Blackadder: You see, Baldrick, in order to prevent war in Europe, two superblocs developed: us, the French and the Russians on one side, and the Germans and Austro-Hungary on the other. The idea was to have two vast opposing armies, each acting as the other's deterrent. That way there could never be a war. Baldrick: But this is a sort of a war, isn't it, sir? Blackadder: Yes, that's right. You see, there was a *tiny* flaw in the plan. George: What was that, sir? Blackadder: It was bollocks.

The dialogue in Blackadder is just a constant stream of verbal wordplay, it is like nothing else I've ever seen. The two constants throughout all 4 series are Blackadder and Baldrick, but in series one it's Baldrick who's the smart one and though still a funny show it reached nothing like the heights of the later series. Everybody raves about Rik Mayall's two cameos as Flasheart in series two and four, there was one other cameo that ran him close, Tom Baker as Captain Rum in series two.
@Malaman1979
@Malaman1979 Жыл бұрын
Yea it's interesting that as the seasons go on Blackadder gets smarter and Baldrick gets more stupid. Also, Blackadders social status lowers as his family line continues in each series. Prince - Lord - Aide to the Prince - Army Captain.

A funny thing I ll mention about the Welsh. I am Welsh and I went out with my father to a friends farewell drink as he was changing jobs. Your reaction was brilliant. As a 60 year old British woman who grew up on this type of wit and humour, makes us a different breed. In Yorkshire its endearing to call one's spouse a "dickhead" and to criticism. I dare you to watch "One foot in the Grave" and some early "Coronation Street. One from the South and One from the North. We mean no harm and I apologise for any inappropriate content you may find offensive. Suck it up though and laugh.

I highly recommend watching the four Blackadder series (and the specials). It is genius. Each series a different historical time period. The first series is a bit iffy, but the second series finally finds its footing (the Elizabethan period). It's a glorious romp from there. And the fourth series actually has some poignant moments, especially the very end. It's really great!

Like 'Yes, Minister', whether or not you react to 'Blackadder', you have to watch it. 'The Commitments' is also a must see, be it for yourself or as a movie reaction. It combines your love of comedy and excellent music (The lead singer looks 30, sings like he's sung for 30 years, and was actually 15 when he auditioned and 16 when it was filmed!) I guarantee it will become a regularly revisited treasure for you too 😂🔥

@Abbadonhades
@Abbadonhades Жыл бұрын
@@alicemilne1444 Possibly because of the subject matter. Blackadder didn't need to be very clever, that character just had to be smarter than the people around him. It was the sarcasm and put-downs that made that show for me. Whereas in Yes minister, it's the operation of the bureaucracy, the wall of words created by Humphrey, and the political implications, that make it funny. How legitimate questions of policy and practicality are deflected, in favor of the "efficient" operation of the state apparatus.

Two shows you need to check out if you have not looked into them before, "Bottom" and "the fast show" both are awesomely funny, also if you get to watch the last episode of Blackadder goes forth it is the last two minutes and sums up the complete futility of War, be prepaid. its a heavy hitter.

Just so you know, Blackadder was a very short show, I think there were only like 6 episodes in a season

You really ought to watch all the full episodes of the 4 seasons of Blackadder - each set in a different historical period. They are hilarious - and these short clips are taken out of context. And while you are at it - all 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers with John Cleese -a masterpiece in comedy writing.

I once punished Adrian Edmondson for making rude gestures behind a teacher's back when we were at Pocklington School together. He was a first year and I was his Head of House. He's done alright despite that.

The four seasons of Blackadder - in four different periods of history - are amongst the best humour ever produced by Britain. If you ever get the chance to see them, you will enjoy them - especially Baldrick with his 'cunning plans'.
