'Ellers' is pretty much a catch all phrase. You ask someone how they are. They answer with the obligatory 'just fine, thank you'. And instead of verbally waterboarding them with a million questions you just say 'Ellers da?', which can be roughly translated as 'what else is going on?'. It's pretty useful as it can be answered with just a 'nothing much', but it also opens the door for them to bring up just about any conversation topic. So if you've recently bough some fancy new gadget, broke up with your girlfriend, or your dog just learned how to speak fluent Portuguese, and you're simply dying to talk to someone about it then the 'ellers' is usually your green light to bring it up.

11:30 No no, you got it wrong, the English Monks ran out of their little monastery when it started burning and decided to take a nap in the grass. Meanwhile, the Vikings just happened to be in the area when they noticed what was going on, and decided that if the monks weren't going to do anything to save any valuables, then the Vikings were going to go take whatever they could before the fire got it all.

Norwegian Pepsi Max is super good. These things are produced locally in each country, and I guess the Norwegian water used to make it just works perfectly with it. Swedish one is close, but not equally great. French one is mediocre at best. But Spanish one is horrible.

It's most likely more to do with the Norwegian version of the FDA being much more strict about what ingredients and how much of each ingredient is allowed to be put into products that has to do with the taste difference. Norway is so strict about that stuff that the American FDA has literally complained about it and tried to make Norwegian FDA to be this evil thing that just wants people to think the American FDA is purposely poisoning the American people and make the American FDA look bad because of that. You see, one of the things that the Norwegian FDA has banned is various food coloring ingredients that the American FDA has approved for American consumption, but the Norwegian FDA has deemed it toxic for the human body, that is why the Big Red chewing gum - the short period it was sold in Norway, - was white when in the USA it is practically blood red, and why the Norwegian Fanta is more yellow than it is orange, while in the USA it is a deep orange to almost red color.

@@zoearcee5909 i was referring to the fact that the Fanta Orange is a darker orange, almost red in the USA, while in Norway the Fanta Orange is a much brighter orange, almost yellow color. We also have Fanta Exotic, which I suspect is the one you referred to with the Deep red. I have visited USA around 5 times in my life since my birth in CA USA, and one thing that stuck in my memory is that difference in the American Fanta Orange and the Norwegian Fanta Orange.

There's a commercial with Will Ferrell griping about Norway. He gets there and "wow, this place is adorable." There's a Norwegian commercial where someone at a university is poking fun at it. Find them and have a good laugh. Europeans consume more coffee than Americans. Scandinavians tend to drink more than the typical European. When I lived in Norway, I was told that there were over 300 distinct dialects of the language. When I lived in Drammen, one of the larger cities, I discovered people spoke a different dialect when I walked across a bridge to the other side of the river. When I lived in Skien, I walked over the nearby ridge, into the next valley, and found they spoke a different dialect. "Du" just translates as "you." Norway's top speed limit is 90 km / hr (about 56 mph). And yes, they have a LOT of electric vehicles. Gasoline routinely goes over $10 / gallon (converting units and currency) whereas electricity is similar in price to the USA. You'd go electric, too, if it was that much cheaper. Up north, Norway does have a border with Russia. It's not a very big one. When I was in Norway, during the Cold War, you could go up there and have a friend take a picture of you with the border guards in the background. The Soviet border guards, seeing this, would stand at attention with their AK-47s, trying to look intimidating. During the 1994 Winter Olympics, Gen Schwartzkopf went to Kirkenes, on the Norwegian / Soviet border, and got to talk (politely, of course), on camera, with the Soviet border guards. The one about the hijab ... that was just an English translation of the lower part. Yeah, I'm sure he was really unhappy. Everyone else in the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) is like "suck it up, dude."

@@Jmvars stabbur was specifically meant for storing food items. It is called stabbur because it usually rested on old tree trunks called stabber (same as in hoggestabbe). They were often built with permanent stairs, but to keep out pests the top of the stairs was not physically connected to the building. If the gap was too big for you to jump, or step over, you simply didn't get access. For more general storage you could use uthus, skur, le, stall, låve, bu, or bod (and probably multiple other building types).

10:17 That's the 3 headed troll, very unstable, each head represents a different emotional state, making them often fight against each other and unable to properly follow through with actions to completion. One head is very violent, wanting to smash whatever it sees whenever it sees it, the other is ambivalent, it doesn't really care what the other two does, it just wants to be left alone and stay out of things, while the third is much kinder than the first and will often fight with the third head in an attempt to keep it from recklessly killing or maiming people, stuff, and things. You could view it as the representation of how it would look like if your Angel on the shoulder and Devil on the shoulder were literally a part of you, and you have been hearing their constant bickering and fighting for years and years that you just don't care anymore. As for any unlucky traveler that may stumble upon this troll, they are either lucky or unlucky, lucky because they may get out of there alive or with something of value given by the good troll head, unlucky because if the evil troll head wins, then the traveler gets smashed, beaten, or otherwise ultimately ends up losing their life. The best thing a traveler can do whenever they see this troll is to turn tail and run for their life, hoping they were far enough away when they spotted the troll, or that the troll noticed them too late to do anything about it.

6:17 I thought Finnland was the most coffee drinking people? The lists I find on internet say America consumes the most coffee in the world, but that is per country and its like around 27M bags per year for the hole country. And Norway is far down that list with just 906K bags. But if you go by person its Finland with 12Kg per year and Norway with 9.9Kg per year. I am glad I am not in that statistics since I dont drink coffee (yes, there are some that don't drink coffee...). Norway and Finland is living in the cold part of the world, is that the reason why?

08:43 "Oi!" is - if you are more polite, at least - usually preceded by a "sorry" or in proper Norwegian, as not everyone says the word "Sorry," "Beklager." "Nei, men!" is usually preceded by "isn't it *insert name*? How goes it?" or in Norwegian "er det ikke *insert name*? Hvordan går det?" "Elers?" should be "Ellers?" and is usually used along with "da" to form "Ellers da?" It is translated into "Otherwise?" and with the "da" into "Otherwise then?" You would usually use that question after someone you haven't seen in a while says something along the lines of "Åja, hei! Ja, nei... Har ikke følt meg så bra i det siste, har vært syk i rundt en uke nå, så." which translates into "Oh, hey! Yeah, no.... I haven't felt very good lately, been sick for around a week now, so." And that's when you'd ask "Ellers da?" and the other person would instantly understand they are asking them to tell you what kind of stuff they have been up to lately - or since you last talked, - and will start talking about that stuff. It's very convenient, and drastically shortens down the effort needed to keep the conversation flowing, and is golden during moments when you don't really know what else to ask them to continue the conversation, as you maybe don't know them too well, or you aren't the best at asking questions, etc. "Du?" translates into "You?" and usually comes after "Hei" to form "Hei, du?" or in English "Hey, you?" This is usually used when the person you are talking to hasn't noticed you, or isn't looking at you, and they are in your way, or if you need help from them or need to talk to them, etc. Once the person you are talking to looks at you after you have said "Hei, du?" you could also continue with "Ja, du." or in English "Yes, you." to let them know that they are the ones you meant to get attention from.

Superhero comics are a mostly American phenomenon. European comics have always had a wide variety in topics, themes and styles. It's also always been accepted that people of all ages read them, and been pitched to 7-70 year olds alike, contrary to the USA where comics have been traditionally regarded as something childish and juvenile. There are a lot of them that are arguably funnier to read as adults than as children, though they're perfectly fit for children.

Finland is the country that drinks the most coffee ☕☕ in the world! The Scandinavian countries keep fighting of place 2-5 (together with Holland) and each year we keep changing places, just under Finland who usually keeps its no 1! ☕

09:22 This is definitely true, even down south in Stavanger, the sun will set around 3 pm (if not earlier) during the darkest days of the year, and won't rise until as late as around 11 am or even 12 pm.

Norway youngsters: We believe in critical thinking, science and logic. Religious beliefs tend to throw those out the window, so we tend to find fault with their explanations when having a "logical discussion" which is why the religion is taken with a grain of salt here... Our attitude is often more: sure there could be more out there, god or aliens, we will look forward to seeing proof of that, but until then we will work with what is in front of us for now.

Hi! Thank you for all Your funny reactions to Norway. I was hoping for a reaction to a song from Ylvis, called "the Cabin", that show some of Norwegian cabin-mentality 😊 They got several videos(What does the fox say, Massachusetts, My name is Finn, Stonehenge) They are quite funny, ironic and a little dirty sometimes. Well worth a look.

8:50 It's more like short for "Og hvordan går det ellers?" which would be "And how is it going otherwise?" in English. I would probably use "og" in front. Last one is correct though, it all depends on tone of voice.. "Du!" is different to "du?" Du means you. "Du der!" - "You there!"

Funny thing to add about accents in Norway: Usually, most people understand each other just fine wherever we go in Norway. BUT there are some places in like the mountains of central Norway where we almost can't understand a word because it is COMPLETELY different. They have kept their local dialect throughout the centuries.
