American football has been played in Germany since 1945 and was mainly played by occupying soldiers of the US Army until 1979. Since then, there has been a German association and an organized game. The umbrella organization “American Football Association Germany” (AFVD) runs the German Football League and German Football League 2 as well as all other football leagues at national level. With over 70,000 members, the AFVD is the sixth-largest team sports association in Germany (as of 2020). Seven German teams take part in the Europe-wide semi-professional European League of Football. The professional NFL has played one regular season game in Germany every year since 2022. My former neighbor is a founding member of the local football club, AFC Remscheid Amboss. The club also has a cheerleading section. The Cheerleading and Cheer Performance Association Germany e.V. (CCVD) was founded in 2007. By 2024, the association had grown to over 30,033 individual members. As of 2024, there are 16 state associations in all federal states, which look after the members at state level. Some of these state associations are now members of the respective state sports association. The CCVD has been a full member of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) since December 2018. It is the first organization recognized by the DOSB that is exclusively home to cheerleaders. Since 2008, the CCVD has hosted annual German cheerleading championships, which can be qualified for via state championships and regional championships.

There was also the World League/NFL Europe from 1995-2007 AFAIK these were playing with some US players during the off-season, some of these teams were refounded recently (in 2020/2021) for the new ELF (European League of Football). And some also have similar names to the GFL teams, Frankfurt's NFL Europe/ELF team is "Galaxy", the GFL team is "Universe" or Hamburg had the GFL team "Blue Devils" (were successful in late 90s/early 2000s, but got into trouble in the late 2000s, 2010s and kinda vanished in 2014), while NFL Europe/ELF are the "Sea Devils". In the GFL most players are German, but often a bunch of key players like the quarterback and head coach etc. are often American.

You asked: "how do you know the words (of that song)?" In general, we listen to a lot of music in English. Eg. if you turn on the radio in your car, you'll hear more English music (I'm referring to the language here, so also american music) than German music. I remember when you reacted to those "top German music videos from 2010 to 2020". I think you got that "German" in that title a little wrong. "German" was also referring to the language, so those were the hits of the German charts filtered for songs in German. If it were about the charts in general at that time, you would have heard a lot of English.

So what is it, why aren't there huge crowds of people playing it or having their children play it as in any other sports including one where you need to buy equipment and that can only be played on ice. "There was a demand of 3 million tickets for the Munich Game in 2022" You do are familiar with the EU, the Schengen Zone and generally other European countries outside of that? I've been a (German) Packers fan since the 90s but seeing Tom Brady play live was pure goosebumps. By the way, EVERYONE wore a jersey. The hype for American football in Germany is real. If you thought that was crazy, you need to react to the "ELF" (European League of Football). This League is currently in it's 4th season and currently it is a blast. Especially in the "Central Conference". Last Sunday the team of the "Suttgart Surge" has been crowned "Central Conference Champions 2024" (Spoiler: I am part of a fan-community of the Stuttgart Surge)

about 4 millions people wanted to buy tickets. I was glad, that I could work at the Frankfurt Game. The Europe Football League is quite popular and the most Teams in the league are from Germany. Also many Germans are watching the NFL. Last year i had been on 3 NFL Games in 2 Weeks in the US

I'm with a team in Germany myself. We got a few former D2/D3 college players in our team...from a players perspective they actually said, Germany is the go-to country outside of Northern America in terms of level and perspective. USA, Canada, Mexico...Germany. So broadcasting-wise it already came second in a recent study but it's growing rapidly as a sport as well!

They flew in the cheerleaders with the team. You should google Tom Bradys reaction to the crowd in Munich. He was amazed and said he cant remember having had such an amazing atmosphere

So… the song, Country Roads, is a camp fire classic, a lot of us Germans learn singing it in various Summer Camps (Zeltlager, Freizeiten). And you’ll find it in a lot of singing books at school like many other worldwide hits (Beatles or John Denver, you name it) . Next point is: English is taught at every school here, nowadays from first grade, in the 80s and 90s from the 5th grade on. Then, as others pointed out, mainstream radio music stations are playing like 60-70% English titles. And really, if you look into it, from Metallica to Taylor Swift (y?) all your sell out their shows in Germany massively. And not one but 3 of the greatest Rock festivals, alongside many others, are held in Germany, even Americans may have heard of Rock am Ring/ Rock im Park and Wacken Open Air. Then about the NFL, I have seen my first SB in full coverage (yes, at night) in 08, SB 42, fell in love with the game, and even more so with the New York Football Giants. I own a lot of gear and I am a subscriberof the NFL Game pass since the day it is sold in Germany ( that is also due to my NYG fandom, so I get to watch every game). For the whole season are several season games (and every postseason game) aired every Sunday on free TV in Germany but our stations tend to feature the recently more successful teams so we get to watch a lot of chiefs, 9ers,hawks,pats, doublebirds from Philly and the inevitable even tho not so succesful cowboys. Another downside is the German commentary, those guys tend to hype simple plays way too strong („incredible Mahomes run for 6 yds😅). And yes, NYG will play in Munich this fall unfortunately there were more than 2 Million fans trying to get one of those tickets. So it’s lucky shot.and I missed. Went to a London game once, in full Giants gear, even tho the Raiders played the Hawks. If you’re about the watch one of the Europe games on TV, take a look at the fans, you‘ll likely see the jerseys of many other teams in the crowd. So yeah, the NFL is a thing, still growing and still no competition to the millions attending „soccer“ every week.

there are millions of NFL fans in germany. I even flew to tampa 2 times within a year :D to watch the bucs play :D because i didnt get tickets to that munich game.... because more than 3 million people wanted to get tickets for that 70k capacity game.

The NFL has 19 million fans in Germany. Nearly 4 million Germans are fans who watch most NFL games. The game in Munich, which you saw in this video, had nearly 1 million ticket requests, but the stadium only had a capacity of 75,000 people. So yes, American football is quite popular in Germany.

American Football was played in all cities with American Soldiers around. The Berlin Eagles won the German Championship end of the 1980s 3 times that is when I started watching American Football. Last year the game between Dolphins and Chiefs was sold out in seconds. There were 1.5 mio people trying to get tickets for the normal season game played in Frankfurt 2023. I grew up with American Football and I still love it. The game in Munich was in the Sttadium of FC Bayern Munich aka Allianz Arena. The flew in the American Cheerleaders.

It is in the big soccer stadium "Allianz Arena" in Munich. And I suppose that everybody in Germany knows this song and can sing along. My whole family does indeed. 😅

Thank you for your reaction to the Munich game. American football enthusiasm in Germany is growing and growing... Even the games in the various German leagues are becoming more and more popular. In our village (about 5000 inhabitants) we have a squad of almost 50 men (including US import players and other EU imports) 🐓🏈 . Come along and experience American football in a whole new way.

Hi Ryan, the popularity of football is growing. We are also getting an NFL oficial season game this year here in Spain in the new Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium. We have Thursday night, Monday night plus three Sunday games each week on pay TV. We get local Spanish comments or original sound. Also, teams like the Chicago Bears have been hosting Game watch parties here to promote the game. Go Chiefs!! Regards from Madrid

I do watch NFL and Collage Football season. Starting again this Saturday at 18h local (that ist 6 pm for you yanks) with Falcons vs Ravens and 22h Lions vs Chiefs on Nitro. Did you know there are several German players in NFL? The cheerleaders might be flown in because the Buccs chartered a complete A350. Room enough. 😃

Based on interest, American Football currently ranks shared 7th in Germany if you count winter sports, motor sports and athletics as "one sport interest": 1. 76% Football (no, not soccer😇) 2. 29% Winter Sports 3. 26% Basketball (surely, slightly inflated due to last world championship) 4. 23% Handball 5. 22% Athletics 6. 21% Tennis 7. Motor Sports 7. 20% American Football 9. 19% Boxing 9. 19% Ice Hockey (source: Statista, people interested in sports, multiple selections possible, April 23 to March 24) As you can see, it is all about football with a lot of different other sports very close in popularity. Personally, I like handegg, but only watch playoffs and superbowl :)
