My secondary School overlooked one of the major English cricket grounds and I paid ONE CENT to watch The Final Tea Time session of the 3 Day County matches there. If we talk about the traditional English domestic game or The Matches over 5 days against rival Nations (TEST matches) the typical team will have 5 specialist Batsmen then one "All-Rounder" who is good at Batting and Bowling, but not Top Class, a Wicket Keeper(the most active player when his side are fielding) and 4 specialist Bowlers who, inevitably, bat at the end of the Batting Order as some can bat well but their job is really bowling. Ignore Baseball now and clear your mind. A Bowler bowls 6 legitimate balls from one END of the pitch. After the first OVER is complete second Bowler bowls from the other END of the pitch. Bowlers can bowl from either END as much as they want but not 2 successive overs. If they had the strength(impossible) in theory, a bowler could bowl half his team's overs in the opposing team's innings. Whereas ALL 11 Players get to bat ( however good/poor they are ) a Captain will only expect around half of his team to bowl as 95% of Batters ONLY bat. At the end of an innings, the Batsmen will have faced an equal amount of OVERS from each of the 2 ENDS....:)

Copy and pasted from my post on Patreon as I watched the video: Just to let you know before I start watching the video, it looks like the IPL (Indian Premier League) is starting again after the mid-season suspension because of COVID. First match back is on SKY on Sunday so not sure what channels or networks you will need to watch it. It might have some matches live on KZbin(?), I don't know haven't looked yet. Anyway I will now watch your video and edit as I go. :P There I didn't go far before my first edit, did I lol? One thing you need to know about India and Pakistan, they hate each other. I don't just mean they are rivals, they REALLY don't like each other. So much so that they haven't had a match between each other except for in tournaments for years. When they meet in them, they have had pitch invasions just so that they isn't a result if one team is winning. Any player can play in any position (the different positions are complicated and have certain names so I will get into that later or I will post a video if I can find one explaining them). The only position that remains the same player through the innings is the WICKETKEEPER, he stands behind the wicket and catches the ball if the batsman misses it. All the others can change throughout the innings and you can change your field at any time. The only change to this is in One Day or 20/20 (both known as 'white ball' games as they use a white ball instead of the red ball) where there is a 30 yard circle inside the field of play and you must have so many players inside the circle. They might explain this later as I am editing this as I watch the video. The bowlers are simply players that can bowl so you can have as many as you want. Some might be part time bowlers, not really classed as a bowler but can bowl a bit if needed. Bowlers are split in to 2 types, Pace and Spin with spinners split into a further 2 types, Wrist and Finger spin. Pace bowlers will take a long run-up and try to get the batsman out using speed and bounce with the fastest bowling around 90mph. Spinners take a short run-up and really on the spin deceiving the batsman, spinners will bowl up to about 55-60mph. Pace bowlers can also get swing which is the ball curving in the air to deceive the batsmen, also they can bowl bouncers (a short ball that bounces and get head height, they used to call them bumpers) and yorkers (which are balls aimed at the feet of the batsman to try and get under the bat. A bowler can bowl any amount of overs in a test match (5 day game), they can bowl 10 overs in a one day 50 over match (if it is a 40 over One Day Match they can bowl 8 overs each) and in a 20/20 20 over match they can bowl 4 overs each. So simply in a one day or 20 over match a bowler can bowl one-fifth of the total overs so you have to use at least 5 bowlers but you can use more if you want but none can bowl over the limit. The problem with test cricket now is that it is only England and Australia that take it serious anymore. The main test series as always been the Ashes that is plyed between England and Australia every 2 years alternating between each country. In fact we are meant to be playing it in Australia this winter but whether it will go ahead I'm not sure. As you say the shorter forms are more popular and just more affordable and you get a result in 3 hours with T20 and 6 hours for a one dayer. Also although they say US dropped the English games, they really just changed them a little and made there own forms. Baseball (by the way there was a football ground in England called the Baseball Ground, it was Derby County's home ground. It was original built to feature baseball but it never took off) is a form of cricket. American Football is just Rugby really isn't it for people who can't take a hit unless they have a ton of padding. In India cricket is treated as a religion and the cricketers as almost gods literally. They are mad about it. Every boy and man knows cricket and loves it. Virat kohli is currently the best player in cricket. He is not only a superstar of India but flag bearer of cricket in outside world. U should definitely check him out. As far as football in India goes it is not as popular as cricket but still there are more passionate and crazy football fans than any European nations. especially in states of kerala, goa, kolkata, assam and northeast. Their madness towards European and local clubs is unmatched. Eventhough we as footballing nation is not good as we should be but the love for the beautiful game is not less. We also happen to have 2 century old clubs with the biggest rivalry in Asia. And 3rd oldest tournament in the world.

Oh look, it's very simple: You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in, and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in, and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out, he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time, and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including the not outs, that's the end of the game.

Each team will have a number of bowlers, each specialising in a different bowling technique. When any one bowler is in play, the others form part of the fielding team. And the team captain will decide at times during the match to "rest" a particular bowler (who still has to field) and put another bowler in play. And because the bowlers are part of the 11 man team, they also have to know how to bat, since each team member has to take a turn as batsman. The best batsmen are usually put into play first, and the bowlers later on, although there are some "all-rounders" who are good at both.

As others point out, it's usual for a cricket team to have ~5 bowlers, two of whom will bowl for a longish stretch before the others take over. This minimises fatigue, but also adds variety, and exploits the various skill-sets possesed by different kinds of bowler: The opening pair of bowlers will typically be "fast bowlers", whose technique is suited to the fresh cricket balls used at the start of every innings. Fresh cricket balls are harder, more aerodynamic, and have more bounce; characteristics that can be exploited by fast-bowlers to devastating effect. As the ball gets more worn as the innings progresses, the next set of bowlers - usually "medium-pace" specialists - are brought on. Their bowling techniques will typically get more out of an aging ball than a fast-bowler can. As the ball gets softer and more worn, a third kind of bowler - typically "spin-bowlers" - take over, as their technique of spinning the ball works most effectively with an older ball's interaction with an "older" pitch. Eventually, the old ball will become so worn that it's replaced by a fresh one, and the fast-bowlers are brought on again. In test cricket, new balls are brought into play every 80 overs. It's not quite as rigid as that, but it's broadly the gist. The key take-away is that there are different styles of bowler, each with their own strengths, which may be deployed tactically depending on the conditions and how the game is going.

To go and watch you pick a day or two (out of the 5) when you hope you may see some good action, take a picnic and just enjoy the atmosphere and if you are lucky some cricket as well. If the cricket is a bit dull some a merry crowd can provide more entertainment. (certainly in England where there are no limits on alcohol consumption!!!). The Test format can be thrilling as there a lot of time invested in one game and there so many factors that can change and influence strategy. If you are looking to watch a game, one of the most exciting in recent years in the one day format is the 2019 World cup final between NZ and England. I don't know if you can get the whole game but highlights the "last over" is available on KZbin.

What he didn,t explain is, at the end of an over, another bowler bowls at the other batsman at the opposite set of stumps. When his over is finished, the first bowler has another over from his end of the pitch. This is called a bowlers spell, and lasts until the captain decides to replace him with a third bowler. Most teams have 4or5 good bowlers but most of the rest are adequate. Btw the first international match was between the USA and Canada in 1844.

Correct about substitute bowlers. For example, in 50 over match, one bowler can bowl a maximum of 10 overs none of which can be consecutive. And most teams have like 4 designated bowlers and then a 5th position that can be bowled by an all-rounder who is someone who is good at both batting and bowling.

A cricket team consists of 6 batting specialists and 5 or 6 bowlers. Usually the two best batsmen bat first, as they're expected to score the most runs. There's usually one batsman who is also a decent bowler and is classed an all-rounder. Each bowler will have a different technique eg spin, pace, slow. Two bowlers will bowl alternate overs for a length of time, then the captain gives them a rest while two other bowlers take over. The condition of the pitch or ground (area between the two wickets) can critically influence the bowlers' efforts to get the batsman out. I suggest you look at some slow motion footage of how the ball travels through the air once it's left the bowler's hand. Fascinating.

In cricket everyone has to bat but not everyone has to bowl. There are pace bowlers (varieties of fast and medium) and spin bowlers, there is a wicket keeper (similar to a catcher in baseball) batters and all-rounders. Wicket keepers have the role of wicket keeping and most modern keepers are expected to be good batters as well. Batters may sometimes bowl (depends how bored or desperate the captain is as they choose the bowler for each over) but their main role is to be good at scoring runs. There are opening batters (they are the 2 that will start the innings) and middle order batters which generally bat between 3rd and 6th with the keeper normally being 7th. All-rounders are the only players that are expected to be good at both batting and bowling, some may bowl spin while others may bowl pace. All-rounders aren't overly common there's normally only 1 or 2 in a team as they take the spot of a batter or bowler and generally they aren't as good as someone who specialises in those roles. Pace bowlers are normally quite tall and wicket keepers are generally quite short but there are some players that don't fit the typical build and for spin bowlers and batters it doesn't really matter how tall they are as height can provide pros and cons in those roles

The field can be any shape or size, and is rarely oval. It is rarely level, it can have bumps, ridges, or crowns in it: there may even be the occasional tree. Obviously, it is the same for both sides, and that is all that matters. Bowlers are specialists, and are broadly of three types: fast bowlers (they have a straight run-up and try to deceive the batsman by pace, or sometimes un-nerve them by targeting their body); swing bowlers (medium pace with straight or slightly oblique run-ups who try to deceive by getting the ball to move from side-to-side in the air, a bit more slowly, and with more variation in speed and direction); spin bowlers, who have short run-ups (often only a few paces and concealed from the batsman behind the umpire) who bowl slowly, but get the ball to move unexpectedly off the bounce. However, bowlers only have six consecutive deliveries (the over), then another bowler has an over from the other end of the wicket, the first bowler taking up a fielding position. A bowler will usually have a “spell”, during which they return every other over for a period of time, determined by the team Captain. Attacking bowling takes place when the fielding side is primarily trying to get wickets. Defensive bowling is when the primary objective is to make it difficult for the batting side to score runs. Anybody on the fielding side is allowed to bowl (except the 12th man, or substitute, who can only field). The wicket keeper almost never does, though, because he is all padded up for close catching, and somebody else would have to pad up to take his place, were he to bowl. Limited overs cricket is perversion. 50 overs games have some limited interest, but T20 is vile: I would never watch it, let alone pay to see it.

A team of 11 usually consists of 6 batsmen, 1 wicketkeeper (wears the pads behind the stumps (wicket)) and 4 bowlers. ALL of the 11 bat but the best batsmen start the innings. A score of 100 runs by a batsman is considered a milestone. Only 10 batsman need to get out as there needs to be 2 batsmen in the middle at a time. A bowler bowls 6 balls (an over) from 1 end then another bowler bowls 6 balls from the other end. A captain can place fieldsmen anywhere on the field in Test matches (up to 5 days). There are restrictions in T20 and T50 games A score of 4/150 is 4 wickets out and 150 runs scored. A team must choose when to be aggressive in their hitting according to the number of batsmen out and the runs scored otherwise their side might be ALL bowled out with a low score that the opposition can easily chase. Hope that helps.

In non-limited overs cricket (i.e. Tests) a bowler can bowler as many overs as they are physically capable. The only rule is they can't bowl two consecutive overs. So you need to have a minimum of two bowlers, one bowling from each end.

I don't know a lot about cricket, but I know it is full of subtleties. Bowlers have different qualities, some are fast, some apply spin, others pitch the bounce in awkward places. The captain of the team will select the bowler he thinks will have the best chance of getting the batsman out. But he can't keep using the same man as he will get tired. A great deal of thought has to be applied, especially on the long test matches. He will also vary the position of the fielders, their positions are not absolutely fixed.

The bowler cannot bowl from the 'exact' middle of the pitch because that is where the wicket is and the bowler's end umpire stands a short way behind that wicket. The bowler can bowl from either side of the wicket but cannot make contact with that wicket as he/she runs up to bowl and it is not in his or her interests to block the view of the umpire. What the video glosses over is that at the end of an over of six legal deliveries by bowler #1 a different bowler (#2) will bowl the next over from the OTHER end of the pitch; the wicket-keeper has to go to the other end and in general terms the fielders rearrange themselves 180 degrees to fit the change of end. At the end of this over the #1 bowler can bowl again from the original end. The number of overs bowled by individual bowlers varies according to type. A fast bowler with a long run up may only ball 4-8 overs in a spell before taking a break from bowling. A slow bowler might bowl 10, 12, 16 overs assuming he/she is bowling well and the captain is happy with what is being bowled. A common formula for traditional cricket teams would be something like 6 specialist batsmen, a wicket-keeper/batsman, and 4 specialist bowlers; say 3 quicker bowlers and a slow spinner. Ideally for an even better balance you would have an all-rounder who is skilled in batting and bowling; these players, if successful, are particularly highly-valued; but as the the expression has it; 'they don't grow on trees.'

With the bowling, it depends on the form of cricket. In limited overs, a bowler can only bowl a certain number where as in a test it’s unlimited. 2 bowlers alternate between overs. Generally spin bowlers can bowl for a longer spell at a time than fast bowlers because they’re not running in etc

This year there was a cricket tournament in the UK called 'the hundred' which had an Americanised feel to it and I believe was considered a commercial success. It was nice and short but the play style in a short game is completely different to the style in a test game. Very few people actually watch all of a test match most people just either go for a day or tune in occasionally to keep apprised of the score.

Tea breaks in cricket is like morning tea at work. To help you understand how cricket is played it's best to forget about baseball as it may have somethings similar to cricket, like getting caught out can have many ways you may not be caught out, etc. To help you understand how cricket is played it might pay to google how it's played as that can give you a more comprehensive explanation on how cricket is played, how to score runs, how innings are played, about the bowlers, batsmen, the positions played, how the ground they play on is marked out. You may not know all the rules of baseball but not many people other than players know all the rules of cricket, myself included. Once you get a better understanding of how the game is played the more you will enjoy it.

As an ex-bowler (medium pace left arm swing), the oblique angle taken to the crease - The Line Beyond Which You Must Not Bowl (or you will get a No-Ball penalty) gives better chance to swing the ball towards the batsman (sorry - we don't have a better word - yet) or away from her/him. Angling the ball is designed to force the batsman to defend the wicket or tempt him/her to swing at it outside the line of the stumps. Either way, it gives a chance for an edge off the bat so the batsman may be caught out. I should really include a glossary.

A few facts: 1. Cricket and baseball were about as popular as each other in the United States until about 1900, which was obviously a long time after the US became independent from the UK, so the colonial thing probably isn't an explanation for that. 2: Test cricket is still a profitable business in England, Australia and a few other countries, particularly when the best teams and players are playing each other. Pakistan vs India will get big crowds, for instance. 3. People say 5 day cricket is a bit silly, but they forget that golf tournaments also take place over many days.

If the bowler was directly in front of the batsman they would fall over the stumps at the other end. Bowlers bowl in one of 2 delivery styles over the wicket where the delivery arm is on the stump side of your body or around the wicket where the delivery comes from the arm furthest from the stumps. When you come in to bat or when the bowler changes the umpire will tell you what is going to be coming at you (eg right arm over) to allow you to choose your guard (where on the crease you stand) and adjust any sight screens (big white/black panels that give a good background to see the ball against) appropriately. What the ball does in the air or off the pitch that is for the bowler to know and you to find out. Bowling is a specialised role, more so than baseball. A side will usually want at least 4 bowlers in the 11 and those will be a mix of different styles probably 3 fast and one slow and the 3 fast bowlers will be different as well in if and how they move the ball in the air (swing) or off the pitch (seam). There is even more variety in slow (spin) bowlers but it is quite rare to see more than one in a team outside India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka. For a good team you will also hope to have an all rounder, a player who both bowls and bats but genuine all rounders (one who scores more runs per wicket than they concede) are rare so often even Test sides don’t have one. At least 5 members of the team are chosen just for their batting and the 11th man will be a wicket keeper (the only specialist fielder). If you don’t have an all rounder for a limited overs game you will need a 5th bowler (probably a 4th fast(ish) bowler) for a single or double innings game you will take a 6th batsman.

OK - team players in cricket. Eleven players per side, one is the designated WICKET KEEPER - the equivalent of the baseball catcher, they stand behind the stumps and retrieve every ball that batsmen fail to hit. Wicket Keepers very rarely bowl, but as everyone else in the side, they do have to bat. Then we have players who are good at batting (BATSMEN) and do nothing else, players that are good at bowling (BOWLERS) and do nothing else and some players who are competent at both skills, who are deemed ALL ROUNDERS - they can bat and bowl. When a team is fielding/bowling, balls are delivered in sets of six, called an over. Though technically every person within the fielding side CAN bowl, its usually only those who can do it really well and there's typically four or five in each side. So a team may comprise six batsmen, a wicket keeper and four bowlers. Overs are bowled from alternate ends of the pitch initially by, say, bowler A and bowler B. After a while, say half a dozen overs each, these bowlers may be replaced by bowlers C and D but they can return at any time to bowl again. In TEST cricket there is no limit to the number of overs an individual can bowl and in some innings, bowlers may be called upon to bowl 20, 30 or even 40 overs. In limited over cricket, bowlers can only bowl a maximum of four overs in a 20-overs match, or 10 overs in a 50-overs match - both of those variants of the game are completed in one day. Test match cricket is the hardest, lasting potentially up to the end of the maximum allowed five days. :-) OH - and cricket in INDIA and PAKISTAN is GIGANTIC!

Hi, I think something you are missing when looking at cricket vs baseball is the pitch (ground/field). Forgive my ignorance but does it make much difference in baseball where you play? In cricket it does, some pitches are good for fast bowling (often West Indies and Australia), some are good for Medium Pace with Swing (England) and some are best for Slow with Spin (India). I get the impression that a good pitcher plays as well at any field? Not so for Bowlers. You asked about do all players have to Bowl, no. All player bat. Its very rare that all a players will bowl, as a minimum a team must have 2 bowlers in alder to alternate them, in limited overs games (T20 or 40/50/60 overs games) there is a limit on the number of overs each bowler can deliver, this means a team must have 5 bowlers, most players 'can' bowl.

To answer your question about bowlers; yes, in theory you could just keep swapping a pair of bowlers at either end of the pitch after each over - and that does in fact tend to happen for long spells. But bowling is a hard, physical effort, and after a while, you'll almost certainly want to give another "fresh" bowler a go. You should ideally have at least three or for experienced bowlers in your team in order to give them all a spell at bowling.

Technically anybody can bowl, but in reality it is specialist. In one day/t20 you have to have 5 people bowl, but not in 5 day cricket. But the reality is you can't bowl all day. So yes a player does swap back in alternate overs, so 2 bowlers will bowl multiple overs between them. Then one or both will be swapped out for a set of overs. Then they normally swap back.

I just check the scores from time to time and if it starts to get interesting, I watch it for few hours. 1 day of test cricket has 3 sessions of 2 hours each. The 3rd session gets extended to 2-3 hrs coz 90 overs needs to be bowled in 1 day and if sun sets u can't play. If ur in the stadium, it's like a picnic. U have to take a day off to watch test cricket. But most of test cricket is scheduled to include weekends. It's fun.
