I'm not sure you're a true brit to be honest if you can't wait to get home after your long shift at the marmite factory, drop your put-on British accent and shout 'well gosh darnit it gee-whizz, Imma get me some mac 'n' cheese real quick'. I am getting on in life, but recently had a flush of conscience about the names I used to call my best friend at school, who is of a different ethnic group to me, I have carried the guilt for many years, but it got so bad I tackled it with her, and apologised. Her response "No, no, I KNEW it was through deep affection!" 50 years on, we are still best friends.

What a wonderful way to start a Friday morning! Thanks Joel. So, now try saying my former sister regiment's name: "The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment." It makes saying Worcestershire Sauce easy. In 2007, the WFR was amalgamated into the present-day Mercian Regiment, which is why I said former. Nothing beats an English breakfast. It's been standard fare in the Canadian Army forever. So, when in England I go from pub to pub comparing their breakfasts. Great fun! Have a wonderful Coronation weekend everyone, John in Canada

Americans do need to learn how to take the piss better though. Aussies and the Irish have it down. Great piss takers. I'd go as far as to say some of the best piss-takers around today are probably Australian. It probably has something to do with the constant state of heat stroke wearing down their internal filter. You just don't want to get into a piss-taking match with an Australian they know their stuff.

Very true. As a rule, a pickle should be avoided at all costs. Americans, conversely, LOVE pickles. I don't know if they too sometimes get in a pickle but they do like them in sandwiches. They have been known to hoard the left-over brine or 'pickle juice' in case the government tries to take it from them. Strange folk.

The reason why the US and the UK are compared to each other, and are talked about a lot in the respective nations is because we are actually closer than we like to admit and therefore the small differences are always going to be more shocking/worth talking about because no one expects there to be a difference in the first place.

There is no contest between canned beans on white bread or American biscuits with sausage gravy. A slice of bread, bland but fine, canned beans, bland but fine, or you can have a hot, buttery, flaky biscuit with a peppery white gravy (which is nothing less than a thickened French béchamel but without onions or nutmeg) and plenty of crumbled breakfast sausage.

"Choozday" is a consequence of the way Brits pronounce the long 'u'. We yanks (usually) say 'oo', but the Brits most say 'yoo' after unvoiced consonants, especially 't' (but we both say 'cute' and 'puke' with 'yoo'. Language is weird). Ride the tyoob, not the toob. Sing a tyune. Tewkesbury is 'tyooksbuhree' (or 'tyooksb'ree). And for many, 'tyoob' and 'tyoozday' will end up as 'choob' or 'choozday' without even realizing there's a difference; we all have blind spots in our own accents (like the kid in this video who can't see the problem with choozday and also pronounces 'th' as 'f', technically called 'th-fronting' by linguists. Maybe he's from Chooksbree). It is somehow comforting that even the Brit kids can't pronounce Worcestershire (or, probably, Cholmondeley). They're of course fine with Leicester and probably Gloucester (which is a common cheese and a London street, at least). I think that over the last 50 years or so, Americans have been increasingly exposed to television shows like Doctor Who and the like, and so we are generally more aware of the language and other cultural differences. The Brits have been watching American television for ages, of course. In the late '80s, I visited London for a very short time. One annoying kid heard my accent, and made fun of me by badly imitating the Robert Culp character from the TV series 'Greatest American Hero', seemingly his model for All Things American. "Asking for directions! Imagine that Scenario!' Yeah, a laugh riot, kid, thanks for the 'help'. Ages ago, the late English television personality and writer David Frost, on his American comedy show, once compared 'Nooyawkeez' ("New York-ese") with 'Frawffly Goo Denglish' ("frightfully good English" in an excessive posh English accent). Alas, I don't remember most of the funny 'translations' except for the New York newsstand owner shouting 'Water yer reed, water yer reed'. "She is not offering horticultural advice, but is inquiring as to preferred reading matter." (What do you read?)

That biscuits and gravy is from below the Mason-Dixon line. In the North, Yankees, we eat biscuits with either butter or jam/jelly. Biscuits might also be served with dinner and ordinary beef or chicken gravy. Accents, too many Britishers when trying an American accent opt for a "southern type" or a modified New York City / North Jersey accent.

It goes to show the divergance when we both had school shootings ing the 90s. We chose to crack down on gun ownsership while the US doubled down and now look, it speaks volumes!
