I'm from West Berlin (born shortly after the Wall was build) and of course I learned about the airlift at school and I know the airlift memorial at the former Tempelhof airport. But this video is so intense that tears still well up in my eyes today. We can't be grateful enough for this humanitarian aid after our atrocities. Thank you.

Hi Charles! A few more details should be added. West Berlin had the great advantage that a significant part of its area consisted of water (Großer Wannsee) and forest (Grunewald). Take a look at a map! That was also an invaluable advantage at a time when Berlin was divided and sealed off. Namely as a local recreation area... But that meant that during the blockade some wood could be felled for heating purposes. It also meant that areas were available on which food could be grown, even if the sandy soil in Brandenburg does not produce much... And all that water also meant a lot of fish, which also ended up on people's plates. The water also provided an area for seaplanes to land, which did not have to be unloaded at airfields. The British Short Sunderland, for example, had a seaplane payload of almost 13 tons, or 4 C 47s. And the British built almost 750 of them, up to 1945. One thing should be explained in more detail... The German economy was by no means completely destroyed after the war. This is partly because the vast majority of companies in Germany (and this is still the case today) are small and medium-sized family businesses with a maximum of 500 employees. What was really ruined after the war was primarily the transport infrastructure. This completely paralyzes the economy and the military. After the end of the war, the elite German business leaders immediately planned an export offensive, which was prohibited by the occupying powers. The Russians took a significant part of their sector's production to the Soviet Union in 1948, for example all of East Germany's bicycle production. Or they dismantled entire factories and took them away. The fate of the 6,000 tons of gold that belonged to the German Reich (the second largest gold reserve in the world) deserves special mention... When the Deutsche Mark was introduced in 1948, the exchange rate of the old Reichsmark was 1:65. That is awfully low! But compared to the hyperinflation after the First World War (which the staunch anti-communist confused), when a loaf of bread actually cost billions of the old imperial Mark, that was a joke...

This is of course a misrepresentation of the facts, because... The occupation zones had been agreed upon beforehand, when no one could have known how far the advance would go, and that was the only reason why the Western Allies withdrew. But if you insist... It was Roosevelt who made the deal with the devil. And fortunately for the Germans, he died before the war in Europe was over.
