Great stuff. DC was probably the best ever in his position and played a game against the Lions where he did everything and could be described as the perfect 10. First five or first five-eighth is very much as southern hemisphere description for fly-half or stand-off, as we tend to call it in the northern hemisphere. It is because it is half way between a half and three quarters: The Kiwis tend to name the backline as half back (scrum half); first five or first five-eighth (fly-half); second five or second five-eighth (inside centre); three quarter (outside centre); wings and then full-back. I am an old man now (well 56) and after playing rugby all my life in the UK until I went to work in Hong Kong in 1994, the first game I played out there as a flanker the captain told me to just hit the first five. I didn't have a bloody clue what he was talking about!

@Jonwallachio8 ай бұрын
Not quite, that's what they're called in NZ. In Australia it's '#10 = Five-eight, #12 =inside centre, #13= outside centre.' The term Five eight is actually the more original, older term. Fly half is slightly newer but still really old and comes out of Wales. Five eight refers to the distance the player is from the ruck. It's also where terms like half back and full back come from. I.e. the fly half is slightly further back than the half back, so five eights of the way back, while the full back is all the way back lol. Getting into really obscure rugby history here. It's also where the term quarter back and full back come from in NFL btw, holdouts from old rugby terminology.

He is a true grand master of our game. It's not quite clear to see his genius just from these clips as he was not the most dynamic player, unlike say B. Barrett but he had this ability to keep defenders guessing with what I call his 'half step'. He would stand in such a way that by offsetting his position by just half a meter to one side or another he could create just enough doubt as to whether he was going to pass, kick, take the line etc. He was also a surgeon with the boot, missing very few kicks with something like a 98% success rate. He was also hugely successful at calling clutch plays and generally dictating the pace and style of the game and would switch it up during those crucial moments to swing momentum to the All Blacks favour. He was also very calm and collected and had a solidifying effect on the kiwis. As you can gather from a lot of the comments we Boks hold him in very high regard and was a true beacon of the game, unlike Richie McCaw who did not play the game in its intended spirit even though he was an extremely good player and is showered with accolades, but we'll talk about him when you do his highlights. Dan Carter you beauty!!!

@@QSNggjonny was best tackling flyalf of all time. Probably the best kicking off both feet whether for posts or for touch and he had equal distance with left and right foot and could hit drop goals equally well with both feet. Nobody in the game practiced harder or longer. He was a perfectionist and became obsessed after a while. Also the fittest guy in every England team he played in. Nobody came close to his fitness scores. He outworked everybody. Only fault, if u could call it a fault, he wasn't the fastest runner. A lot of fly halves were faster runners than him. He arguably played his best rugby when he left the restrictive style of play he was expected to play for England and moved to France for the last 3 or 4 years of his career and played club rugby for Toulon where he is still considered an adopted son. The French usually don't like the English but he was the 1 exception. They loved him in the South of France. He was made captain and under his leadership they won multiple European championships. He was also a fluent French speaker and last year the club inducted him into their rugby hall of fame, only 1 of 2 foreign players to get this award, the other being former springbok Joe Van Niekerk who after finishing his rugby in France moved to the jungles of Costa Rica and became Jungle Joe.

Like the video is named, he just "made it look easy" with his fancy-pants style, his flair. He was invited to the Patriots to have a "look around"! He went, but he said (so he said), thanks but no thanks, he didn't like the shape of grid iron ball!! PS His father put up rugby goal posts on the lawn at their family home in small town rural Canterbury, NZ when Dan was 8 years old (to save the windows of the house!). First five eighth is another name for fly half because they are the first receiver of the ball in the 5 player backline. The “eighth” refers to the 8 player forward pack that allow the backline to set the attack. On offence the halfback and the blindside wing are not generally part of the backline, hence “first five” (instead of first seven)

The Kiwis are solid right across the park and then you have the exceptional players that do stuff that no-one can predict or defend against. It need only happen once or twice in a game but that becomes the difference between winning and losing. Lets leave the consistently great forward packs aside. Unlike most other playing nations the Kiwis keep nurturing and finding great half backs and five-eights. Pivotal positions for teams going forward, maintaining possession and most importantly ''letting the ball sing'' ie letting the outside backs loose. None better than Dan Carter. What a tragedy for the Kiwis that today they're dilemma is who to pick in those positions? Too many to choose from. Luxury.

Firstly friend my comment about RM is very far from hate but unfortunately today people aren't interested in engaging in constructive conversation, it's seems easier to just label and put people into groups. Please note I acknowledge that he was a great player but my point was that he is far from being in the same category of Dan Carter because of his playing philosophy. As I said let's leave it at that and get into it when his highlight vid comes up, then we can have a good debate on whether he too is a G.O.A.T.

I agree! It's great to have constructive conversation. That's what makes sports so much fun. We can have different views and respect each other in the process. I love your insight always Chris! I welcome great thought provoking conversations always. That's how we learn! Much love always boss! I value your thoughts, insight, and support always ❤️ You've helped teach me so much already

100% checking out Johnny Wilkinson! I've heard he's exceptional!
@giteausuperstar8 ай бұрын
I’m English and love Jonny but I’m sorry, he wasn’t as good as Carter. Jonny was a better kicker (not by a lot mind, because Carter was exceptional ) and better defensively in the sense that he put in huge hits but Carter was a better all round player. Carter’s passing and running ability is probably the best of any 10. Total package.

@@giteausuperstari agree I am saying carter is better but Johnny Wilkinson was good defensively but Dan carter is better but Johnny Wilkinson is the 2 or 3 best
