidemic... Lot of it has to do with the pH of the body and certain levels of pH allow cancer to thrive and more , enough of my rant....but no there is no safe or good town water in Australia that's for sure

Don't drink rainwater since the flying fox bats became a problem as well as birds defecating everywhere. There's a few areas that have had PFAS contamination so they drink bottled water usually. Not all tap water is the same. Some councils heavily dose water with fluoride and some just taste plain bad.

I'm Swedish and when I grew up I was surprised to learn that in some countries it's not safe to drink tap water or that it doesn't taste good or even that it's not cold enough. Here it's safe, tastes good (some regions better than others) and it's usually fairly cold.

@@t.a.7970 I lived in Queensland from Gold Coast to Cairns learnt early on not to drink the tap water due to the heaviest concentration of chlorine used to kill all the bad bugs. most Queenslanders use rain water for drinking (hated that too). South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales tap water ok to drink in most places, Northern territory (Alice Springs) I worked on the towns water and sewerage systems and water was crystal clear out of the ground and drinkable, but due to purification regulations it had chlorine and fluride added which didnt change the taste that much. Water in Alice Springs originates from New Guinea and travels underground. Some of our pumps went down about 180 meters. Water in Alice though was classed as heavy water compared to others states.

Here in Belgium they just play the original songs at any time, without disclaimers. I never understood why Americans make such a big deal over a few curse words. A few years ago we stopped with the 1 and 2 cent coins too in Belgium and I know some other European countries did this also. If you pay electronically there's no change but if you pay cash they will round off to 0 or 5 cents.

I agree with you Lorre, I am so glad Australia doesn't have the "Puritan mentality" that the USA has, we live and let live, some swear, some don't, people have their preferences and it doesn't worry us, it's their life, there is a lot of respect for others in Australia, of course, there are ratbags but we avoid them or ignore them, the philosophy is that everyone has a rotten day now and then, it's a pity that so many people in the US pay attention to so many insignificant issues and on the other hand they have really serious issues to concentrate on and change, they are the most medicated country in the world, they have an enormous deficit in education, health, their blind passion for guns, their children can be shot down any minute in their schools, etc etc, but they worry about "a bad word" in a song. I know, it's not all the USA, it's the intolerant ones that spoil their image, there are so many beautiful people there, like in any country.

As a 78yr old Australian, living in Geelong (80km south-west of Melbourne), I grew up and experienced Australia's transition from Imperial Weights & Measures, money, temperature etc. to Metric starting from about the mid-60's through to late 80's, it did take a while to adapt but now it's natural to think Metric, best thing we ever did. My father however, couldn't get his head around Temperatures in Celsius and clung to the Fahrenheit system for weather. I tried to make it easy for him to think in terms of ... Freezing is below zero, cold is 0 - 10, cool is 10 - 20, warm is 20 - 30, hot is 30 - 40, effing hot is 40+ ... Cheers!

I went through school at exactly the right time for metric, leaving year 12 in 1972. The changeover was planned well in advance, so all through high school we learned both systems. So glad we went metric. The imperial system is so niche that a plumber would not know what a surveyor is talking about half the time. Yards, feet and inches are fine, but chains, links, rods and perches? And apparently a perch can be an area or a length depending on context.

You'd be pretty unlikely to hear the un-censored versions of songs in places like Target, or on commercial radio, but in smaller shops, especially alternative clothing shops and stuff, they don't care what they play. Her experience with the radio sounds like JJJ, which is one of our less commercialised, state-funded stations, so they don't have to worry as much about upsetting sponsors. And the weather here is definitely at its most variable in the Spring or Autumn. It can be freezing in the morning and you need a jacket and a jumper, and then you're just shedding layers throughout the day until you're just in a t-shirt.

In relation to the cuss-words. You forget, we Australians make sailors blush. Here even in the places with the digital signs, there'll often also be a physical sign "Speed limit X unless signed otherwise". We tend to have REALLY good tap-water. It's free. If you have a bottle of water in the house it's usually a 1/2 full bottle that you throw in the freezer for personal use, so you pull the half-frozen bottle out, fill it from the tap, and it's cold fast, and longer. Once we removed the 1 and 2 cent pieces, you basically add it all up, and then round up/down at the end, once you get beyond a total dollar spent it all evens out in the wash.

After mowing the lawn on a hot day and rinsing the sweat off to cool myself down, it is hard to resist a few gulps of water from the hose. I also find it easier to drink if it is not refrigerated. I am lucky enough that my city decided that poisoning the water with fluoride was too expensive to install and maintain, especially since most of the water is not even consumed.

I drink bottled water on the job sometimes when travelling between jobs or the customer's house has no mains water tap to drink from, I try to avoid drinking tank (you never know the quality of a random person's tank or water within) and recycled water. I've done a lot of travel so know it is more normal in the world to not be able to drink tap water than it is to be able to drink it. On the other hand, having grown up in the UK and living in London for years, what I cannot get my head around though, is that here in the driest continent on Earth we still use fresh water to flush our toilets with and water gardens with. How stupid is that!!! Yes, some people yse tank water, but it is not mandated. Also, most people in Australia baulk at the idea of drinking recycled water, now THAT is bizarre ( every Londoner and every Singaporean drinks recycled water and it is perfectly fine, you would not know in fact)

The rising price of bronze (mainly the rising price of copper) made it an easy decision to remove 1 and 2 cent coins. Initially people weren't happy about retailers rounding up (3-4c -> 5c, 8-9c -> 10c) but very quickly we've gotten used to not stressing over 1 or 2 cents on the final bill.

Rounding applies to the total bill. 3 items at 9c would total 27c & be rounded down to 25c. Some transactions you lose, some you win, overall, you probably break even. There is no rounding when you pay by credit/debit card

Here in Austria (not Australia🙂) nothing broadcasted is censored in any way either and I'm pretty sure that applies to all of Europe. If swearwords are part of a song, you will hear it on the radio without any "beeps". I just can imagine how annoying it would be listening to a song, that is permanently interrupted due to censorship. Same with (not) blurring out saucy details on TV: If they are part of a movie, documentary or whatever, they'll stay in. So over here it's not unusual by any means to get to sea breasts or even private parts in the prime time programme. I grew up with it and have actually never thought about it until I heard about the rather rigorous rules regarding this topic in the USA. 🙂

A couple of things; Coffee shops on every corner used to be a pub on every corner of the CBD. My home town of Newcastle was like that. Proper pubs too with a front bar for the blokes a ladies lounge for women and a mixed saloon with accommodation upstairs. You could always get tea or coffee as well. Water is an issue down under but town or tap water is awesome, it comes filtered, treated and fluoride added, great for kids teeth.

Here in Perth we are heading towards having nearly 10 zones in our train network, to get from one side to another was expensive, they have now made it that in one trip you will only be charged 2 zones max no matter how far you go. Say Joondalup to Mandurah is 100km, with a smartrider card with autoload it's just 4 bucks.

I travelled to the Philippines last year (from Sydney) and you would be crazy to drink the tap water anywhere as a foreigner. I think the Manila locals can but that's about it. It's bottles for everything. While their bottled water is no different to ours, it's a pain in the arse to use bottles for everything and the country is trying to limit its plastic usage yet rely on bottled water. The day I landed back in Sydney, I had a much missed, massive gulp straight from the tap. It was glorious. I also remember my couple of tours of the UK visiting relatives and drinking straight from the tap. The water was good also.

The whole world save for US uses the metric system for ease of calculation. Eg. one cubic centimeter of water (at room temp at sea level) = one milli-liter and weighs one gram. So a cube with a side of ten centimeters contains 1000 cubic centimeters and that volume of water is 1 litre which weighs 1 kilogram. One cubic meter of water weighs one tonne. With distance and area one thousand meters is one kilometer, and an area of a square with a side of 100 meters = 10,000 square meters and is called one hectare. It's just so much easier.

The 1 & 2 cent coins were taken out of circulation when the face value was lower than the cost of minerals in metals to founder & stamp at the mint along with the convenience of not carry pockets full coins. Australian currency is also individually different for each denomination for the use of visually impaired to recognise with different raised bumps, ridges, shapes and size same as Braille for printed books.

I think its easier to round up or down rather than calculate 3-12% tax depending on the state. Sounds like a nightmare to a non maths person like me. 😂 Most times here you won't be rounding at all, the cashier rounds if needed and just tells you the amount.

Re: 1 and 2 cent coins in Australia (Pennies in the US), as I recall, 1 and 2 cent coins were discontinued in Australia as the the cost of manufacturing of these coins was greater than the face value of the coins. They are no longer in circulation or production, however (I believe) they are still legal currency, not that you see anyone use them. Collectors are still looking for them and probably have a small collection of them. Yes, there are lots of "weird" things here in Aus, but they are not weird to us, just to everyone else in the world. But that is one of the many things that make Australia great and I, for one, would not wish to live anywhere else (with the exception of New Zealand). Have a great day. Cheers.

My husband has a bunch of 1c and 2c coins that he bought so he can use them for currency tokens for some of our board games. More satisfying to use metal coins rather than the plastic coins you get with board games. His original idea was to spray paint the coins so they become different values by colour than by denomination. (ie, 1c coin would be copper, 2c coin would be silver and a 10c coin would be gold). But he hasn't gotten around to doing that yet

At the time of being told this I was used to F and did not know how to judge the 'feel' of the days temperature (should I wear a hoodie, shorts, etc). 38 was a cold number to me at the time, so the memory device helped me to better get a sense of C as a scale, if that makes sense. I am yet to meet ANY financial institution in this country - Australia - that rounds down like that! If something is 93 cents it automatically becomes 95 cents if you pay in cash. If you pay by card or eft it will usually charge the actual amount but not always - some businesses take a punt that you won’t notice, or care, about a couple of cents here and there! So that sorta buggers that theory for her doesn’t it! Interesting to note that this girl is living in Melbourne. Melbourne's water supply comes from catchment areas which are entirely (I mean entirely) cordoned off to the activities of man. My understanding is that it is one of only six cities in the world where this happens. The water is filtered through the mountains and forests which form those catchment areas. Get yourself caught trespassing in those areas and you'll find yourself before the courts and up for some quite severe penalties. I LOVE our water.

Australians are pretty laid back and when having a coffee we sit down and relax with friends and chat and we avoid the rush and stress of some countries. We have the luxury of great beaches and plenty to choose from along with the weather being fairly mild but can experience some hotter extreme days but mostly blessed with cool ocean breezes and most Aussies live close to the coast. We are mostly pretty chilled here which helps to avoid being too stressed or anxious and a very friendly lot happy and resilient.

Hey Ian, on the weather front, Perth (Western Australia) has a dry Southern California style climate with more consistent sunshine than cities like Melbourne. An easy way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit is, double the temperature and add 30. Say it’s 21c, double it = 42 then add 30 = 72 Fahrenheit. When I travel to the US, I will use this method all the time, just in reverse.

When Australia went metric, cars started come come with dual speed displays, both metric and imperial. You could even buy a converter to attach to the speedo input on the display to permanently display in kph. The most confusing thing was going from £SP to cents and dollars. Shop owners hated it because conversion always created friction between customer and vendor as to what the equivalent values were. Then weights ... the hassles never seemed to end, especially to old fossil like me who grew up imperial and went through the conversion. Still throws me to this day sometimes. Moving on aint easy!

The rounding up or down of money is only if you’re paying cash. Pay by card, you pay the exact amount. If it’s $19.98, that’s what you pay. You can take advantage of it and pay cash when it’s rounding down but pay by card when it would be rounding up and save a few extra cents.

When it comes to prices in Australia, you'll very rarely come across an individual price or combined total that ends in anything but a 0, 5 or occasionally 9. When paying with a credit or debit card obviously you're charged the specific amount. But paying cash gets it rounded to the nearest 5 or 0. Brisbane busses in the CBD loop route have been free for 20 years. Currently all non airport fares are 50c. The Airport terminal is privately owned so costs an additional $10.95. I think the tap water thing is true for a lot of Australia especially in cities that generally have soft water but there are other cities (Adelaide comes to mind) where the water is harder and probably doesn't taste very good. When Americans think of coffee, do they generally think of drip coffee or espresso and does it change depending on setting (eg at home vs a cafe)? In Australia coffee is basically synonymous with espresso-based hot drinks at cafes, and instant, espresso and moka brewed when having coffee at home. Drip coffee isn't really a thing here.

Adelaide water isn't soft like the eastern states but it's still fine to drink. From a health and safety perspective, there's no reason to not drink it straight from the tap. That's both the "official" advice and the in practice one - it does contain minerals, but nothing that's actually harmful apart from taste.

Coins: When the metal you use to make the coins is worth more than what's stamped on them, you have to rethink using those coins. It was just easier to discontinue using them, they weren't really useful anymore. In order to buy anything with them, you'd have to carry dozens of them. They're actually considering doing the same to the 5c piece, too. As for the rounding up or down problem, it's not really a problem. If you pay by card, you pay the exact amount, and the only thing you can regularly buy that doesn't go up in bigger increments is fuel, anyway. Like, there's nothing listed as $19.99 these days, it's $19.95.

i have rainwater tanks all my tapwater is rainwater, i have a spearpoint to give me bore water for the garden which is common in rural areas. town water is always safe to drink in Australia but it can have a chlorine taste which is super noticeable to me because i drink pure rainwater. but you can remove the chlorine taste by letting the water sit for a while so a lot of people do have filters or water jugs in the fridge.

@@veddyveddygood no filter, never had an issue with it except for once we went on holidays for a week came back and the water tasted foul. we had a green tree frog die in the tank and it got stuck in the outlet. had to drain the tank and clean it out. but nobody got sick or anything. my grandparents and parents have only drank rainwater their whole lives with no issues.

@@6226superhurricane I grew up in the Adelaide Hills - water off our zinc roof was the drinking water. Mum grew ivy on the outside of the brick rainwater tank. One Summer, the ivy had grown high enough that a snake came looking for water to drink, fell in and drowned. Stinky drinks. We had it scrubbed and bought a tank of water from the CFS (rural firefighting brigades) and bathed and washed clothes in pale brown dam water until it rained again in Autumn. Each Summer after that, one of my chores was to check the tank every few days and fish out the very occasional snake with a loop of wire on a pole. It was a 2 metre pole and the snakes all ran away without a backward look. Trigger Warning for Foil Hatters - because we didn't have fluoridated mains water, we had a fluoride pill with breakfast every morning.

New Zealand also uses currency notes of the same type as the Aussies. We also have one and two dollar coins and got rid of one cent coins years ago. Most shopping now is done with cards and a 99c will be recorded as such in the transaction, only cash purchases involve rounding up and down and we don't even notice it as being unusual. It certainly saves on pockets full of small change.

I think the NZ notes are printed here in Australia along wit those of several other countries that went the plastic coloured route. The printing works is located next to Sydney Rd near cragieburn. Note Printing Australia.

Yeah Australia prints polymer notes for 31 countries and licenses the patents/technology to a couple of others.

We are encouraged to drink water from the tap in Australia. If it is 99 cents it is really $1. Also we tend to pay with EFTPOS Electronic Fund Transfer at Point of Sale, tap and go, so if something is rounding up or down does not take place.

As someone who was a young boy when Australia introduced decimal currency on 14th Feb 1966 (I can still remember the jingle), I would like to point out that originally we did have 1 and 2 cent coins as well as 1 and 2 dollar notes, although we never have had a 25 cent (quarter) coin. These were phased out in the 1990's by the Keating government, if I remember correctly, for purely practical reasons and the changing value of the base metals in the smaller coins and the better longevity of the larger value coins over the notes (this was before plastic notes were common place). I can still remember trying to buy an ice cream from Mr Whippy using a mixture of pennies and cents. The one dollar note was equivalent to the 10 bob (shilling) note and the two dollars to the pound note - not that I had too many of those as a boy....

I sang it as I was reading this! How insane that we know the words still to a jingle that started airing in mid 1965!! Can't remember why I opened the fridge??? But I know all the words to the jingle! I used to complain about forgetting things...but I am awesome when a 1970 song would come on the radio. I would Say "Boom She La La Lo! Hans Poulsen 1971!!!!" My daughter turned to me after I got every song and year and said "I think I know why you forget stuff? Your brain is too full of old songs from 50 years ago!"

I remember the music used for the jingle was the old Australian bush ballad "Click Go The Shears" which I used to sing at school. I guess it was appropriate that the inventor of the improved sheep shearing handpiece, David Unaipon was featured on the $50 note.

We tend to light major bridges in major cities and also use the lighting to celebrate events. New South Wales (Blues) Harbour Bridge and Queensland (Maroons) Storey Bridge For example have a Footy ( Rugby League) 3 game annual event called State of Origin. Players are selected to represent the Australian state in which they played their first senior rugby league game (either high school or local senior club). The losing State usually lights it's bridge in the winning teams colours. The Opera House also has some quite amazing lighting to celebrate events.

I follow Ellie and enjoy her refreshing reactions to coming home and catching up with her extended family and the local culture. Melbourne four seasons weather is a fair bit different to her USA California experience but we are about to go into a heat cycle where she is going to face long hot days of 40+ C in Melbourne summers. There are also 40 kph speed limits around schools and electronic signs in heavy traffic areas that change to flashing 40 kph for an hour morning and afternoon around schools when children are travelling to and from school. Coffee time IS a time to catch up or just sit and enjoy and everyone in my family has their own espresso machine. Tap water in Melbourne is really clean (the water catchments are protected) and purified at the release point and 24 hours in an open container in the fridge gives you water that tastes perfect.

Yeah, I think most cities in Australia has pretty good drinking water, I drink it every day and I'm in Perth. I think we also have a pretty good coffee culture here as well, it's been a while since I was last in Melbourne but I do enjoy a good barista coffee, and I have my own deLonghi espresson maker. I don't recall the last time I drank instant.

@@utha2665 coffee culture is definitely Australia wide. I promise myself to make it to WA before I turn my toes up. We have the same brand espresso machines as yourself but unfortunately I haven’t mastered the milk frother so I use the Aldi milk frother appliance which is a cheap and heats milk to the right temp every time. Definitely better than the Turkish coffee I was addicted to as a child in the 1950’s 😆

G'day Ian, on the whole rounding up and down coz no pennies thing, as others have said, it sorts itself out in the end, and if you pay by card, you get charged whatever the price is, so if it's .52¢ you get charged .52¢...🥴 It was kinda funny when they first did away with the 1 & 2¢ coins (also known as coppers by the older generation), you'd see the old dears in the supermarket arguing with the checkout chicks, or they'd be going through the checkout multiple times just to make sure their items wouldn't be rounded,,, I saw one ol' bloke tryna game the system by only getting stuff that was ending in prices of 1 or 2¢ so it would be rounded down, thinking he was somehow getting one over on the supermarket...it was funny as 😆 All of the coins that ended up back at the reserve, and not still to this day in private hands/collections, were smelted down and became part of the Bronze medals for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.😃 🙃🐨🇦🇺

if you have been sent a Australian $5 or $10 note in the last 2 or so years, take a magnifying glass and look over the note. In micro writing, as a currency security feature, they have poems. The first of which was the $5 which had an Australian poem by banjo patterson. The man from snowy river. That was the first of the $5 with it. each release after that has different things. Pretty cool feature thats fun to try and find.

@@kimberleyw2429 the funny thing is how everyone I have ever met from SA is so defensive about the water and only drink it from the tap. I’m from Melbourne and agree Adelaide water taste different. I guess I just don’t like the thought of being pushed to buy bottled water and maybe I have gotten comfortable with our water quality.
