I'm a Black American who married a Greek Aussie woman and moved to Victoria, Australia. After being here for nearly a year, I can attest to pretty much everything this reaction covers. What I can add to that is that Melbourne is an amazingly cosmopolitan city with the most diverse population I've ever seen in a major city (and I've been to nearly every major city in the U.S.). The biggest question I get from my American countrymen is "Now that I've lived in Australia, would I move back to the U.S.?" ...no...I wouldn't. This place is so laid back and everyone that I've met has instantly become a cousin.

Back in '94 I was wandering around Old Town San Diego and explored the treasures of a thrift shop. The lady there wasn't taking too much notice until I opened my yap to ask about an item and her jaw just about hit the floor. I've never heard anyone so excited to hear my Aussie accent. She kept asking me to say stuff (for the lolz). I was her first Aussie customer and she couldn't get enough. I walked out with a pretty sweet deal on camera gear too.

Don't forget Australia is made up of many countries as well as mobs. The aboriginal law was strict if you disobeyed & to become a man ritual barbaric, although some tribes in Africa (as a whole) do similar today. Aboriginal people as a whole decided to use Australian law because we are softer, forgetting that being with family is a very strong part of being aboriginal.

As a resident of the outback, I always find it hilarious when people assume that it's here that all the stinging, venomous, and dangerous critters live. The only really dangerous stuff out here to worry about are a few species of snakes, redback spiders, drought, heat waves, and an occasional flood... and various critters like bees and wasps if you happen to be allergic to them which also exist on the coast. Coastal areas have most of the same dangerous snakes and spiders that we have, and they have plenty of their own venomous and stinging things that we don't have out here, and they have the ocean with all its dangers, and huge bushfires to worry about. If anything, the outback is probably the safest place to live.

In WA, we've got 104 islands just off the coast of Esperance, it's called The Recherche Archipelago. That's where Lake Hillier (Pink Lake) is on this video. Some of them you can't land a boat at, some has too many snakes, but heaps of them are the best fishing ever, and some of the most beautiful places to see seals, whales and sea eagles. On Woody Island you can go onto the glass bottom boat, see the sea horses and massive blue cods, which are protected.

@@roslynjonsson2383 me too. I have some pictures of roos on Lucky bay beach. Named by Matthew Flinders in January 1802. He took shelter from a summer storm there before continuing to map the Australian coast heading east. In April of that year he would encounter French explorer Nicholas Baudin in the aptly named encounter Bay near the present day town of Victor Harbor South Australia. That's a place I lived in for 6 years. Love it too. The thing about that meeting is that Britain and France were conducting a little skirmish called the Napoleonic wars at the time. It must have been a tense moment but they exchanged pleasantries and shared a meal. They both had letters of passage from the nobs back home. The coast around Esperance is without equal anywhere. It is just so very beautiful.

I know sometimes we Aussies would pronounce American place names incorrectly, but geez ... I haven't finished this video but I need to urgently correct a pronunciation: Canberra is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable - CAN (as in a can of soda) - CANbra (yes, being Australian, we like to abbreviate everything, even if that means dropping a few syllables). For your own information, The word aborigine actually has nothing to do with the aboriginal race. 'Aborigine' comes from the Latin words ab meaning from and origine meaning beginning or origin. It expresses that Aboriginal people have been there from the beginning of time. 'Aborigine' is a noun for an Aboriginal person (male or female). It can be used for other races who were known to be in their place of origin from the beginning. Not only the Australian Aborigines. But your point is taken.

Not only does it snow in Australia, Australia gets more snow than Switzerland in an average year. The spectacular and distinctive Australian Alps extend over 1.6 million hectares of public land contained in eleven national parks and nature reserves across Victoria, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory. AU has mountains but not very high ones... lots of snow boarding in winter if one is lucky enough to live on the east coast and can travel to the southern highlands.

There is snow in OZ. Not in Western Australia though. However in the highlands of Victoria and New South Wales, there's plenty in the winter and people go to ski etc. Tasmania often enjoys snow. In winter Mt Wellington above Hobart is often snow capped. However, it's not impossible for Hobart to get snow right down to the beach in the middle of summer!!! it requires a fairly unique set of weather events to converge and it will make national news, but it has happened. If there's a really large high pressure in the Australian Bight, there's a very powerful low probably a cyclone (Southern Hemisphere version of a hurricane) off the north west coast and the southern annular mode around Antarctica is just right. Then some extremely cold air can come all the way up to Tasmania from the south west and drop snow on it. At the same time, as a result of the same factors Perth WA (where I live) will be sweltering in 40 + degree C heat (40C = 104F). The cold air passes over Tassy, across Bass straight into the interior of the continent heating up in the summer sun finally arriving here dry and hot.

A couple of things. The Australian Alps receive more snow annually than the Swiss Alps. Second, it is sad that we are known most for our accents. Please check out this video about Australian inventions that changed the world. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmPVnKqCmbWLfM0

We have some pretty cool snow fields, however it's cheaper to fly to New Zealand and ski there as it's expensive at our fields - well that was 7 years ago so might've changed now! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ7ThXuImrOqf80

As an Aussie living in the US, that is so true. People seem to love my accent. Australia is only slightly smaller than the US, geographically speaking. 25 Mil people, with pretty much every country represented. There is plenty of snow throughout NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. It will snow in other places however it is not regular nor are there ski fields outside of those states. Things to consider, when talking about places, Melbourne - Mel-Bun (bin/bun/ban) Brisbane Briz-Ben, Canberra Can-Bruh. Animals wise, the Emu... it's an E-mewww not E-moooo.

Most African people living in Australia are white people of European heritage from places like South Africa and Zimbabwe. Its more varied now but people have been getting out of there since the 1970's and usually its to Australia or England. I think something greater than 2% of people in Western Australia are South African. They are the wealthiest ethnic group in the country, as most are hard working and highly educated.

We have deserts, rainforests, snow topped mountains and wide plains. We have bushland and countless different beaches and we have tiny country towns and booming cities. Despite the flaws this country has, we have a whole gambit of experiences. As long as you respect the wildlife, don't hitch hike and learn how to avoid a rip tide then you should have a great time down under.

Thank goodness you’ve finally shared a new post! I have no family that I’m close to and no close friends. Your videos help so much to deal with the loneliness. 2) A platypus is an odd looking animal with a body like a muskrat or beaver but a bill like a duck. I think that they are a mammal. I’ve been thinking about joining your patreon group so that we can communicate. Thanks for listening.

I'm glad you enjoy too Bob. I enjoy Jps much for similar reasons and he's a cool guy. True about the Platypus. A mammal which lays an egg. And spends a lot of time swimming but is not a fish. And spends some time on land. They are really elegant and fast swimmers. I spent several minutes at the aquarium just watching it swim around

We also have cool temperate rainforest. Check out Victoria Parks videos on the Tarra-Bulga National Park. We also have had quite a large population from North Africa, especially Ethiopia and Eritrea for decades. Recently most of our refugee intake has been from Sudan/South Sudan. They still make up a small fraction of the population, and are generally lovely people and settling in well (I used to live near the main migrant centre), despite what our media says. They ran the same xenophobic scare campaigns with the Vietnamese immigration of the 70’s and 80’s, and the earlier post WWII mainland European immigration.

Even though I'd previosly spent time in the States, the first time I visited Canada it took a while to tell the difference between Americans and Canadians, mostly becuase of the variety of accents. Eventually it came down to what people said when they learnt you were an Aussie; Canadians would say something like, 'Is that pub still at Bondi, I worked there for 12 months during a visit', and Amercans would almost always say something like, 'O yeah, Australia, I'm planning a trip there in the next 18 months'.

The previous government made it extremely hard for displaced peoples (boat people) to stay in Australia

A couple of points. We have a security treaty with the US (ANZUS)m so we're mates. Australia also has very good snow skiing. As for the outback, you're most likely to die of thirst than anything else. I moved here 37 years ago and live in the bush. I've seen exactly two snakes. We literally have wallabies, Echidnas and wombats, but snakes are extremely rare and not even on my radar. Ditto spiders. Like almost every western person, I am going to die from one of three causes. Heart attack, stroke or cancer. Very safe place to live - unless you drink and start being stupid by swimming or picking up snakes.

Australia has more snow coverage per annum than most European countries. Indigineous and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the recognised oldest cultures on Earth, the rainforests are the most ancient on Earth, Chinese iigration was enormous during our gold rush in the 1800's, Vietnamese after the war and European after WW2 to work on enormous infrastructure projects. Australia has a long binding agreement with the US called ANZUS, and a recent one called AUKUS.
