To inspire you.....Loganair do flights, Glasgow in the west of Scotland to Orkney, then from Orkney to Shetland from about $100 each leg, Shetland to Bergen (Norway) from about $180. Each takes just over an hour. You could take in some very interesting history and scenery on the way, worth several days exploring each place. There are ferries, too and direct options going from Aberdeen in the north east of Scotland and returns via Denmark then onward through Europe by train. Just saying (again!) Love your aspirations to travel.
