The phrase you asked about, NONCE, is slang for a paedophile, and comes from an old prison term. Basically for their own safety, when in prison, paedophiles were kept separate from other inmates, so would get their exercise time differently. So guards knew who was who, they would write N.O.N.C.E on their cells note board, which stood for Not On Normal Courtyard Exercise... so they were then referred to what we now use as the current slang by the prisoners and staff.

The official name for it is TV Pickup. Typically increase demand by 200 to 400 megawatts. Often compensated for be using the pumped storage Hydro generators. Because of there fast start up time. The largest on record was in 1990 when a 2,800 Megawatt T.V. uplift occurred. At the end of the England West Germany football penalty shoot out. The opposite also occurs. That has to be prepared for. Such as the big switch off during remembrance.

btw for context in the postman one, if you’re not in when you get a delivery that can be put through the letter box in the door they give it to your neighbour and put a slip through your door to tell you which house has it. so him saying “i have a parcel for your neighbour” just means his neighbour isn’t in and he’s asking if he can hold it until they come back

Look up Dinorwig Power Station sometime - they basically hollowed out a mountain in Wales so that they could stick a hydroelectric power station in there, and when peak energy demand hits, they empty an entire lake up on the mountain into a lake down in the valley and convert the energy into water - they then pump the water back up overnight so it's ready for the next day.

Yeah it's called "The TV pick-up". Our power grid is AC with a frequency of 50Hz so all the spinning power station generators are producing electricity that is rising and falling in voltage at 50 times a second in synchronisation with each other. When you draw a massive amount of power from that AC supply it has a "breaking" effect on those spinning generators so the grid frequency starts to drop down; 49Hz then 48Hz and so on until your electrical devices connected to the power grid stop working. When you have a surplus of available AC power that's not being used the generators "speed up" and the grid frequency increases. The National Electricity Network Company, a.k.a. National Grid, monitors the frequency to keep it balanced at 50Hz. If there's a sudden demand for power, say for example everyone in the UK putting on the kettle during halftime at an England World Cup match which is a classic TV pick-up, then they need to quickly spin up more generators. This is where quick response power stations like Electric Mountain come into play; they release thousands and thousands of gallons of water from a reservoir at the top of a Mountain in Wales down into turbines within a few seconds to generate the power needed for the rise in demand. Then very late into the night like 2am to 4am when there is excess power available because everyone is asleep they pump the water back up to the top of the mountain to be used again.

Yeah, the kettle thing is real, the surge is usually during, in the middle of and at the end of popular soaps, such as Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Sometimes, especially winter, the drain on the National Grid is so great that they have to borrow/buy(not sure which) electricity off the Continental European power grids.

When it comes to brew times, all I know is brekky, morning brew around 10ish, dinner and maybe brew time mid afternoon to split the time between dinner and clocking off. I know some people have a brew after their tea, but I tend not to have one so to get a good nights kip and not be a bit buzzed through the evening. That's first to me that the telly companies and national grid work together when everyone decides to get up and put kettle on.

A colleague used to drive 60 miles to get to work, partly on the M25. One day, not unusually, there was an accident and the queue became more than 5 hours. After a while with nothing to do but drink coffee and water, he needed to go to the loo. He saw that up ahead men were pulling their cars over into the hard shoulder and peeing behind some bushes, as they do. So, he thought he’d do that. Having pulled over, he was relieving himself behind the bushes when there was a tremendous noise - shouting, screaming and banging. He looked up to find the traffic on the inside lane has moved up and there were 50 children waving at home from a tall coach all looking over the hedge he thought he was hidden behind.
