The first of many comments to say that's not a Bakewell tart, it's a Battenburg cake. Afternoon tea is usually absurdly expensive , served in posh hotels and aimed at tourists. Most Brits have a mug of tea and a couple of biscuits around 4pm.

Most British people drink tea all day every day, with meals, with a snack or on its own. Afternoon tea is only for special occasions, it’s usually expensive and a treat. I am one of the minority that don’t often drink tea and prefer coffee. My parents very rarely washed the teapot but you rinse it out with hot water between each pot. Few people use a teapot these days unless for speciality teas and just put a teabag in the mug for the standard brew.

Although he said Bakewell Tart, the cake shown was actually a Battenberg cake - both are delicious I think most of us don't have afternoon tea more than once every few years at the very most - I'll be having some tomorrow with visiting family from the US but most of us work until after 5pm on a weekday. Many of us do have multiple cups of tea each day but without anything else (except perhaps a few biscuits). Cream tea, which is just the scone, cream and jam part with a pot of tea is probably a bit more common but still something most of us only do when on holiday.

We have afternoon tea (the full thing) about 3-4 times a year. We have smaller versions (just the scones, clotted cream and jam, with tea) during summer weekends, if we're home on a Saturday. Loads of places around here do them, from the garden centre to the lovely tea-room at Pevensey castle. We usually do ours at home and there's a lot of sharing of scone recipes between relatives. The full-on, fancy version here is a special occasion thing (Mother's Day, birthdays, etc) and usually more popular in summer.

The first cake is a Battenberg cake not a Bakewell Tart which has almonds on the top of it. Milk goes into tea not cream which is used for desserts and puddings. You don’t use a spoon for jam you use a spreader. Tom Parker-Bowles the narrator is the son of Camilla Queen Consort. Afternoon tea is more of a treat than a daily thing.

A Bakewell tart is an almond based cherry (though sometimes other fruit) frangipane tart, traditionally topped with flaked almonds. A Battenburg cake (what we actually saw when he confusingly said "Bakewell tart) is four long squares of sponge (of two different colours) held together with jam and marzipan which, when cut open, reveals a chessboard pattern.

That wasn't a Bakewell tart, it was a Battenburg. You should always warm the pot, put hot water and swirl, then throw away. Then put your loose tealeaves in and boiled water. All the paraphernalia is what makes afternoon tea the pleasure that it is.

For starters, Bakewell Tart is mentioned while we are being shown what looks like a Battenburg cake, though a later image corrects this mistake. Scones: being half Irish I always butter my scones before adding the jam, then the clotted cream in the Cornish tradition as I now live in Kernow (that's Cornwall btw).

The tea was made without warming the pot. I was always told to warm the pot first by filling it with a small amount of boiling water, swilling it around and leaving the pot for a short time before emptying and only then spooning in the tea.

I work in a pretty low-paid job. I am definitely working class. However, I do use a teapot and a milk jug. I have a strainer that comes with a holder. I have cutlery and side plates. I most definitely DON'T have servants to wash the dishes. It takes no time at all. And, no, I don't wash the inside of my teapot. I rinse it out after use and let it drain dry. It's not posh or faffy, it's just a nice, civilised way to have tea, a sandwich and a slice of cake.

A proper afternoon tea is a treat rather than a daily thing, and it’s always nice to enjoy it at a good tearooms of which there are some really great ones. In North Yorkshire close to where I live there is one on the best. I also have a tea set for home use on special occasions. I usually have six or so varieties of tea, though my personal favourites are Darjeeling or Earl Grey, both of which I prefer with a slice of lemon rather than milk or cream. I do like coffee, but only fresh ground Italian beans. Incidentally, I believe the narrator of this video is Tom Parker-Bowles, Queen Camilla’s son.

"Stands the Church clock at ten to three, And is there honey still for tea?" Afternoon tea certainly was at one time a normal everyday thing, but a much simpler affair than shown here at Fortum & Mason, London's poshest department store, where it would be mainly aimed at tourists, those up from the country for a day's shopping and very cashed up Londoners. But when I was growing up in the 50s, at around 4pm the family would gather and just sit down at the kitchen table and there would be a loaf of bread or two (brown and white) set out on the wooden bread-board with a bread-knife to cut it (no sliced bread in those days!), with butter, jam, honey and Marmite in various little pots and jars to spread on it. Yes, in our house we did have designated jam spoons - it was considered uncouth to stick your buttery knife straight into the jam or honey. There was also a butter dish but this was where the butter lived anyway, never in a fridge. My mother would usually have baked a cake of some kind and there'd probably be biscuits too - either bought or home-made. In December on Sundays we would have 'Advent Tea'. There were special prayers and on the first Sunday one candle was lit in the darkened room. Each Sunday another candle was added, making our shadows on the wall increase in number too, until by Christmas Day the room was a blaze of light - all symbolic of course, of the entry of Light into the World. it was a lovely tradition, very atmospheric. Almost every country town in England has a teashop where you can get some version of afternoon tea, from just a pot of tea for one to the full spread - but at a fraction of the price of the posh London version. When I lived in Devon, we would go out every weekend for a 'cream tea' which the West Country is famous for. They were relatively inexpensive and delicious, just fresh baked scones, clotted cream and jam, and sometimes honey. The posh London places stole idea from them and embellished it into into the big, luxurious affair that they promote to the tourists as a quintessentially British experience. But the real thing as far as I'm concerned is - or was - in the teashops and around the kitchen tables of ordinary people, all over Britain.

Not washing the tea pot is a regular old-world kind of thing and I could definitely see someone about the age of Paul McCartney saying. Typically what happens in homes (that use tea pots) is that water is boiled with the first bit of water from the kettle being used to clean out the tea pot and warm it up. The fresh leaves or tea bags are then put into the pot before it is filled with boiling water. The pot is then left until the next round of tea is to be made and the whole process repeats. Most people will generally just make tea in a mug (like the one you showed) with a tea bag. If you are having tea without milk you generally don't want to have the bag in the mug for very long. The longer you let it sit, the stronger the flavor and the more bitter the undertone. If you are wanting to avoid using milk, green tea or herbal teas are probably a better choices. While most Brits will have 'afternoon tea' on rare occasions as an activity we might have with visiting friends, we drink tea all the time normally at home with many people having three or four mugs a day. As a side note there is also 'builders tea' which is a very strong brew of a fairly common tea like Tetley or Yorkshire Tea served with milk (usually whole milk) and sugar (in order to combat the very bitter aftertaste).

The afternoon tea, as shown is a once in a lifetime treat. It is way too expensive to be a regular thing although I guess the wealthy may do it more often. Most people are far too busy to sit down, even at home, for afternoon tea. They will just make a brew and a snack whenever they need one.

You’re quite right about not washing the teapot, just as you don’t wash a cast iron frying pan, the tannins in the tea build a patina on the inside which gives body and depth to the flavour of the tea. If you drink tea without milk or sugar, brew it for a shorter time. The milk and sugar help to counterbalance the bitterness. Also, remember that during the Edwardian period (1901-1910 ish) Britain (and her Empire) was the World’s only Superpower.

If you brew loose tea it helps solve that issue of bitterness as it usually comes from low quality tea bags, especially if you push it against the side of your mug to push water out of it. You're not supposed to push the water out of your tea bag between the spoon and side of your mug/cup if you wish to avoid the bitterness. Also at home it's usually just with a couple bisuits (cookies but firmer than actual 'cookies' and different shapes to cookies sometimes too)

The narrator is HRH The Queen's son - Tom Parker-Bowles is the son of Queen Camilla. He's a well regarded 'foodie' and has built his own career separate from his mother's marital life. The afternoon tea you just watched was a 'once in a lifetime' type of afternoon tea for most Brits. Mostly aimed at people wanting an 'experience' so used by Brits for big birthday treats etc, and by toursts all the time because- well, because. Most Brits drink either tea or coffee. I'm a tea drinker. I'm always having a 'brew' - which may or may not be at 4pm. That will include a tea bag of Yorkshire Tea, some skimmed milk but not too much - we are aiming for a deep tan shade - and maybe a digestive biscuit to dunk.

I'm British, 64 years old, very middle class. I have never been for an afternoon tea. Outside of tourist areas and hotels, you be hard pressed to find anywhere that serves it. I have had a cup of tea and a cake. Also, when on special occasions, birthdays and the like or when one has visitors, a tea has been served, but nothing like the spread shown here. At £50 to £80 per person in the aversge establishment going up to £500 in the some luxury hotels, I think the price is excessive. Hence, you'll find places that do serve it are full of tourists and people celebrating something special. Having said all this pn my next trip to Harrogate or York, I intend to book an afternoon tea in Betty's. Supposedly, one of the best afternoon teas and at £18.50 much better value than those London hotels😂

Afternoon tea as a ritual started with aristocrats who in most cases were brought up eating very small portion sizes as their formal meals consisted of several courses. I assume that this was the case with afternoon tea, tiny bite sized portions eaten slowly. Today its a treat and rather pricey so the amount of food served is more abundant and doggie bags are provided for customers so that some of the uneaten delicacies can be taken home. Either way I don't think you would get fat on afternoon tea here, too expensive to eat every day. Most Brits would have a cup of tea and maybe a slice of cake or a couple of biscuits in the afternoon at home.

This sort of high tea is very much a treat now and then. Oddly i am going to a Harry Potter themed tea with my mother and nieces on Sunday. I have done tea at number of London stores and hotels but F&M is the best. They have 3 main menus between £72 and £76 per head, two sweet and one savory. The tea menu to chose from has about 20 different teas inc. one with rose petals in it. I was warned not to have lunch and so glad i didn't. The food never stopped coming we must have been there over 1 half hours. And they always make sure there are some cakes left even if yo say no more. As they give you little boxes to take them home in. Expensive Yes but God it was soooo worth it. Another good one is the Langham Hotel near the BBC.

There are lots of different teas which differ by taste, some people take black tea with lemon or orange to take the bitterness instead of milk, or you can get teas with orange in the blend like lady grey, then there are Smokey teas like lapsang

Jam first, then cream. It's the only way it works.

It's a splendid way of whiling away those tricky hours between after-lunch and before-dinner, when the only other alternative would be to keep pounding the feet "making the most of the day". Afternoon tea with its ceremony, fine tea and tempting morsels has therefore become a part of "making the most of the day", and acts and a good run up to gin and tonics after before-dinner, and then of course dinner itself.

If your tea is bitter, you are probably brewing it too long. I too drink black tea without milk, cream or sugar, and I brew it really briefly, not much longer than a minute. Milk combats the bitter notes in tea brewed longer.

With the jam and cream, do what I do. Break the scone in half in the customary fashion. On one half, apply cream then jam. On the other half, apply jam then cream. By this means, no one, be they Cornish or from Devon, is offended (or maybe both are?).

Growing up we had afternoon tea on a Saturday and Sunday but Sundy was in the evening because it was also the Sunday Roast. So tea time was around 6pm after playing board games or cards or at the same time if Monopoly was involved lol

Tbh I think the majority of brits use electric kettles now instead of teapots for convenience. But yes I think to wash a teapot you're supposed to just use hot water. Similar principle to not using dish soap in a wok because it washes away the flavour.

There is a difference between Afternoon Tea and High Tea. This I would say is High Tea, not sure how many these days use the term High Tea but it is what it is

High tea would usually have a cooked element, such as eggs on toast to make a more substantial meal.

Try adding Honey if you dont want sugar also sweat rice flour cakes in place of normal flour can be used as for a less bitter Tea don't leave it in the mug/cup so long, if your having it black just stir the bag around 4-5 times and take it out

nah we may have a cuppa (anytime of the day)but this is not something that we do regularly. Mother’s day or a birthday. It’s tourists that seem to do this

When I was young in the late 70's / early 80's, my family had this sort of tea every Sunday without fail. Cake, sandwiches, drink of your choice - from tea, coffee, pop or fruit juice, crisps amongst other delicious items.

Hi Stephen, afternoon tea was only on Sunday in our house too. Crumpets and fancies (do you remember them?). The only other time we dragged out the cups and saucers, teapot and doilies was when Great Aunt May - surely every family must have one - came to visit.

Always jam on your scone first as it's more solid, then the clotted cream, if cream was first the jam would just slide off! 😁❤️. As I work a full week I just drink a mugs of tea all day with a few biscuits! Last cuppa about 8pm!

That was a Battenburg cake not a Bakewell tart. I love loose leaf tea. It tastes much better than tea bags although I do use them. Always, always warm the pot first and although this might make people throw their hands up in horror, I put the milk in first. I can't drink tea if it's strong and it has to be very hot. These videos about afternoon tea are very misleading. The big Hotels that do it charge a fortune so it's a special occasion thing. In reality, I personally have about 5 or 6 cups (mugs) of tea a day and either some biscuits or, if I've made a cake, then I'll have that. Tea and cake is so good 😊
