Thomas Gottschalk is problably the biggest German celebrity. he was very big in the 80's and 90's with TV shows like "Thommys Pop Show" and "Na Sowas!". When he took over "Wetten Dass...?" the show was already very big but he added on that. Famous for overrun the time for the show. "Die nachfolgende Sendung verspätet sich um 35 Minuten" and similar were part of every saturday when "Wetten dass...?" was on TV. He was THE face of Haribo in their advertisments for almost 25 years (23). And he brought the American celebrities on German TV. Gottschalk lived in Malibu from the 90's until the fire burned down his house in 2018. It was very common that international stars who were in Germany on tour or promoting their movies went to "Wetten dass...?" Joe Cocker and Robin Williams were 9 times at the show, Phil Collins and Rod Stewart 8 times, Elton John and Cliff Richard 7 times, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Celine Dion 6 times, Anastacia, Bee Gees, Bryan Adams, Cher, Madonna, Lionel Richie 5 times and many more.

There are two that you missed that I consider the best of Germany Celebrities. 1. Otto Waalkes (Comedian, Actor and a bunch of stuff) he is basically a mix between Rowan Atkinsons Mr. Bean and Jim Carrey but a lot of his stuff are based on the german language so unless one is fluent or native it is hard to keep up with him. 2. Micheal "Bully" Herbig (Comedian, Actor, etc.) probably most famous for his films "(T)raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1" and "Der Schuh des Manitu"

Otto Walkes was one of the most important factors, that Ice Age was more famous in Germany, than in other country. The producers then made the way of "synchronizing Sid" like Otto did as a standard for the rest of Sid's voices.

"Die Maus" (= the mouse) from "Die Sendung mit der Maus" (= the show with the mouse) is actually the most popular of them all. The show has been on air since 1971 and has 2300+ episodes produced and is still going strong. For the 25th jubilee in 1996 the song "Hier kommt die Maus" (= here comes the mouse) was produced by Stefan Raab who is also a big celebrity but has been out of the public eye for a few years now. That is so long ago that meanwhile Mark Forster has composed another jubilee song in 2021 for the 50th anniversary. I bet "Die Maus" will still be around when Mark Forster has long been forgotten. I hope I'll live to see somebody do the 75th anniversary song in 2046. Well, I have a good chance. "Die Maus" is only one year older than me.

Donny, now that you are parents the two of you should watch "die Sendung mit der Maus" und Löwenzahn". These are the German educational kids programs, kids actually like and their parents are nostalgic about. It's our version of "Mr. Rogers Neibourhood". And explains everything a kid can wonder about. "How do you get stripes into your toothpaste?" "How do wind instruments work?" Recently "what is transgender?" Explained for kids. I am always happy when I have TV access with little kids around, because then I can watch it, without having to find an excuse. Plus "die Maus" always starts with the episodes index in German and then repeats it in another language. By now they covered probably everything from amish til zuaheli. And is for some German kids the first contact with other languages.

In his early years Herbert Groenemeyer tried to be both actor and musician - with "Das Boot" being his most famous appearance in a movie. After he succeeded as a musician - every album since "4630 Bochum" in 1984 reached Nr. 1 in the German Album Charts - he only appeared in 3 more movies. He did 11 movies in total, but "Das Boot" is the only one that is familiar to me, while I can name at least 25 of his songs...

Herbert Grönemeyer is known as a phenomenal songwriter. My Gymnasium teacher picked _Bochum_ (also name of his hometown) as the first song for us to analyze while studying lyrics and poetry literature back in the day. Though his best, and even more known, in my opinion, are _Der Weg_ or _Mensch._ Helene Fischer is probably the biggest female Star you've never heard of in the US (she was forbes 8th highest paid woman in music in 2018 ranking behind Rhianna and before Celine Dion and Brittany Spears). Addition: _Die Ärzte_ colloquially also known as "Die beste Band Der Welt" is a huge arena filling, headling with / before Rockstar Hall of Famers big deal. They are a witty fun-punk band and _Schrei nach Liebe_ is their most well known song and a popculture landmark. 1LIVE has been a good source in the past to find current pop-culture leads. Still I highly recommend looking into Kabarett, German (political) satire (which rules) and German poetry slam for anybody advancing in and enjoying learning the language.

About Kai Pflaume: One of the reasons that he seems to be everywhere might be because he is such a nice guy. He’s probably a bit too old for that now, but in the past he has often been called “the perfect son-in-law” or “a mother-in-law’s dream” or things like that. He’s good-looking, but not intimidatingly so, he’s self-assured, but not arrogant, he’s down to earth, always nice and friendly. A friend of mine worked with him for a while and has told me that he was humble and kind and always brought snacks for the crew. I would also like to recommend a strange little German talkshow, Inas Nacht, that’s kind of relevant here. In this show, the host, a no-nonsense woman called Ina Müller, invites one, two or three German personalities from public life to a tiny pub in Hamburg. They talk, drink and sometimes sing a song together. Very personal questions are asked. Because the setting is so intimate, and because often the alcohol is flowing freely, it seems to me that it’s difficult for the guests to keep up any public persona - the audience quickly starts to gauge their real personality. (One fun episode was the one with a very conservative-looking older German politician and a famous German punk rocker - also of a certain age. The politician might have been a bit too full of himself, but was captivatingly chatting about an interesting life, whereas the punk rocker bored me to death.) So, why am I going on about this? Because while watching the episode with Kai Pflaume, it was practically impossible not to fall for his charms.

Grönemeier is much more known for his music, he has a very typical way of singing which you can recognize straight away. After his role in Das Boot there was not much more acting, and he turned to music pretty soon. Most famous are the tracks "Bochum", "Männer" and "Flugzeuge im Bauch". And comparing him with Hasselhoff is close to a criminal offense. :) There are some more huge celebs in Germany, that people in the US probably never heard of, for example Udo Lindenberg. He is a german rock star for 50 years now, although he has become a bit calmer in recent years. His trademarks have always been a strong Hamburg accent and a black hat and sunglasses. Nearly all songs of him are in german, and the music styles are a mixed bag, so I dont think he was very famous in the US. Here is his first mega hit from 1973: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHuVgniEm75-g68

On a similar note, here are some of the most iconic voices in German pop culture, if you ever wanna make a video on those! 😄 Like, who are the German voices, every impressionist needs to have an impression of? • Klaus Kinski (actor, known for his rageful outbursts, especially against journalists) • Jogi Löw (former coach of national men's soccer team) • Stefan Raab (former late night host) • Farid Bang (rapper) • Manfred Lehmann (guy, who does the voice in the Praktiker radio ad) • Torsten Sträter (comedian) • Joko Winterscheid (tv host, especially his laugh is often parodied) • Angela Merkel (chancellor) • Willy Brandt (chancellor) • ...honestly almost every chancellor had an iconic voice, that was good for parody And these two voices used to be in every impressionists tool kit, but are sadly fading into obscurity: • Marcel Reich-Ranicki (TV book critic) • Rudi Carell (Dutch-German TV host) The most famous impressionists to do all these voices are probably Matze Knoop and Max Giermann. Both very talented.

Herbert Grönemeyer is known as a singer. His song "Mensch" was number 1 in Germany. But the most famous are 2 songs from the 1980s: "Currywurst" and "Bochum". "Currywurst" is a tribute to the currywurst and the "Pommesbude". However, the German comedian Diether Krebs wrote the lyrics. You should do a search for "SketchUp" on KZbin. But that could be a culture shock ;-) "Bochum" is a hymn to his hometown, which was considered ugly at the time. There is probably no Bochumer who can't sing along with the song. In NRW - or at least in the Ruhr region - both songs have become an important cultural asset.

Check out Michael "Bully" Herbig - that guy put a quite big stamp on German TV comedy for almost 20 years (TV Shows / Movies) - Back in the 90s, Germany had it's own take on Saturday night live (RTL Samstag Nacht), and shortly after that run it's course, Bully starred with his own sketch show "Die Bullyparade" which is pretty famous to this day (the latest movie came out in 2017). Also, if you want to deep dive into German childhoods for many people around your age, dive into the movies with Bud Spencer & Terence Hill - these were one of the most beloved comedic duos of the 70s and 80s. Their movies were originally produced in either Italian or Mishmash (aka every actor just spoke whatever language they spoke and the movie was dubbed over), but have gotten a lot of fame in Germany because the dubbing was excellent and hilariously funny for the time. (There's anecdote's when Bud Spencer said "yeah, we botched that take, but the German dubbers will save it!"). They started with (serious) Western movies, that gained popularity in Germany because they got a comedy recut/dub (much more popular than the serious versions), and after the producers / actors caught on, they started to focus their movies more in a comedy direction, while still telling serious stories and doing great movies. Their signature events are hilariously overextended fist fights though, which happen in almost all movies.

There probably is nobody known all over Germany as a radio host, because all our radio stations are traditionally regional. Though quite a lot of successful tv hosts started as radio hosts. About the mouse song: It is kind of a tradition to have a famous pop song honoring the mouse every few years and that will be played in radios a lot. I still remember one by Stefan Raab, that must have been about 20 years ago. Die Sendung mit der Maus is just such a great and easy show, it's funny and you learn a lot of stuff. And it goes waaay back, so as a bonus it is full of childhood memories. No wonder many grownups still love it.

When it comes to TV hosts, you definitely missed Barbara Schöneberger and Günther Jauch. Then we have comedians like Otto Waalkes (who had his popularity peak somewhere in the 90s I think), Anke Engelke and Carolin Kebekus (somewhat more recent). Kai Pflaume is in all of these shows because they all get produced by the same company for Das Erste. (Other TV hosts include Jörg Pilawa, Stefan Raab (retired), Elton, Frank Elstner (retired long ago), Markus Lanz [and many politics talk shows of the format first name last name] Stefan Raab actually composed a song for the 25th anniversary of the Maus (called "hier kommt die Maus") and was long time host of everything on Pro7 (tvtotal and many "sports" shows like WokWM, Schlag den Raab etc.), as well as the producer for Lena's winning title in 2010s Eurovision (he also had a famous or infamous performance there himself previously with "Waddehaddedudeda") In the category of singers, there is probably a lot more (Grönemeyer is definitely more a singer than an actor). When it comes to actors, probably everyone knows Til Schweiger, Matthias Schweighöfer and Michael Bully Herbig, but many dislike their films.

Sorry, but I nearly spat out my drink when you said that Herbert Grönemeyer gave you David Hasselhoff vibes. Hasselhoff is nowhere near the same league as Grönemeyer either as an actor or a singer. You will have to watch "Das Boot", and preferebly in the undubbed German full-length movie version or the multi-episode TV series, to see the difference in acting calibre. And you'll have to listen to Grönemeyer's songs, which are very socio-political, and get a feeling for their political contexts. Grönemeyer is mainly a socio-critical musician who has been one of the highest-selling album artists in Germany for 30-odd years. Having said that, today's German "celebrities" include a whole lot of people I have never heard of and who don't seem to actually do anything.

The film "Das Boot" is recommended. It takes place in WW2 in a German submarine. It realizes the German heroic myth of the submarine pilots. Many men locked in a narrow steel boat between victories and despair. In between, gripping scenes are shot in the close proximity of a 1:1 replica of the submarine. At the end of the shooting, the actors no longer knew whether it was fiction or reality, they were locked in the boat for weeks and there were always new scenes just like in real life. Filming accidentally resulted in real injuries to the cast as they attempted to jump through the hatches. Next to that the technical details, how is a dead submarine battery reactivated when that is the only way to surface again? I don't want to reveal the outcome, but who knows the outcome of WW2...

This just hammered home to me how out of touch I am with German pop culture at this time, despite living in Germany. I stopped watching German TV in the late 90s and switched to getting all my entertainment and escapism from the internet, the English speaking part of the internet, to be more precise, so I'm also not aware of what is going on with German KZbin channels and stuff like that. I guess you could say I emigrated to the USA, mentally 20 years ago and only my corporal mortal coil stayed behind in Germany, hehehe. I know Gottschalk, because he was a big celebrity since the 80s, but I know none of the other people you listed. Late night talk shows were pretty big in Germany in the 90s. The biggest and most famous host, kind of the German Letterman, was a guy named Harald Schmidt. He and a younger guy named Stefan Raab were the biggest celebrities in Germany around the time when I checked out. That apparently nobody suggested them to you once more shows how much things have changed since I last was paying attention. Raab started out as a edgy, irreverent talk show host on VIVA, a German music channel and local competitor to MTV, then moved on to becoming one of the biggest music producers in the German speaking world himself and got several large shows on Pro7, which back then was the biggest and most successful cable network channel at the time. He also played a big role with the European Song Contest back then. He produced, promoted and in some cases performed most of the acts Germany sent to the contest during the 90s. Pop culture in the 90s in Germany was super ironic and kind of proto-hipsterish, if you will. Everything was deliberately cheesy and corny and young people suddenly ironically loved Schlager music and comedic satire and parody bands dominated the charts. That was also very apparent in the acts they sent to the European Song Contest. Google acts like "Guildo Horn" if you want to have a taste of what I am talking about. He was kind of the ridiculous, living embodiment of that ironic Schlager scene and boom.

A bit presumptuous of me to talk as if I kind of, sort of, were an American, despite never having set foot on New World soil, but I genuinely could have long conversations with you about US culture and politics, while I don't even know who the current German president is. I'm not joking. I forgot that I wanted to answer your question about Gottschalk being the German Howard Stern: Unfortunately not. There is nothing edgy or rebellious about Gottschalk. He is the most milquetoast, boring normie square you can imagine. I genuinely don't understand how that guy could become such a icon for so many decades. Even when he still was a young guy in the 80s and acted in somewhat raunchy comedy movies, he was boring and a stuck up prude when hosting any of his shows. I recently watched a old episode of "Wetten Dass" from the 80s on KZbin, where Gottschalk had Dolph Lundgren on as a guest, promoting his at the time new "He Man and the Masters of the Universe" movie and Gottschalk, despite being in his mid 20s at the time, was moralizing like a crotchety old man, about how action toys like "He Man" were dangerous and could normalize violence for children and nonsense like that. I suppose Gottschalk's appeal must have been that he was save and appealed to old people while at the same time being young and looking goofy and entertaining with his curly, long hair and thus giving the shows a sort of youthful aura.

One of the most remarkable things about Gottschalk is that he spent most of the 80's and early 90's speaking out about the older generation complaining about the younger generation... But now that he himself is way over 70, he has spent the last couple of years complaining about "the youth of today"... What a hypocrite.

Not German, but Austrian, but you simply can't have a party without an Udo Jürgens hit medley. He wrote and performed iconic songs in German language but french chanson style from the 60s on. Think of German language Paul Anka, Tony Bennett or Charles Aznavour. He was one of the very early ESC winners and was also known for quickwitted and social critical lyrics. I recommend checking out "In diesem ehrenwerten Haus" (bigotry), "Aber bitte mit Sahne", "Griechischer Wein" and "Merci Cherie" for starters. But any of his songs are good, really, as well as improving one's language skills. 😊

Thomas Gottschalk had some little roles in unknown US productions like Ring of the Musketeers (in 1992 together with David Hasselhoff and Cheech Marin) or played in a German TV comedy ("Zärtliche Chaoten") together with Michael Winslow (became famous in 1984 in "Police Academy").

Grönemeyer is more singer than actor. As far as middle names are concerned - a lot of people have none at all, some have their godparent's first name as their middle name. A long list of middle names usually points to a noble ancestry, as they tended to give their kids a lot of middle names, but that doesn't have to be the case for Grönemeyer - there's no law to stop you from giving your child several middle names. Gottschalk has started in radio, but he's an entertainer and actor as well.

Boy, did you ever miss two of the biggest legends: Günther Jauch and Hape Kerkeling. Günther Jauch is still host of the German Who Wants to be a Millionär and used to host SternTV before he gave it to Steffen Hallaschka. Hape Kerkeling is one of our greatest comedy legends. He is in semi-retirement, but every once in a while he'll come back with a new television show or book. Herbert Grönemeyer is primarily a singer. Das Boot was his only big acting role, but even I, as an American moved to Germany at age 14, know and love most of his songs... Try listening to "Mensch" or "Demo".
